Dave Jeff PHLI CEO interview with Gowhere Hip Hop

Last week we were at the PHLI store in Hyde Park for the anti violence event there, and got a chance to speak with the owner Dave Jeff about everything PHLI! Dave Jeff being a successful fashion entrepreneur, the face behind Sneaker Pimps, and CEO of PHLI talks a bit about what it means for PHLI to be involved in spreading anti-violence awareness throughout Hyde Park, and all of Chicago by setting a good example. It's important for role models like Dave Jeff to give back to their community, so that we can all grow as a people towards better collective lifestyles. Much respect to PHLI for that!

Dave Jeff also gives all the young entrepreneurs who are trying to make it in the fashion game some very valuable advice for success. He says to stay true to your personal style, and build your brand because it's the brand that people will remember not the location. He  says it's important to first start selling your clothing out of your trunk/backpack instead of hitting the boutiques off the bat. The reason being is because people want to see YOU, as you are a direct representation of the brand. Build the brand, love the brand, because it's all about the brand! I also have to shout-out Dave Jeff for being so helpful and friendly when we first talked awhile back, because he gave a young brother like myself some valuable knowledge when I was just starting out Limited G. His story is truly inspiring and I wish nothing but success to the PHLI brand, and the Dave Jeff who is an incredible role model in the community!

The PHLI store is located at 1613 East 55th Street, comes fully stocked with high-end exclusive clothing/shoes, internet bar, barber shop, and lounge! It's well worth checking out as your one-stop-shop to get PHLI before going out on the weekend. Enjoy!

Lindsay Lohan in GQ Germany - August 2010

lindsaylohanGQ10.jpg

Lindsay Lohan in GQ Magazine

Lindsay Lohan looks absolutely stunning in this full pictorial for GQ Germany, which will be available on newstands August 2010. Photographed by the wonderfully talented Ellen von Unwerth, these photos truly capture a side of Lindsay we may not have seen before. Refreshingly soft and feminine, while simple and captivating, the styling truly sets the tone for such a lovely ambiance. The nature infused look makes these photo's naturally beautiful, paired with classic and sexy pieces, that immediately catch your eye... There isn't much about this pictorial that I don't adore! I wonder if Lindsay is turning over a new leaf, since she will be getting sentenced to jail today...

"Lohan was ordered to serve 90 days in jail for missing alcohol counseling sessions in violation of her probation. She was also sentenced to spend 90 days in a drug and alcohol rehab program after her jail term is completed." [CNN]

Either way, I am absolutely loving this look! You sure wouldn't be able to assume she was in drug and alcohol rehabilitation counseling from these shots ;) Check out the complete pictorial below, as well as the making of the photo shoot video.

Bathing Ape Summer 2010 Collection

Modeled by Kanye West

Bathing Ape took a colorful, neat, and crisp direction for their 2010 Summer Collection.  Originally released in the winter season of '09, Ape forecasted a palette of Earth tones, complete with a fresh and airy color concept of cotton tops paired with khaki and denim fitted jeans.

The clothing doesn't have to do much work to look fly on Kanye... He  looks effortlessly young with a natural poise of confidence, which compliments his style. How can you Not love Kanye? So what do you think, did Bathing Ape appropriately predict a fresh trend for summer 2010? Yea or nay?

Definitive Culture Launch Party at Crimson Lounge

Above, Naagy talks with Hakim Hamid, CEO/Founder of Definitive Culture, at the Crimson Lounge in the Hotel Sax for the Definitive Culture Launch Party. Hakim explains that it is more than just a launch party; it is a "Thank You," party for all of those who helped contribute to making DC a huge success and embracing DC as if it was their own company.

Hakim's original idea was to make DC a membership only night club of the Who's Who in any city. It has now turned into Definitive Culture: a living, breathing, social network online and offline that is always changing, keeping you curious as to what the next event or post is going to be. Read more about Definitive Culture.

When leaving the party, everyone was asked to take a "Swag Bag," which was filled with all types of goodies to keep you looking fly all summer in Chicago.

Hakim gives a shout out to the designer of his shoes D. Kang and also says to be on the lookout for the next Definitive Culture event, "a pink party on a boat."

Dope Couture Interview with Gowhere Hip Hop

DOPELOGO.jpg

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dope Couture's founder and owner, Matt Fields, for an exclusive interview. For those of you that haven't heard of Dope Couture, it is the freshest streetwear outlet, originating in Bloomington, Indiana and spreading rapidly across the nation and in the hip hop culture. I've had the chance to follow and watch them expand over the last few years while seeing a myriad of artists and celebrities sportin' Dope Couture. Just peep the slideshow below for Chicago's own Lupe Fiasco, Naledge, and even Jay-Z himself sportin' the brand. And of course check out our conversation with Matt Fields as he describes a little bit more about Dope Couture - the brand, the origins, and the future. Enjoy!

Check out Dope Couture online at: dopecouture.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------

GWHH: How'd you get started with Dope Couture? Have you always wanted your own clothing line?

DC: I have always been into clothing. A lot of people say that they are into clothing but I have been independently studying clothing, fashion, and trends ever since I can remember. I was always into the newest, the freshest. I was sportin Hilfiger cable knits in Elementary (thanks moms). I remember killin em with my Azure Blue Versace polo back in middle school. I've always been on some sort of fashion. It wasn't until college I discovered streetwear, which merged so many cultures into one. As I started following the movement and really getting into the culture, I felt as though I had a perspective on streetwear clothing that others would vibe with. I set out to design a line inspired by the high fashion lines I was drawn to with a streetwear perspective. Other people were doing this but we were going to do something different.

GWHH: I read that you initially planned on calling the brand 'Dynasty Goods Dope Couture', why did you end up changing the name?

DC: I shortened it to just Dope Couture first because it's a shorter name and second it was more natural, I felt, for people to abbreviate it as Dope. Plus Dynasty Goods sounds like Rocawear Jr.

GWHH: You began by selling Dope online, when did you realize it was time to open up the shop?

DC: When I wanted to be able to support myself. I saw an opportunity to seize a storefront and took the leap. It was a good decision to upgrade home base.

GWHH: What's the difference between Dope Couture and other brands & stores?

DC: I try to be a bit higher end than some of the other streetwear brands. All of our designs incorporate a luxury brand aesthetic. I also try and set us apart with hand drawn artwork and attention to small details. It's not necessarily just about the clothes though. We live it from Talent Tuesdays to Scholars Thursdays. Our last intern is now working at Burberry. Our current intern just got accepted to fashion school and is fluent in French.

GWHH: What are some of your inspirations when designing an upcoming collection? Is there an underlying message in your brand?

DC: Our inspiration comes from today's high-end fashion designers, pop culture, art and music. The underlying message has been and will be our sarcastic interpretation of how luxury, high style and street culture mesh and portray a bourgeoisie lifestyle.

GWHH: What's your favorite Dope tee to-date?

DC: That's a really hard question to answer. So many of our designs are so personal and really connect with me. Right now I'm really feeling the mosaic tile inspired tee for spring. It's a really intricate design that we spent a lot of time perfecting so that it's just right.

GWHH: How do you keep everything up and running at such a young age? Have there been any major challenges you've come across?

DC: I wouldn't be as efficient as I am without the support of my team (The Bougie Crew). They help me run the day-to-day activities so that I can focus on the progress of the brand and boutique. It's challenging when you're still in the "systems development" stage; where there are some systems in place that run themselves and others that still require focus. In general we always work it out and come out on top.

GWHH: Every time I drop into the shop, you're bringing in new labels and designers, with all the hype for limited editions, what makes a label stick out as something Dope needs to carry?

DC: If it's high end, fashion forward, creative, unique, and exclusive.

GWHH: What brands/labels can shoppers pick up in Dope?

DC: Right now you can get Dope, HUF, Kidrobot, 10.Deep, Play Cloths, The Hundreds, and Super Sunglasses just to name a few. In the next couple of weeks we will be adding Tom Ford Sunglasses, Comme Des Garcons PLAY and APC denim.

GWHH: Besides being the first and only street wear boutique in Bloomington, you've hosted several in-stores featuring Big Sean, Mike Posner, Wale, etc. and now hosting the after party for Jay-Z in Indy... How's it feel to be a part of all this?

DC: It's a lot of work and requires a lot of planning, but every event we've done thus far has been a success and a lot of fun. It's exciting too because the artists that we involve ourselves with are ones we admire and enjoy.

GWHH: What's your reaction when you see guys like Lupe, Jay-Z, Naledge, Posner, Mick Boogie, and etc. rocking Dope? Did you ever picture that in the beginning?

DC: It's exciting. There's always a bit of a "shot in the dark" element when you send product to celebrities such as these but what makes it exciting for us is that guys like these get sent a slew of product constantly and for them or their stylist to pick our stuff over others is a pretty big seal of approval. I'm confident with our line and our designs just keep getting better so I knew it was only a matter of time before we saw celebrities sporting our stuff.

GWHH: Where do you see Dope Couture in 5 years, growth wise?

DC: We will be opening at least one new boutique in the next two years; 5 years from now I hope to see at least 2 boutiques. We will also be moving into cut and sew at some point so you'll see more technical and higher quality garments. You may even see us creating a whole new division where we're producing higher end pieces that really focuses on the luxury behind the brand.

GWHH: Since Gowhere Hip Hop is a music blog; tell us about your connection with music? What's currently on the Dope playlist?

DC: Fly Union, Mick Boogie's Pharrell Mixtape, Mick Boogie + Stylecaster, Pretty Lights, New Sade, Chip Tha Ripper, Alpha.Live, J.Rocc for Supreme, and Kidz In The Hall's new album, Land Of Make Believe.

GWHH: Tell us real quickly where else we can find Dope besides online at dopecouture.com and in-store?

DC: Our stock list is constantly growing but a couple of places that have shown us sincere support are Motivation Boutique in Ann Arbor, MI., Got Sole in Indianapolis, IN., Kreative Sole in Huntsville, AL., and El Mercado in Los Angeles.

GWHH: Any closing thoughts, remarks? Anything random you need to air out? Where can our readers follow Dope?

DC: Something a lot of people seem to don't know is that we rarely produce more than 100 tees per color way per style. When [insert brand here] does something "limited" they are doing our normal production numbers. We are constantly getting emails to see when we are going to re-stock product. A lot of people already know what this deal is but you would be surprised at how many don't. Our product is always limited so don't sleep. Random: We also take notice of repeat customers that have been with us from the beginning and I want to say thank you.

Strapped Up Waistwear

strapped up waistwear and gowherehiphop.jpg

Purchase Strapped Up Waistwear HERE

We got a dope package in the mail the other day from Strapped Up Waistwear in the form of some quality leather belts with a twist. We got a chance to strap up our pants, but also get strapped with our very own super soakers as well! Really clever idea to separate themselves from other belt retailers, and did I mention how quality the actual belts are, complete with their own custom monogram?  Big thanks go out to the entire Strapped Up team for the package, which was a pleasant surprise. Take a look at some close-ups of their belt selections in the slideshow below, and make sure you purchase your very own Strapped Up belt at their online store.

Strapped up is a new company dedicated to the production of new and creative waistwear. The Strapped Up team got tired of the same black and brown belts and decided to create an alternative that is eye-catching and original. The name Strapped Up refers to the belt around your waist. Common slang today uses the term to refer to having a gun. We have included a squirt gun with your belt so that you can get Strapped Up. Yeah, its a little nerdy, but you know you're going to play with it when you get your belt in the mail.

Kanye West blogs about recent fashion criticism

kanye-message.JPG

Kanye West took to his blog to lash out at recent criticism (IN ALL CAPS OF COURSE) from PETA who recently included the star on their 'Worst-Dressed' Celebrity list. This blog from the PETA Files probably added fuel to the fire. 'Ye has some strong points about the hypocrisy he sees in the fashion world as his response then transitions into a more general mindset on life. This part I really appreciate as his post can be interpreted as an inspiration for creative people to think outside the box (the 'color by numbers approach to life'). He even ends the post with a rhyme that I hope he somehow integrates into song. Also noteworthy: "Let the ball players dance after they score!". Hah, I love that. For those still unaware of why Kanye's fashion is causing such a fuss, hit the slideshow below for a glimpse at some brand new pictures of Kanye West & Amber Rose at Fashion Week in Paris (also courtesy of Ye's blog). Enjoy!

Download new version of Mr. Hudson's 'Anyone But Him' featuring Kanye West

kanye-hudson.jpg

Mr. Hudson "Anyone But Him [Single Version]" f/ Kanye West
FULL, CDQ, NEW Version *Tibs Fav.™

The original version of "Anyone But Him" appeared on Mr. Hudson's debut album, Straight No Chaser. Now it looks as if the collabo with Kanye West will officially be pushed as the next single using the new version above, which boasts more of a rock feel to the song. I was always never into this song compared to the rest of the album and I think it was the beat that detracted my interest since I always felt Hudson's lyrics were solid on this record and Kanye's verse was entertaining. Now that the beat has this unique feel to it, I have a renewed desire to listen to it and look forward to seeing whatever visual they come up with if that's indeed the case. Perajok has more info including a couple tweets from DJ Semtex.

Down below lies a few more tracks and a trio of videos as an unreleased Lupe Fiasco preview leaks out this afternoon. Here's the explanation (via 2db):

A preview of Lupe's upcoming official mixtape w/ DJ Absolut, entitled Vintage Fiaso. Being that Absolut was the first DJ to show Lu some love in NYC, the mixtape will contain 12 unreleased songs from his days at Arista Records.
I smell shenanigans! Let's see if that gets shut down. (UPDATE: Thought so.) Nevertheless, the beat goes pretty hard though and Lupe illustrates a real nice flow. Also included below is a Game feature (shouts 2 X), a new and powerful video from Rhymefest, ditto from Wyclef Jean, and B.o.B. performing at the Sprite Step Off in Charlotte... haha! Last but not least, make sure to peep an interesting slideshow of Kanye West, Amber Rose, & Pharrell at Fashion Week in Paris (shouts 2 Rap-Up). I definitely think Pharrell's new facial hair should stay, haha. Enjoy!

Kanye West & Amber Rose in Paris

kanye-west-amber-rose-7.jpg

Purely a quick fashion post here as Kanye West & Amber Rose's recent stop in Paris was surely the eye-catcher. The photos caught my eye because of the couple's unmatched, daring fashion sense. Amber Rose's see-through skin-colored outfit is self-explanatory and make sure to hit the jump for Kanye's blinged-out shoes (and Tims). Also included is a couple pics of Mr. & Mrs. Carter-Knowles for kicks (no pun intended). Lastly, I think I may have reached a personal best for most hyphens used in a post. *raises arms in triumph* Enjoy!

Kanye West for A Bathing Ape - Spring 2010

kanye-west-bape-bathing-ape-spring-2010-lookbook-1-499x333.jpg

We lead off this post so I can tinker around with the brand NEW slideshow feature in spotlighting the latest dip into the fashion foray from Kanye West. He works with the iconic company BAPE to be featured in their Spring 2010 lookbook. There's some pretty dope styles and I think it's safe to expect that you'll be seeing even more of the youth littered in Laker-colored vests, fully illustrated jackets, or accessories defined by the all-caps BAPE. (Photo credit: Hypebeast)

DOWNLOAD new mp3s after the jump from the likes of DMX, Lil' Wayne, Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Ne-Yo, and Lady Gaga (and an UPDATED Reflection Eternal collab with Mos Def, J. Cole, and Jay Electronica). The most entertaining track comes from none of them, however, as Maino drops a Tiger Woods-inspired record. You'll see. Also, I heard it was rumor for awhile but now it's been confirmed everywhere... T.I. has been released early from prison and currently staying in a halfway house in Atlanta. Enjoy!

Sneaker Spotlight: Gourmet's Fall 2009 Line

whitel'uno.jpg

First off I wanted to give a shout out to all the GWHH followers and let you know I'm J. Wags.  I'm thrilled to be contributing to the GWHH movement and look forward to bringing in a different angle whether it's reviews of music, sneakers or news!   I wanted to start off my first post with a up-and-coming sneaker company, Gourmet.  Gourmet has made a name for themselves over the last few years with the release of shoes inspired from the Jordan Brand Collection.  These kicks received mixed feelings for their use of classic outsoles and canvas structure with the apparent influence from Jordans.  Gourmet's Spring 2009 collection gave sneakerheads an original but classy line stemmed from their influences in Italian and Italian-American culture.  Above are my personal favorite kicks from the Fall 2009 collection, the Uno's.  These and the rest of Gourmet's Fall 2009 line are all available now at their online shop and their retailers websites Check out the SALE section and grab some of their recent releases for up to 50% OFF!  Keep an eye out as we expect Gourmet to continue releasing fresh sneakers and apparel.

New Limited G tees available at limitedg.com

tiger_glo.jpg

I just put up some new Limited G tee alterations to my designs at the online store, and you can now get the Jesus combo pack that used to be only available at St. Alfred as well. Check those out if you're a fan. To transition I wanted to give a brief thought I had on art making, and what I look for when making anything.

When I make anything I try to make the viewer aware of their presence in relation to the piece. It has to ask the viewer a subjective question making them relate directly in a personal way. To self analyze Limited G, I think people respond to the tees I have out now, because they're bold and call attention to the wearer, a sort of added confidence if you will. The bold always draw attention to themselves, because they seem to have an answer. This idea can be further related to history in general or even the music industry. Everyone is the best in their own right, but being bold is what convinces others. Take a look at any one in the game right now from Lil Wayne to Lady Gaga to name a few. They portray confidence almost as if they know something that others don't, which is why people gravitate towards them. Everyone can develop talent and everyone can grow to unimaginable heights; it's the confidence in self potential that gets anyone anywhere. That's what I look to capture in anything I make; the confidence in unimaginable & untapped potential. On another note in a look to the future I wanted to address some reasons to the delay in designs, and what to expect in the coming month.

It's been a while since I came out with brand new designs some would agree. The reason is partly because I've been so busy with co-running gowhere, finishing up college, doing other free-lance design work, and not to mention a bunch of side things that come up with those responsibilities. However, on a good note I've been refining Limited G, getting more organized, and becoming more knowledgable in what I want and how to achieve it with the clothing line.

I even have multiple designs on deck ready to be printed, so brand new stuff is coming within the next couple weeks as it will take me some time to do photoshoots too. All I'm going to say is that the new tees are going to take a darker route, except for some collaborations that are in store with artists like Jeff Pak. Lastly, I do this for you all, and want to thank you for your continued support. Much love!
