Style File: Sweet Holiday Decor

If you fancy yourself green and you're the proud owner of a sweet tooth, adding a few finishing touches on your holiday decorating should be a cinch this year - especially if you've got some candy left over from Halloween.

The good folks at Wrigley have put out some ideas for mini-decorations and fun projects for you and the kids that are perfect for when you're stuck inside on these frigid winter days.  All you need are some basic supplies (pencil, scissors, glue) and some totally edible decorating items (hint: buy twice as much as you'll need so that you can indulge your sweet tooth as you create!) and their wrappers (remember?  I said it was green.)

Here goes:

Supplies:
•5 Rain gum foil ( for the leaves)
•5 Flare gum foil (for the berries)
•Pencil
•Scissors
•Craft glue
•Styrofoam wreath
•4" piece of red ribbon

HOLIDAY HOLLY
Instructions:
1.Take three pieces of 5 green foil, remove gum and flatten.
2.Using a pencil, draw a leaf shape on the back of foil and carefully cut out with scissors.
3.Place leaves in a triangular pattern, so that the base of each leaf touches in the center. Glue at center point to secure.
4.To make the berries, flatten one or two pieces of red foil.
5.Cut out ¼" circle shapes out of red foil. Glue berries to center of leaves.
6.Use finished holly as package decoration or string together for garland.

MINI METALLIC WREATHS
Instructions:
1.Take twelve pieces of 5 green foil, remove gum and flatten.
2.Wrap green foil around wreath. Secure loose end of foil to wreath with glue.
3.Repeat step three until entire wreath is covered in green foil.
4.Complete the wreath by attaching a red ribbon bow on the top.
5.Use wreaths as ornaments or holiday decoration.Additional tip: Personalize the ornament by gluing a photo in the center.

And keep reading for some edible projects...

Style File: Warming up your outdoor space

If you've got a patio, yard or deck that has served you well all summer, there's no need to pack it in now - believe it or not, you've got another couple months of al fresco entertaining, dining and lounging ahead of you. Your space just needs to serve three basic functions to keep in working order through the fall - you'll need it to provide warmth, shelter from any drizzle and be cozy enough to relax and enjoy the changing leaves.

Don't miss the show this weekend, when we'll talk to a local designer about some products that will help extend the use of your outdoor space through fall - but for now, you'll have to settle for some items we think will come in very handy.

Style File: TAG!

Seasonal home decor shopping is one of the most addictive sports out there.  I should know; I have no storage space and yet, every year I come home with more Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas accessories than I can fit in my house.  There's just something about being inspired by a new season (even if it means that the frigid days of winter are getting closer...)

And now I know I'm in big trouble this coming season, because I found a gem among home decor stores.  It's the TAG Outlet, on Wrightwood in the city - and it's all the same stuff you'll find in Crate & Barrel, but for a fraction of the price.  Including, but not limited to, accessories, furniture, dishes, linens and utensils.  (And yes, it IS less expensive than the Crate & Barrel Outlet on Clybourn.)  Here are a few teaser shots to get you ready for some seasonal shopping (or just looking for a great place to shop on a budget)!  Have fun!

Inside Celeb Closets

During the month of October we'll be hitting up different rooms in the home with various local professional organizers to tackle some major fall organization!  The first will be a closet in Andersonville (watch for that one in the coming weeks), but for now it just got me thinking about what would happen if I had the opportunity to completely re-design my closet.  (Hint: walls would come down, chandeliers would go in and each and every last shoe would have its own designated home.)  Which of course, led me to this fabulous gallery on InStyle.com.  If you want full descriptions of every closet, I highly recommend that you head there to get a closer look.  But for now, here are my favorite celeb closets!

Style File: I Love a Sample Sale

We were at DreamHome in the Merchandise Mart this morning, talking with designer Tony Stavish about creating a stylish room that's also eco-friendly.  (Check that out in an upcoming episode of HomesPlus!)  While there, I learned about a little place called the Sample Sale Showroom on the 15th floor.  When I found out about it, I'm pretty sure all you could see of me was a blur as I hightailed it to the elevators.

No vacation budget? Enjoy a STAYcation at home.

Everyone's cutting back.  Back-to-school supplies trump a long weekend away, getting your taxes paid takes precedence over that yearly trip to Hilton Head and a romantic week in Aruba?  Who can afford it?

Any of this sound familiar?  It may be good common sense to save more and spend less in a down economy, but when you're living in perpetual fear of unemployment, isn't that the time you need a stress-free getaway most?  We say yes.  And luckily, a relaxing weekend away is only as far as your own backyard if you play your cards right.  These backyard-fix-ups will cost you less than a trip to Hawaii and last a lot longer.  (Just remember to turn off your phone as soon as you step out that backdoor.)

And check out the video after the gallery to get some tips from Mike Schmechtig, owner of Schmechtig Landscapes, on how to acheive a five-star feel in your backyard on a one-star budget.

Style File: Moroccan Pouf

Longing for the days when having a beanbag in the corner was not only comfortable but also cool? Wipe that sad look off your face because beanbags are back, but this time they're chic and sophisticated. Say hello to one of this year's top 10 home accessories: the Moroccan pouf.  This cool conversation starter has a variety of uses but friend of the show and designer Michelle Williams likes them because they are, well... cool. Put them next to a couch, beside a bed, or near the fireplace and instantly add a sophisticated and funky vibe to your room.

Style File: Sculptures

It's nice when you've got home accessories that look good and serve a function.  Especially when you don't have a very large home.  But your home should be a place that you love, so even in a small home you should always make room for something that's beautiful just for the sake of being beautiful!

Style File: Transformative Tile

You know how everyone says you can change the look of a room with a fresh coat of paint?  Well, just imagine what you can do with some tile.  We just spent the morning at a new townhouse in Lakeshore East, where the owner is transforming her home from an impersonal, neutral townhouse to a chic, attractive home that reflects her style.  The thing is that she has a long way to go before it's complete - and yet, it looks awesome.  Why?  Because she finished the tile!

Style File: Dress up your walls

Google the word "wallpaper" and you're going to see pages of websites that have exotic landscapes, cute animals and gorgeous golf courses that you can use as wallpaper...for the desktop of your computer.  That should tell you what wallpaper means to people in 2010.  Back in the old days (meaning the 70's and 80's) wallpaper went on your walls.  And despite what Google may tell you, that's where it belongs today, too.

Images of a Dream Home

If the look of your home has got you down, perhaps what you need is some inspiration to perk things up.  In this economy, it's a lucky few who have the cash on hand for a total remodel, so it's a good thing that inspiration is free - and you can find it at Dream Home at the Merchandise Mart.

Check out some of the rooms in this year's Dream Home.

Today's Groupon will keep your home looking fresh...

First of all, let me begin by saying that if you're not familiar with Groupon, now's the time to get aquainted.  Daily deals in your email, usually for half or more off of a service, meal or class - if you like, you buy; if not, you delete.  I'm a huge fan.

So, when I saw today's Groupon, I got a little excited.  Today's deal is for a floral design class at Epoch Floral on Hubbard.  (A $175 value, available for $80)  For anyone who likes to keep fresh flowers in their home but doesn't have the cash to keep a florist on retainer, today's $80 deal is a great investment.  Flowers freshen up any home; a pop of color on the kitchen counter, a small bouquet in the powder room - these are the touches that people notice, not to mention the little touches that can make us feel a little more warmly toward our own homes.  But flowers can be expensive, especially if you're replacing them every week....

Style File: Make a statement with lighting

Forget the lighting fixtures that came with your house, they may get the job done, but I'm guessing they don't reflect your style.  Updating your lighting with something special is actually pretty easy and doesn't have to cost more than you can afford.  In addition to second-hand stores and garage sales, you can find inexpensive chandeliers, wall sconces and lamps at pretty much all of the home stores.

There are no rules to choosing your lighting fixtures, there are just a few things you need to remember...

Style File: Outdoor Family Room

The weather is warm and that means we're all moving life outside.  Cooking, eating, partying and even napping moves outdoors when things heat up here in Chicago, so your outdoor space needs to accomodate all of that.  Most people are moving toward the trend of having an outdoor living room - meaning your back patio, deck or yard has some (or in many cases, all) of the comforts you'd find inside your home.  And whether your space is small or goes on for acres, there are plenty of ways to bring the inside out this summer.

Check out the gallery to see a few necessities to turn your outdoor space into just another room in your home!
