Harmonious Dynasty LIVE @ Biggest Mouth

Columbia's Biggest Mouth competition took place this past Thursday at the Metro and showcased the school's finest talent.  I've been scouting all of these amazing acts at the Big Mouth open mic series which culminates at this grand event.  The venue was flooded with fans as each act battled for the $5K grand prize and bragging rights.  This year's lineup included Pearls and Bones, Roots Rockers, Overnight Fire, Lili K., Velvette, Harmonious Dynasty, Beasty Eyes, Hatie Parmeter, They Face Reaction, Aby and Tessa Gutierrez, Carbon Tigers, Jennifer Oakley, and Katz Company.  I was blown away by the stage presence that each of these performing acts displayed on that special night.  The Carbon Tigers took home the gold in impressive fashion winning both the people's choice as well as the judge's decision.

On behalf of Miller Street Studios, however, I would like to acknowledge Harmonious Dynasty who I felt was equally deserving of winning the competition.  The group consists of Isaiah Jones (lead singer), Moses Hall (keys), Chris Singleton (drums), Nate Mcghee (strings), and Erik Hunter (bass).  Utilizing a creative video to open up their set, HD came out of the gates strong as they performed their smash hit "Rodeo".  I'm a huge fan of live music, and I felt that this crew displayed that they belong amongst Columbia's elite talent.  The video up above showcases HD's full performance so check it out for yourself.  Lastly, I have to give a big shout out to The Student Programming Board for their efforts in producing this event.  Follow HD @HarmoniousD2 to get exclusive updates and info about their upcoming shows!

Mikkey Halsted's The Ultimate MC Battle LIVE @ Reggie's

Mikkey Halsted's The Ultimate MC Battle went down this past Thursday at Reggie's! Every contestant had their own style of flow that kept the crowd beggin' for more. During the competition each MC had to spit over 2-3 industry tracks and the crowd determined who would advance to the next round. Thank God Mikkey had that sound meter, or else there would have been a brawl. After the 16-24 MC's competed the final three that advanced to the semi-finals were: Mr. Wright, Sam I Am, and CoJack. Each finalist was given the same industry beat to spit over. The two best friends, Sam I Am and Mr. Wright, battled it out to WuTang's "C.R.E.A.M." Sam I Am ended up taking the win with a Wu-tang diss that was nasty! The final battle was between Sam I Am and CoJack. Both MC's had to spit over Kanye's "Can't Tell Me Nothing", but in the end the crowd chose CoJack with a score of 118 (out of 120).

CoJack won $100 cash, a battle reel of his footage (Courtesy of Chuck Diesel), 2 hours of studio time (Courtesy of Soundscape), 3 blog post entries (Courtesy of What's In My Head Phones, YNotMyDream and more) and 1 free demo track from one of the the previous Producer Battle Contestants. Big ups to Mikkey and the 4Management team for giving our local MC's a chance to get heard and have something to compete for. For more information about up and coming battles, follow Mikkey @mikkeyhalsted, MikkeyHalsted.com and on Facebook. Ang13, Chicago's legendary female MC, also made a surprise performance. Make sure to check out the recap above and photos after the jump.

Boom Goes The Globe 'Elevate Me' video trailer

A lot has happened since Boom Goes the Globe was last featured on GWHH.

This electronic-rock powerhouse has been gaining momentum in the Chicago and national club circuit, and has just released a video trailer for their upcoming single, "Elevate Me [The Astronauts Report It Feels Good]."  This track will mark the first release from their forthcoming EP, Space Junk [Release TBA]. This trailer embodies what we've come to expect from this mysterious group: an otherworldly, dance-fueled onslaught. BGTG certainly continues to raise eyebrows, including ours.

Yelawolf Interview with Gowhere Hip Hop

Last night, I was on hand at Reggie's Rock Club in Chicago to witness Yelawolf...well rock the joint. Literally, that was probably the livest show I've witnessed at Reggie's since maybe The Cool Kids last year. During one part of Yelawolf's set, a fan threw a Derrick Rose jersey on stage and Yelawolf changed into the all-star garb amidst chants of MVP! Extremely dope moment. More great moments? How about a surprise guest appearance from acclaimed drummer Travis Barker rocking out with his homie Yelawolf.

I spoke with Yelawolf briefly backstage before his set and also with Travis Barker, who was conversing and practicing his drum set off his foot. All at once, straight zoning out. After that, we small talked for a quick minute, then I asked him, "You really love those drums don't you?" We all can gather what his response was after that. I bounced thereafter to enjoy the show.

I usually like conversing with the artists beforehand to help build a good repoire. Also because, more often than not, that discourse cements the impending interview later- which in my case was indeed a groove!!

After the show, I sat down with a very candid Yelawolf as he talked about SXSW, the critics, his new upcoming album 'Radioactive', the Warped tour, and his thoughts on receiving advice from his boss Marshall Mathers. Don't forget to peep the dope concert footage with surprise guest Travis Barker in the video also (more footage on the way shortly). Lastly shouts to Gowhere, Zack at YM!, and I'm Flashy for the collab love on this Yela show! Chicago Lock in!

Wiz Khalifa 'Rolling Papers' Chicago Album Listening Session

Last night Wiz Khalifa came out to CRC Studios to blow kush with the Chi, and listen to his debut album Rolling Papers dropping next week, March 29th. Above Wiz says a few words before hitting play, and rolling up next to Chuck Inglish of The Cool Kids. Other Chicago artists in attendance were Willie Taylor, GLC, and Nikki Lynette. Tibs and I had a lot of fun choppin it up with everyone, and most importantly the album sounds dynamic. I think Wiz has a bright career ahead of him, and can expect the album to do well come March 29th. Cheers Taylor Gang!

Dipset Reunion Concert + Interview in Chicago

Dipset Dipset Dipset! In case you missed The Diplomats Chicago reunion concert we sponsored, Gowhere has got you covered with some raw footage I took of the set along with a few interviews by Jen DeLeon. It was dynamic to see all of them on stage performing the classics, and new joints as well -- I especially enjoyed the tomfoolery throughout both on stage and backstage. Classic Dipset, good to have em back.

Bilal 'Think It Over' LIVE @ The Shrine

Bilal performed live at The Shrine on March 5th, bringing his own personal band, Soulquarians, to add a perfect touch to this memorable performance.

The Shrine was packed with neo-soul and music lovers alike to see Bilal perform and he never failed to give a high-energy, crowd-moving performance. This was my first time seeing him live and I must say he puts on a fantastic show.

One of the songs that really stuck with me was "Think It Over" from his latest album Airtight's Revenge, and Cam Be caught every moment of it for you to see, along with a snippet from my interview with him after the show.

The Legendary: A Film About The Roots

During the latter part of 2010, Jeff Baraka and I had the opportunity to cover a number of concerts on the Hennessy Artistry Tour with The Legendary Roots Crew. I have always been a huge fan of the music created by the best band to ever grace the hip hop genre. In this film, I wanted to not only highlight the versatility of a group that has played with most everyone in the industry, but also capture candid moments of real human beings just trying to share the gifts they have been given to the best of their abilities.

In addition to the Hennessy Tour, we got an chance to sit down with drummer ?uestlove at the House of Blues in Chicago as The Roots gave the audience a glimpse of why they are considered by many the hardest working band in show biz. All and all, The Roots have proven time again that they are indeed Legendary.

Linkin Park LIVE in Chicago 01.26 [Review]

band.jpg

Linkin Park at the United Center, Chicago

For over 10 years now, I have been listening to one, and only one, rock band consistently: Linkin Park. For those who don't know, Maks G and I are longtime friends and he was the one that introduced me to LP at the very beginning. So naturally, when we got wave of the group's A Thousand Suns tour stopping at the United Center in Chicago, we had to go. Neither of us have seen Linkin Park live before and after rave reviews from critics (2010 Winner of 'Best Live Act' at the EMAs) and friends alike, we both agreed that this is something we should mark off the checklist, and what better time than now. As an added bonus, Maks' spot is walking distance to the UC, even on a brutally cold winter night last Wednesday. It was one swift and spontaneous decision that we weren't at all questioning once we settled in after that walk for what turned out to be an ultra-energetic performance and a memorable concert experience that exceeded the high praise we had seen only as mere words just hours before.

Quite frankly, I didn't know what to expect exactly. After all, the amount of rock concerts I had been to previously is equal to the amount of Super Bowl rings Packers star cornerback Charles Woodson currently has: none. (After tonight though, I think the correct number for both of those will be one. As much as the Bears fan in me is rooting against it, I think Woodson, Aaron Rodgers, & Co. will hoist the Lombardi Trophy tonight. I also think Christina Aguilera will hold the word 'brave' for over 6 seconds, a Steeler will do the Aaron Rodgers 'belt' celebration, the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach will be yellow, and the MVP will thank God first. Prop bets FTW!).

The lights first dimmed to the point where you couldn't make out the championship banners of the Bulls and Blackhawks above. The only source of light came from the flashes of the screaming fans waiting in anticipation for one more cue that the band was in fact coming out. That cue came in the form of a GWHH-consensus pick for the 'Album Intro All-Star Team': "The Requiem". This chilling intro track would clearly start on our Album Intro All-Star Team (see what I did there?) as it is a simple, yet epic mood setter that begins the Thousand Suns album. From our close, side view vantage point, we had a glimpse of LP frontman Chester Bennington jumping up and down and getting absolutely hyped before hitting the stage at the intro's culmination. I am always curious about pre-show and pre-game routines, so Chester's will be quite the lasting image anytime I press play on A Thousand Suns. Instead of vaulting into the first song of the album "Burning In The Skies", the group rightfully opted to perform a more high-octane energy record to kick things off: Meteora's "Faint". They followed that with "Lying From You" from the same album (my favorite of theirs, for the record) and the show was off to a seamless and perfect start.

Linkin Park

Linkin Park at the United Center, Chicago

What first hit us about their live show was Chester's clarity in his mix of both singing and screaming - not only for the first two songs, but throughout the entire concert. I am still scratching my head today about how Chester's voice can sustain such loud screams throughout just one show, let alone the whole tour. He delivered all of his lyrics at near-studio quality, as he had a live sound and touch that made it all feel authentic. The same can be said for Linkin Park's other main vocalist: Mike Shinoda, who cranked out some melodies in addition to the rap that we first think of him for. No lip-synching and no skipping words here, and that made the live experience that much more enjoyable.

With the show fully underway now, Linkin Park ripped through many of the classics you would expect plus the perfect amount of new jams from A Thousand Suns that fans of the group who have seen them before were seeing for the first time. In addition, the stage was set up with a V-shape, leading Mike and Chester to walk up and down both sides and show love to the entire UC crowd and not just the rabid fans who were even starting mosh pits in the floor seats. And oh yes, there were plenty of crowd surfers who made their way to the stage, receiving dap from Chester that made it all worth it. Props to Chester for recognizing every one.

Onto my favorite stretch of the concert. It began with my favorite LP song "In The End", which doubled as the best performance of the night due to the goosebump-inducing crowd participation. After all, "In The End" is on the short list for Linkin Park's most well-known song, and the last verse naturally appeals for the crowd to sing along. Mike and Chester egged us along by holding the mics to the crowd and it translated powerfully in the official live recording you can download below (and you can download the whole concert at linkinpark.com). That experience alone was well worth the price of admission, but this energy was then bolstered, believe it or not, by an intense performance of "Bleed It Out" that followed. Truthfully, I was never really high on this song, but to see the energy that Chester put into this one - nearly stage diving, but settling for singing a duet with a random fan - made me a fan of the song.

LIVE From Chicago 01.26.11 *TIBS FAV.™

This, however, means that my pre-show prediction of "In The End" being the concert's last song was wrong. I was left wondering what would be the Mariano Rivera of the Thousand Suns Tour: Chicago and it was none other than the band's first hit: "One Step Closer". Excellent choice. The crowd's energy matched the peak set by the two songs in the previous paragraph for a memorable farewell to the one-and-a-half hour set. We were also treated to excellent performances of slower songs like "Iridescent" and "Shadow Of The Day" in addition to favorites like "Numb", "What I've Done", and "New Divide" amongst others. But to my disappointment: no performance at all of "Somewhere I Belong" - one of my (and many others) favorite singles of the group. I would expect that one performed on other stops of the tour for what I assume is a sometimes-changing setlist. Flat out though, Linkin Park put on one helluva show and not only lived up to the hype, but exceeded it. Could my first rock concert have gone any better?

Be sure to check out Linkin Park on their remaining stops on the A Thousand Suns Tour, more photos from the Chicago stop below, and LP similarly rockin' the stage on SNL just last night below as well. Enjoy!

Big Daddy Kane Interview with Gowhere Hip Hop

Friday was an adrenaline rush...WHY!?! One of the greatest of the golden age of rap blessed GWHH, Cam Be, and Tina P with his time. Bear witness as Big Daddy Kane gives us his thoughts on what it's like to be a living legend, the state of hip hop, and his upcoming live album, The Last Supper. His answers were surprising; what else to expect from BDK!?!

On the state of hip hop:
"When you got to break hip hop off in different categories, then yeah, there's a possibility that it may be dead. But you know, rap music is still alive and the youth - they still embrace it and it's become a lucrative business. From that aspect, I think it's a beautiful thing."

Boom Goes The Globe LIVE @ Double Door

Boom Goes The Globe is an electronic dance-rock experience.

Music born from the outer rim of DJ tradition, BGTG shakes the boundaries of the prototypical, arranging new spheres in dance-wave space. Ryan Loftsgaarden [DJ/Synths/ Aux.] and Dan Hill [Drums/Electronics] of Chicago's bass-rock outfit, Army of Monsters, form the shape of the group--unleashing an unmerciful assault of groove that can keep even the most mild feet moving. From the abstract to the modernistic, the DJ/Live Percussion group draws influences from the likes of Deadmau5, Fedde le Grand, Tiesto and Dr. Luke to create a hammering blend of rock and dance, electrifying on the surface and undeniable at the core.

BGTG's first mixtape, appropriately titled Boom is a Lifestyle, introduces the first of a series of four that will be released in the coming winter months. Boom is a Lifestyle provides the framework of BGTG's sound, which smartly layers modern hooks with electronic cataclysm, retaining pounding movement, and refreshing subtlety from beginning to end. However, the group's essence lies within their live performances, creating an experience unique to that of the traditional DJ circuit.

There are no boundaries, only the universal model of dance.

Amel Larrieux Sets The Shrine On FIRE!!

Hey World! I'm Andrea Oppan the newest edition to the Gowhere Hip Hop team. I got a chance to talk to Amel Larrieux after her explosive performance Friday (Jan 7th) at The ShrineWe talked about her life as an independent artist, her love for Chicago, and performing at the Shrine. She also let me in on a little secret... she is working on a new Groove Theory album with her old band mate Bryce Wilson!

For those of you that don't know, Groove Theory was an R&B/hip hop group from the late 90's that spun off chart topping jams like "Tell Me" and "It's Alright"Amel parted ways with the group back in 1999 to start her own solo project which has proved to be a great success spawning radio hits like "For Real" (Which is also one of my personal favorites). It's exciting to hear that they will join forces again for another album after 12 years!!

This interview was one of my favorites because Amel Larrieux is so real and down to earth. Cam Be put a creative spin on this one infusing her performance with the interview check it out!! Amel is working on her fourth album Ice Cream Every Daywhich will be released sometime this Spring.

Black Milk - The Man, The Music, The City

Black Milk's Album Of The Year was a bold statement, bold literally and musically. His sonic sound and genuine lyrics have resonated with me since I first heard his latest project. Mishon is a very talented singer, dancer, actor, and even plays the guitar and keyboard. You might know him from the ABC Family drama, "Lincoln Heights." You can Follow Mishon on Twitter @Mishon, Facebook, or at www.mishon.net.

Red Bull Big Tune National Finals @ The Metro

What's up everyone! I just linked up with GWHH to start covering events, making videos, and writing features so be sure to check me out! I recently graduated from Columbia College Chicago in the summer of 2010 with a B.A. in Film & Video. Since acquiring this degree I've begun doing work as a freelance and contract photographer, videographer, and editor. One day I  hope to run my own production company in Chicago to further build with like minded people. Make sure to link up with me on my website! The videos above and below are some recent work I did at the Chicago Red Bull Big Tune 2010 Championship Finals.

18 up and coming producers from around the country came to Chicago's Metro with the goal of becoming the 2010 Red Bull Big Tune National Champion. Fresh beats, A-list producers (DJ Premier, Just Blaze), and enough Red Bull for a heart attack gave Chicago hip-hoppers a night to remember. I won't go into who my personal favorite was (Hitmakers), but the man of the hour was 14KT - beating Nospeakerz in the final. Exile and Araab Muzik also made an appearance doing a live MPC demo. Exile may have been my favorite performer of the night (sorry 14KT). DJ Premier and Just Blaze closed out the night spinning until 3 in the morning. Good thing there was Red Bull. If you ever get a chance next year to catch the Big Tune competition, catch it. I know I'll be there.

Les Nubians LIVE in New York

Last month I had the opportunity to travel to New York with Jeff Baraka to capture video of some great artist live in concert. The Les Nubians were no exception. With the release of a new EP Nu Revolution, the Grammy nominated sisters Hélène & Célia Faussart of Paris, France delivered an amazing show at Le Poisson Rouge in New York.

In this clip, among other songs, the the duo collaborates with Ghana born MC Blitz the Ambassador, who is making alot of noise in his own right. Overall it was a wonderful evening I'm just glad I get to share a glimpse of it. Les Nubians plan to release the full-lenght Nu Revolution LP in early 2011.

El DeBarge @ The Shrine [Recap]

_MG_0483.jpg

El DeBarge was the big draw this weekend in Chicago as he packed The Shrine this past Friday night. I couldn't have said it better than how The Shrine did below, which contains some fun anecdotes from the evening.

One of the original heartthrobs in R&B music is back in a major way. R&B singer/songwriter El DeBarge performed an intimate set of his greatest hits at The Shrine Chicago nightclub in Chicago's south loop entertainment district on Friday night. In front of a sold out crowd of fans, DeBarge romanticized the women with extended renditions of his classics "All This Love" and "I Like It" which were met with a sing-along from the audience. Songs from DeBarge's upcoming album Second Chance were performed. The new album hits stores on November 30. Originally scheduled to perform a 25-minutes, El told the crowd, "I have to give you a few more songs," and finished his set with a festive instrumentation and audience participation of "Rhythm of the Night."

Backstage, El was caught singing Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and was met with an applause by the surrounding guests. After hearing opening act Angela Martin singing "Nasty" by Janet Jackson, he said, "I have never heard someone cover a Janet tune live. I have to meet her. She sounded good." Neo-soul songstress Cherisse Scott also opening for the show. DeBarge's was backed by the house bands Verzatile and Zzaje.

El's brother Chico DeBarge is scheduled to perform a New Year's Eve show at The Shrine on December 31. Go to theshrinechicago.com to buy tickets and receive announcements via e-mail.

Be sure to check out the gallery below for all of the awesome photos from the evening's events, taken by Rich P. Second Chance is due out November 30th. Enjoy!

Sneaker Pimps Chicago 2010 Recap

Sneaker Pimps Chicago Q&A Recap

Sneaker Pimps 2010 has been making memorable trips around the states, and their stop in Chicago was no different. The event was a dope combination of Hip Hop performances, giveaways, and some of the most creative sneakers Chicago has ever seen. Supporting the Sneaker Pimps movement was a wide array of respected Chicagoans who came together to not only show some Chi Town unity, but to also enjoy the culture that they grew up on. GY312, Jen DeLeon, and I were on hand to ask them a question or two about their personal experiences on Hip Hop and sneaker culture in honor of the event. In the video above you can really see Chicago come together as we talk to Mic Terror, Skooda Chose, Mikkey Halsted, Rockie Fresh, Reno Chinati, Vic of Leaders 1354, FNF's JROC, Vocalo's Jesse Menendez, DJ Sean Mac, Hustle Simmons, and the host of the night Dave Jeff of PHLI! Each Chicagoan has something great to add about the culture, so be sure to check that out above.

Down below I've got a few live performances from the legendary Raekwon who headlined this year's 2010 Chicago Sneaker Pimps, bringing the crowd some classics to match the classics on display! Find out what Raekwon had to say about the Sneaker Pimps movement during his GWHH interview with GY312 in case you missed it from before. Also last but not least check out Chicago's GLC perform some hits from his catalogue including "Pour Another Drink" featuring John Legend off his recently released album 'Love, Life, & Loyalty' below. #Chicago stand up!

Those powerful words from Big Sean kick off the 'Living Our Dreams (Memories)' documentary-style profile - a Gowhere Hip Hop x The Goodie Bag collaboration produced by our main man, Cam Be. The video builds upon following your dreams as Sean also discussed growing up in the midwest, having Kanye West as his mentor, and giving back to his fans. In fact, Big Sean was shaking hands and taking photos for nearly two hours after his headlining set at Reggie's here in Chicago, making sure to not forget any fan who stayed out into the wee hours of a Tuesday night.

"Memories", one of the standout tracks from Big Sean's Finally Famous Vol. 3: BIG, is the perfect backdrop for the very reflective Big Sean that you see in the interview. You are also treated to some vivid, multi-angle looks at the show itself, just in case you don't believe that Reggie's was rockin' that night (see: Mickey Factz and Co. on stage at the end). You undoubtedly have "Memories" stuck in your head after the video, so combat that by downloading the song individually below, and, while you're at it: the entire FFv3 mixtape.

Remember to check out our good friends at The Goodie Bag Blog (nice ring to it, eh?), as the interview was conducted by GB's Tim Perkins and GWHH's own GY312. Once again, big shouts to Cam Be - the mastermind behind the powerful culture changing work of art you gotta watch above. Enjoy!

Mickey Factz LIVE @ Reggie's Rock Club: Chicago

PREVIOUSLY:
Mickey Factz 'I'm Better Than You' [MIXTAPE]
Presented by: XXL (MORE INFO HERE)

Just this past Tuesday, Big Sean, Mickey Factz, and Free Sol continued their nationwide tour in Chicago at Reggie's Rock Club. Up first in our recap: Mickey Factz, who performed a mix of new cuts from the I'm Better Than You mixtape and some past favorites like the "Incredible RMX" f/ special guest Naledge who was in the house as well. The video kicks off with the infectious "We Young", where Factz was inspired to twirl the mic like a samurai swordsman and danced out to the Precize production. There are more moments of high energy when Factz also goes through the "Light Up Freestyle" and the beginning of "Paradise", also seen in the video compilation above. I enjoyed watching this again and again even though I was there so you should definitely give this video a look-see above! More footage from the show on the way by week's end.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Be sure to tune in TONIGHT to GWHH Radio at a special time of 7:30 CT on Vocalo.org 89.5 FM because our special guest in the studio is none other than... Mickey Factz! Lots of insightful chatter and a dope freestyle are to be expected. Stay tuned for the full preview post/weekly recap on the way this evening!

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Reunite at the Congress

DSC_1858 copy.jpg

This past Friday Bone Thugs-N-Harmony reunited at the Congress Theater for a GWHH-sponsored concert here in Chicago. It was great for this group to perform with a live band in front of a packed house and the photos turned out to be some of my more recent favorites. Seeing this group perfrom was personal to me because their music is what got me first listening to hop hop when I was in junior high. I also ran into local Chicago artist Nikki Lynette backstage, who talked with the group and now it looks like she will be collaborating with them! Overall, the Bone Thugs did not disappoint and the crowd loved hearing all of the group's classic hits. Several photos also taken by local jewelry designer, Julia Morel.

Jeremih's 'All About You' Release Party @ The Shrine

Chicago's own Def Jam's R&B star, Jeremih celebrated the release of his new album All About You on the day of its release as a part of Sucka Free Tuesdays with DJ iLLa at The Shrine. Jeremih started off the night performing his hit single "iLike," and then performed the #1 hit "Birthday Sex." Unfortunately after the introduction of "Birthday Sex" there was a minor group that interrupted the celebration but DJ iLLa managed to keep them quiet and encouraged the crowd to keep the party going. Jeremih showed his love by taking photos with his fans and hanging out with Willie Taylor (of Day 26) Terrell Taylor, Tone and Shag of Power 92, John Blu, Avrey Smith, and Miracle.

Make sure to get your copy of All About You in stores now featuring "Down on Me" with 50 Cent and "iLike" featuring Ludacris. In case you missed it, check out his newest version of "iLike," with an exclusive 2nd verse performed on BET's 106 & Park last week and finally, hit the gallery below for photos from the release party.

Bruno Mars + Fat Joe LIVE @ House of Blues: Chicago

Last week to the day, Bruno Mars & Fat Joe both graced the House of Blues stage here in Chicago for a special event put on by Blackberry. The combination seems unusual for a concert on paper, but our guy Monster was in the building and said the crowd was feelin' both artists throughout. Monster captured the above and below footage of their sets with Bruno Mars being seen from one of the HoB's overhead balconies and Fat Joe from the crowd.

The Bruno Mars compilation above features the new single "Grenade" (a song that I can't get enough of right now, produced by Brody Brown), an awesome mash-up of "Billie Jean", "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and "Seven Nation Army", the end of "Billionaire", and full performances of Bruno's solo "Nothin' On You" and of course "Just The Way You Are". Speaking of the latter, congrats go out to Bruno and Phil Lawrence as the hit single just hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100! This is especially satisfying for me because of my prediction of such events from my Fav. 5 recap of July (including a humorous line about the current #2 single... *Tibs goes up for the J... swish!*). Anyway, remember to support Bruno Mars' album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, available everywhere next week on October 5th!

Don't forget to check out Fat Joe's performance video below, which features the performances of his verse on "All I Do Is Win", "Lean Back", and "Make It Rain". Enjoy!

With The Roots serving as the house band for the entire line-up of acts, which also included Yahzarah, Curren$y, and Kid Sister, the stage was set for an epic night of music. The Roots, Q-Tip, & Curren$y 'Let's Ride' LIVE @ Hennessy Artistry

Hello world, I am Cam Be, the newest member of the Gowhere Hip Hop family. You can find out more about me at my website camovement.com. My main duties on this website will be both videography and photography.

My first mission was the Hennessy Artistry Tour kick-off in Chicago. Headlined by The Roots and Q-Tip. The concert was full of surprises including a guest appearance by Erykah Badu and this collaboration with Curren$y for the Q-Tip classic "Let's Ride". The highlight of the night for me was when The Roots announced the special guest artist of the night, Erykah Badu, the crowd went crazy! After an already slamming show we were awarded with 40 more minutes of greatness.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth LIVE @ The Shrine

DSC_1385.jpg
All photos by: Seth Kammueller

The other night, Pete Rock & CL Smooth made history at The Shrine in Chicago as the duo reunited for a performance for the first time in five years in the United States. Appropriately, the line outside was around the block and the crowd was shoulder to shoulder inside. The energy was kept high all night by DJ Sean Mac before Pete Rock & CL Smooth took the stage for their nearly hour-long set. Pete Rock primarily DJed front and center while CL Smooth played to the crowd on all sides as the duo performed many of their classics like "Straighten It Out", "One In A Million", and many more. Pete Rock also played a series of his classic productions in a 'who's who' session of sorts that was favorable with the crowd. And yes, Pete Rock did go from behind the turntables to the mic, joining CL Smooth on stage for a few songs including the end of their closing song, "T.R.O.Y." - the sure climax of the show and a moment I won't forget since their hit single is one of my all-time favs. After the show, we were confirmed to talk to Pete Rock & CL Smooth to talk about their big reunion on stage in the States, among other things, but everyone (including media) was hurriedly escorted out of the club. It would have made for the perfect icing on the cake to get Pete Rock & CL Smooth's thoughts on the historic night at The Shrine, but we still have some amazing stills from the evening in the gallery below, courtesy of GWHH's Seth Kammueller. Enjoy!

House of Winehouse (Amy Winehouse Tribute Band) at Wells Street Fall Fest 2010 Chicago

House of Winehouse, an Amy Winehouse Tribute Band, performs at the Wells Street Fall Festival this weekend. They performed all of Amy's great hits including "Rehab," but also managed to sing Lauryn Hill's "That Thing" and Marvin Gaye's "I Heard it through the Grapevine." The band was voted The Reader's Best Tribute Band 2010. Dana DeLorenzo is one hell of an actress, she entertains the crowd in between sets with smart comments that only Amy Winehouse could get away with....but had the crowd laughing. Her band members are very talented and all make a great team. Ken Hunnemeder - Guitar/Backup vocals, Charlie Drews - Bass, Patrick Gunderson - Drums/Backup vocals, Jerry Mohlman - Trumpet, Ellis Seiberling - Trombone and Jay St. Germain - Bari Sax. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Amy Winehouse!

Nelly Furtado LIVE @ Ravinia Recap

nelly furtado

Nelly Furtado came through to the amazing Ravinia venue in suburban Chicago last week for what was said to be her first performance in the U.S. in quite some time. I was not sure what to expect, but was happy to attend and enjoy the show and atmosphere. After all, I have liked some of Furtado's biggest U.S. singles over the years; some have been guilty pleasure tracks at their peak ("Say It Right" and "Promiscuous" for purely inside joke reasons), and now to see her perform was an unexpected and kind of a surreal experience. She was backed by a full band and backup singers - one of which, Jamie Garcia, joined her for a vibrant duet. Her versatility was on hand as she cranked out some uptempo, jazzy, and yes, spanish hits in addition to some slower material. My favorite singular performance was when she brought out the guitar for "All Good Things Come To An End", off her most popular, international album, Loose. She also performed a couple of new tracks including the popular 2009 Spanish single, "Fuerte", and the leak from this past spring called "Free". It was a fun, and certainly different show than I'm used to; you can check out some pictures I snapped in the gallery below. Enjoy!

Oh, Gowhere Hip Hop also got some cool concert footage of Too $hort performing many of his hits. He rocked "Freaky Tales", "I'm A Player", "Life is...Too Short", and "Blow The Whistle" among other grooves. Shouts to DJ Sean Mac & Fathom for the crowd control. They kept The Shrine hype the entire night!

Nas & Damian Marley LIVE @ North Coast Music Festival

The events of September 5, 2010 will be a night to remember for hip hop fans in Chicago's Union Park for the last night of the North Coast Music Festival. Mere moments after Lupe Fiasco had the crowd singing along to "Superstar", Nas & Damian Marley took over the 'North' stage across Union Park for what I called at the time: a hip hop fan's dream - imagine that! After all, both Nas and Lupe have quite the backing in any 'G.O.A.T.' conversation, and here they were performing one after another, providing Chicagoans with almost 3 hours of good hip hop!

Nas & Damian Marley didn't let the crowd's energy dip for one moment during their set as they each performed tracks from their Distant Relatives album and many of their solo classics. I was in the media pit for the first few songs, where I caught the duo performing "Leaders" and Nas performing the classic I alluded to above, "If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)". Better yet, I moved so close in the pit that I was actually looking straight up at Nas. I thought about untying his shoes for a moment, you know, just cause, but ultimately decided that wouldn't be a smart move.

Almost immediately after, our GWHH correspondent GY312 and I got on stage and was able to take in the rest of the set from behind the artists and the band! Unfortunately, no recording was allowed but I was able to sneak in a few TwitPics when Nas & Damian Marley inspired the crowd to pull out their phones and lighters. I also got in a couple pics of the 'wind chimes guy' as I thought of him. He was right in front of us, but only noticeable from the crowd if you took a careful look into the background. He was flat out in the ZONE! His subtle instruments definitely added a nice touch to the performance that probably went unnoticed in the crowd. It makes me appreciate the subtleties even more. From the vantage point of the stage, we were able to see how the entire crowd reacted to all of the songs. The arm swaying, the jumping up and down, and the aforementioned phones and lighters provided mental memories and images I will never forget. As one last bonus, Lupe Fiasco was just a few paces to my right, as I'm sure people with a keen eye saw for themselves, and he was vibing out and enjoying the entire set! All in all, it was an amazing experience and an awesome set from top to bottom from Nas & Damian Marley, who interacted with the crowd well and brought an energy that reverberated to the seemingly endless amount of people in front of them. Get your glimpse above. Enjoy!

Lupe Fiasco 'Girls Freestyle' LIVE @ North Coast Music Festival

Watch one last piece of Lupe Fiasco bonus footage that we were able to capture from last night's North Coast Music Festival as above, Lupe performs a song that he has only been doin' at various live shows; it is supposedly called the "Girls Freestyle" over some Prodigy (YouTube it!).  You'll notice right away an uptempo, synth-heavy production that I was diggin' off the bat. It is hard to decipher word for word what Lupe's saying, but his intense delivery is a much-needed and welcome compliment to the production. I hope we see an mp3 of this soon as it the freestyle was a surprising and welcome addition to Lupe's set that acted as the perfect prelude to his quick verse on the "Everyone Nose RMX". The video is recorded rather guerilla style as I was in the midst trying not to step on people laying down (seriously) as I proceeded to move up into the crowd (media was only allowed in the pit for a limited time). When I am not moving, the visuals are definitely watchable, but more importantly, the audio came through pretty clearly throughout. Press play above and see/hear for yourself. Enjoy!

Lupe Fiasco LIVE @ North Coast Music Festival

Lupe Fiasco closed out the Groupon stage at the North Coast Music Festival last night and above, Tibs and I were able to capture what we could of the diverse set. The performance marked the first time Lupe performed "Go To Sleep", which is just one of the few songs seen in the video above. We also got performances of "I'm Beamin", "Superstar", and an up close and personal look at "Hip Hop Saved My Life". It was an entertaining set that featured a mix of Lupe's well-known classics and new songs like "Scream" and "State Run Radio", predominantly set to the thumping, hard rock stylings of his band. They are an essential part of the equation which adds to the sinister vibe that I love, including Erik Hammer (guitarist), BAM (drummer), and DJ Simonsayz (wheels of steel). I can watch Lupe live forever...lol. He's probably one of the best performers, bringing crazy inner G to the set even when he's sick/losing his voice! It was a hustle to gather some of the footage you see above and big shoutout to the video screen, which provides some better visuals since we were sometimes behind a huge mass of people that came out to the last day of North Coast. Also after the jump, hit a gallery of some photos of Lupe from our guy Seth Kammueller, and you can also view MORE photos here. Enjoy!

Nas & Damian Marley + Lupe Fiasco North Coast Music Festival photo recap

Nas & Damian Marley

This past weekend I attended the North Coast Music Festival and the festival was an amazing experience. I was able to get front and center for headlining artists Nas & Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Lupe Fiasco. It was an experience in itself to see Nas & Damian Marley on stage together, accompanied by DJ Green Lantern, who were a perfect fit to close out North Coast.

Lupe Fiasco

Anyone who has seen Lupe knows he brings an incredible energy to his performances and last night was no exception. The hour-long set included many of his current hits as well as some new tracks like "State Run Radio", "Scream", and "Go To Sleep". Overall, I feel these artists were the highlight of the festival and it was awesome to capture them on camera. Take a look at all of the photos in the gallery below!

Jay Electronica LIVE @ North Coast Music Festival

Here's a rundown of some of the unique events that took place during Jay Electronica's set at the North Coast Music Festival:

  • Numerous a capellas... not too crazy, I know... but...
  • The first three rows were invited on stage by Jay Electronica.
  • Security tried to forcefully clear the stage; Jay Elect fires back, "But they're with me!"
  • Jay protects his people on stage while not missing a word of his verse.
  • Jay asks someone in the crowd for a live b, and proceeds to smoke and pass it with his people on stage.
  • Jay performs "Exhibit C" in the front row.
  • Jay invites a Milwaukee rapper from the crowd to jump on stage, hype up the crowd, and spit some rhymes.

Needless to say, it was a CRAZY set. Watch what I was able to capture above!

Khaled M LIVE @ NMCF - Toast of the Coast Rd. 2

This past week I attended North Coast Music Festival's Toast of the Coast Round 2. Round 2 of the competition was the final round to determine which top ten artist gets to perform at this years North Coast Music Festival. The showcase was held at the Tonic Room in Lincoln Park here in Chicago. The house was packed and each artist received a 10 minute slot to showcase their best talent. Check out the video and photos of one of my favorites from the showcase: Chicago's very own Khaled M.

Dwyane Wade's Chicago Has Talent Recap

This is the last of our coverage of Wade's World Foundation weekend and what better to spotlight than Dwyane Wade's Chicago Has Talent Showcase! You may have already seen the special live performances from Lupe Fiasco and Jeremih, but the event was really about showcasing the Chicago youth talent! The showcase was scored by Judge Greg Mathis, a talent scout, America's Next Top Model cycle eight winner Jaslene Gonzalez, and WGCI's radio personality Tony Sculfield. Acts ranged across everything you can think of: hip hop, R&B, dance, spoken word, you name it. Also there was never really a dull moment with hosts and comedians Damon Williams and Lil Rel to keep everyone laughing throughout. Check the video above to see the range of creativity, with even a dance group that dressed like Mortal Kombat characters! The winners however were two twin sister vocalists by the name of Namirajj, who took home the grand prize of a $1,000, weekend stay at Key Lime Cove, and an appearance on WGN's morning show.

The video above not only captures most of the Chicago talent, but you can also catch an intro from Dwyane Wade who of course was in the house at the Merle Reskin Theater downtown to kick off the event. And finally, peep a gallery of photos from the event below and the link to ALL of our coverage from Wade's World Weekend! Enjoy!

The Alchemical Transformation Of Gemstones

Gemini The Untamed Beast

PREVIOUSLY:
Gemstones 'On The Road To Glory My Story'
Presented by: Gowhere Hip Hop, Payola, FSD, Jr. Celeb, & PHLI
More info/review HERE

Late Saturday night, Gemstones took the stage at The Harold Washington Cultural Center and gave the crowd not just a show, but truly an experience. Gemstones takes us through his journey from Gemini to Gemstones. The journey from his fall as a human to a renewed rising and new beginning. A new beginning that is personified by the new project, On The Road To Glory My Story (download above!).

The video above begins the story of the concert experience. He performed many of his old classics as Gemini including "Got What You Need", "Southside", and "Bust Down". As you can see, he exhibits the break-neck flow and twist that you hear on record with paralleled clarity live.

The Alchemical Transformation of Gemstones (Pt. 2)

Next, we get into 'The Alchemical Transformation of Gemstones', as I like to call it. In one emotional transition, Gemini changes clothes into Gemstones to match his self-reflecting recording playing above. Gem then performs his full version of "Free Chilly" which turns into a long, passionate a capella. I'm tellin' you that you could really feel the energy. If you only have time to go through one video, go through Pt. 2 of the story above.

Gemstones 'On The Road To Glory' (Pt. 3)

Lastly, Pt. 3 features Gemstones performing some of the new songs from On The Road To Glory My Story, starting off with "Faded Pictures" and even bringing out the lil' guy Liam Pepol for "Grateful". From top to bottom, from Untamed Beast to Testimony of Gemstones to On The Road To Glory My Story, Gemstones brought the records and the journey to life and it was truly a moving performance. We urge you to take some time out today and watch the 3-part story from beginning to end, and if you can't get enough, peep some in studio footage of Gemstones courtesy of our friends at W.B.C. Magazine after the jump. Enjoy!

Lupe Fiasco & Jeremih LIVE @ Dwyane Wade's Chicago Has Talent Showcase

Lupe Fiasco "Kick, Push" x "Superstar"

Jeremih "I'mma Star (Everywhere We Are)"

This past Saturday we ventured over to the Merle Reskin Theatre in downtown Chicago for the 2nd annual Dwyane Wade's Chicago Has Talent Showcase. D-Wade brought out special hometown guests Lupe Fiasco and Jeremih to showcase their world-renowned talent amidst the 13 up and coming acts that the city's youth has to offer (footage of the latter coming soon). Up top, Lupe performs his two most universally known songs "Kick, Push" and "Superstar" to conclude the show. It was a fitting ending that had the entire theatre standing and singing the Matthew Santos chorus, a capella. Stay tuned to the end of that video to see D. Wade and Lupe on stage together.

Jeremih was an energetic opener for the entire showcase as he also had the crowd moving to last year's hit single "I'mma Star (Everywhere We Are)". The crowd also sang along to a song that was fitting for the talent showcase. Below, we caught Lupe and Jeremih on stage together showin' some Chicago unity. All in all, this was an excellent event that concluded the charitable and uplifting Wade's World Weekend and we look forward to presenting even more of the talented acts of the Chicago Has Talent Showcase in the near future right here at GWHH. Enjoy!

R. Kelly LIVE @ The Shrine (w/ 106 & Park's Rocsi)

The Shrine was the place to be last night as this edition of UltraSexy Fridays was hosted by 106 & Park's Rocsi. It was advertised that there would be a special, surprise guest and wouldn't you know it, the rarely seen R. Kelly joined Rocsi in the V.I.P.! Like the rest of the crowd, I was floored. I did not expect a surprise guest of that caliber, let alone R. Kelly since he even says himself in the video that he's not out much. But he does more than talking in the compilation above, R. Kelly graced the packed house with a few performances of his countless classics, with drink in hand. The most impressive was "Slow Dance (Hey Mr. DJ)", which leads off the video, as Kellz straight up belted the first verse a capella. You get a good grasp of how powerful his voice is in the video, and it was even more amazing in person.
In true baller fashion, R. Kelly sang "Bump And Grind" even as the DJ transitioned into Waka Flocka's "O Let's Do It". That footage also seen above is very entertaining because Rocsi is even doin' a little bump and grind with Kellz. In fact, they were dancing together all night and even looking like a cute couple in the process...

The video closes with R. Kelly performing "It Seems Like You're Ready", casually performing the iconic first verse. It was really a treat for everyone in The Shrine to witness one of the greatest singers of our time and I am still shocked the afternoon after about last night. Enjoy the night in photos in the gallery below as well and check out some more up close shots from The Shrine's club photographer, Richard Pack, here. Enjoy!

Avrey Smith 'No Apologies' Mixtape Release Party

Avrey Smith 'No Apologies' [MIXTAPE]
Features 20 NEW Tracks!

After his release of his 'No Apologies' mixtape, Avrey Smith had a special release party at the Victor Hotel on Monday night. The crowd was feeling the R&B flavor that Avrey brought to the stage and the building was packed with fans and local celebs. John Blu and Carl Thomas were just two of the celebs who came out to support Avrey. Check out Avrey performing "Grand Slam" and "BMF (Big Movie Feature)" in our video above.

Avrey defiantly brings his own "tatted boy swag" on-stage, whether it's in his outfit, his dancing, or singing he knows how to keep the ladies watching. One thing I like about him is that he can sing over just about any track you give him. Not many R&B artists can deliver on a rap record and still keep the hype. I recommend downloading No Apologies above and going to see him live. Wondering just how Avrey Smith got his start? Check out our previous interview with Avrey and Terrell Taylor at Miller Street Studios.

Mike Posner interview with Gowhere Hip Hop

Mike Posner '31 Minutes To Takeoff' [ALBUM]
Available NOW on iTunes for $7.99!

Over the weekend we met up with our homie Mike Posner at The Music Lounge in the Hard Rock Hotel, and got a chance to talk with him days before his Aug. 10th album debut! Ever since his first project A Matter Of Time, he's been making classic bodies of work depicting each stage he has evolved to in his life. At the time of that first project, he was taking classes and attracting fans friends all over the country. Then on his One Foot Out The Door he got a record deal selling out shows to thousands, but still finishing up college to get his diploma. Now with paper in hand, Posner's 31 Minutes To Takeoff depicts his total dedication to making music full time, and his full submersion into full blown fame. Only time will tell what this will do to Posner himself, but we already see some of Posner's early reflections of this on his MySpace where you can preview his album for free before its release tomorrow! Make sure you buy the album because it's an amazing body of work where he pulls together a true "all killer no filler super-awesome" album!

In the interview Tibs talks to Posner about the greater concept behind the title, 31 Minutes To Takeoff, where "something" happens 31 minutes into the album. Other album talk revolves around the making of "Bow Chicka Wow Wow" with Bruno Mars and his craziest "Cooler Than Me" story. We further got an idea of some of Posner's most interesting stories on the Warped Tour and cracking up at Will Ferrell right before he performed on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Stay tuned til the end of the interview for all those funny experiences and some bonus  hilarity between Tibs & Posner. We should all be on the lookout for more from Mike Posner with new singles hitting the radio soon and of course, the album in stores tomorrow! Finally, check out his performance of "Cooler Than Me", which had Belve Nights at the Hard Rock Hotel rockin'. If you look hard enough to the left of the stage, you can see Perez Hilton jammin' out to Posner's performance. We noticed at the time and appreciate Perez's genuine love for music. Big thanks to Mike once again and much continued success to come. Enjoy!

BONUS: Check out Mike Posner's feature on MTV's PUSH (contains live performances and interviews) and his performance live on Jay Leno tonight!

Kid Sister LIVE @ Perez Hilton's One Night In Chicago

Kid Sister brought her unique style and energy to the One Night In Chicago stage last night at the Hard Rock Hotel! Above, check out a variety of clips from her set, which feature many of her uptempo hits and Ultraviolet album cuts. One of my personal favorites was "Switch Board", but the overwhelming crowd favorites were between "Right Hand Hi" and Kid Sister's very first smash, "Pro Nails". If you have yet to see Kid Sister live (whether in person or on YouTube), then you may not realize how much Kid Sis lets loose and dances on stage. She definitely showcases her juke background as well on stage. Definitely a very fun and energetic performance that was even cooler to experience in person. Get a taste of what it was like in the video above and stay tuned for our exclusive interview with Kid Sister on the Perez Hilton's One Night In... red carpet. Enjoy!

B.o.B LIVE @ Perez Hilton's One Night In Chicago

B.o.B was the headline act at Perez Hilton's One Night In Chicago last night and performed an extensive set filled with past mixtape favorites to his two biggest smash hits to date: "Nothin' On You" and "Airplanes". Above, get a feel for the live show with a medley of songs performed by B.o.B, who was joined by special guest Playboy Tre for "Bet I Bust". B.o.B overcame a few sound issues (both with the mic and his guitar) and rocked out to the packed private event. He performed many album joints in addition to the big hits, opening with the bonus track (and one of  my personal favorites) "I See Ya" as well as other songs like "Don't Let Me Fall" and "Past My Shades". I held out some hope that we would see a surprise appearance by Lupe Fiasco for his verse on the latter, but to no avail. The biggest crowd response of the set obviously came with B.o.B's performances of "Nothin' On You" and "Airplanes" as the crowd spread their wings for that one.

Overall though, Bobby Ray had the crowd going from beginning to end. Everywhere I turned in the Hard Rock Hotel, I saw a group of people jumping up and down, bobbing their arms forward, and mouthing the lyrics to past songs like "Haterz Everywhere". Excellent show from B.o.B that could have been even better had it not been for the occasional technical issues. If you get the chance to see him live, and you very well could since B.o.B is visiting nearly every single city in the country, then don't hesitate to get out and rock out! Enjoy!

Clipse LIVE @ The Shrine

As promised, above is a cool medley of the Clipse live at The Shrine from last Thursday's grand event put on by XXL & Remy Martin! Clipse showed a lot of love to Chicago, only to be reciprocated by a hyped crowd throughout the night. They began their set with "Grindin'", which just boomed through the speakers, and proceed to perform many other hits off Til The Casket Drops such as "I'm Good", "Popular Demand", and more. It was cool to capture the crowd in front of us at certain peak moments when everybody had their right arm bobbing, which included myself while I filmed with the left!. I think the Clipse would be a good fit for the G.O.O.D. Music label if the rumors end up being true (touched on in our interview with Pusha T, brought back below), but either way much respect and continued success to them for making good music. Enjoy!

The Retar Crew LIVE @ American Theater Company

The Retar Crew caught our attention with their hilarious anthem on YouTube, and again when they appeared in Chicago's RedEye due to their "Blackhawks Song", which inspired similar side-splitting results. And above, we caught the group over at Chicago's American Theater Company performing a few songs including the anthem and an interactive a capella to kick things off. Gotta hand it to these guys, they're very witty and entertaining! Also at the American Theater Company, we caught another fun performance - this time coming from Chicago Break Dancers, one of whom was in a sling! Dope stuff all around so be sure to give these couple of videos a play or two. Enjoy!

The Cool Kids LIVE @ Reggie's Rock Club

The Cool Kids "Mikey Rocks" LIVE

This past Friday GY312 and I got a chance to kick it with The Cool Kids backstage @ Reggie's Rock Club where I caught some dope footage of the sold-out-show they murdered here in the Chi! Everyone's been talking about how crazy that show was, and we finally got some footage up of a few hits they threw down above and below. Definitely peep some of my favorites like "Black Mags", "Basement Party", "Pennies", and "Mikey Rocks" as well as a short but sweet gallery recap of the night below! This was the first show they had live instrumentation on stage, which added a cool groove (as GY would say), and also had singer Tennille chop it up on stage for some joints as well! Check out GY312's interview with The Cool Kids in case you missed it and enjoy this live footage!

Jeremih 'I Like' + 'Birthday Sex' LIVE in Chicago

Above we have some live performance footage of Jeremih's birthday this past Saturday at The Shrine put on by 3 Deep Chicago. The party lasted all night long, and was packed to the brim even having celebrity guests like Raekwon, Really Doe, and Drew Sidora come through. Jeremih touched the mic well after midnight performing his new single "I Like" off the upcoming album All About You, and couldn't leave the building without putting down the "Birthday Sex" single that brought him acclaim as well. All in all it was a dope birthday party! Check out the live performance medley above, and be sure to get the "I Like" single in case you missed it below. Enjoy!

BUY: Nizm 'Redefined Xpression'
$9.99 on iTunes!

Nizm rocks the Abbey Pub stage above in what was our first glimpse of seein' the Chitown rapper perform live! As you can see, Nizm brought out all the cards for his set which featured a diverse ensemble with backup singers, guitars, drums, and DJ Tim Jonz. We were impressed with Nizm's professional stage presence and awareness of being an entertainer on top of performing his songs. His set included various skits and interactions with the crowd (including a hilarious one at the end of the clip) as well as fluid transitions between his more intense hip hop songs and the more laid-back tunes in the video. Watch it all go down and preview/purchase the new album, Redefined Xpression, above. Enjoy!

We are giving away a FREE pair of tickets for Slum Village's performance this Saturday at Double Door! All you have to do is be the first person to e-mail us at gowherehiphop@gmail.com with the answer to the following question:

What is the title of the song on the 2000 album from Chicago legend Common that features Slum Village?

Keep it locked to this post for when the contest is closed. UPDATE: Contest closed. Congrats to Tamara M! The correct answer was "Thelonius" from Like Water For Chocolate. You can still buy your advanced tickets here.

Up next, we have a new track from Slum Village that surfaced today off what looks to be their last album, Villa Manifesto. It is a solid joint produced by the late J. Dilla that all hip hop heads should at the very least appreciate. Finally, one of the opening acts for the show on Saturday is Chicago rapper, Que Billah. QB performed live at Stretch1's birthday celebration and I caught a quick song over a dope electro-sounding beat and a fun a capella to conclude things. LA & Mr. Music "Out The Door (Winner RMX)"
Producer: The Y's - FULL, CDQ, Track off upcoming mixtape, Billboard Hot 100 Series *Tibs Fav.™

Yesterday, we launched the first of our coverage from last week's GWHH-sponsored show at the Abbey Pub from J. Beck & Shawn Til Dawn, and today we keep things moving as LA & Mr. Music graced the stage as well. Above, they performed "Out The Door", their previously released remix of Jamie Foxx, Justin Timberlake, & T.I.'s "Winner". Both the sound and vocals popped pretty well and the duo sounded a lot like the studio version (always a good thing). They always keep things entertaining with little nuances on stage, whether it's interacting with each other or the crowd, so look out for that as well. In case ya missed it, download the song and be on the lookout for the Billboard Hot 100 Series coming soon (hosted by GWHH & Julian of B96 Chicago)! Enjoy!

J. Beck & Shawn Til Dawn LIVE @ Abbey Pub

Last Thursday, we sponsored a showcase over at the Abbey Pub here in Chicago and first on the bill was J. Beck & Shawn Til Dawn. You may recall J. Beck from our previous feature on him last week as a Chicago public school teacher by day and rapper by night and you may have seen Shawn Til Dawn's video for "Puerto Rico". Now they join forces for a brand new song they said they wrote a week ago called "Freedom". Definitely an entertaining set with the band helping to add a nice background that is best experienced in person. But you can still get a grasp of the song with the video above so check it out and be on the lookout for more videos and photos from the Abbey Pub later on this week. Also, shoutout to Kidd Russell for puttin' the show altogether. Enjoy!

Trey Songz @ Taste of Chicago

trey songz taste of chicago
Trey Songz @ Taste of Chicago

Last Thursday, we made our way to the annual Taste of Chicago to experience the buzz about Trey Songz' free performance for ourselves. Maks G. and I arrived just on time as we randomly ran into our new correspondent Jen DeLeon amidst the announced total of 300,000 people at the Taste (go figure!). As we walked into the park, Trey opened up with a couple of his StarGate-produced singles "Can't Help But Wait" and "I Need A Girl" to the crowd's delight. Throughout the entertaining performance, Trey went from early hits like "Gotta Go" to newer ones like "Already Taken" and "Say Aah" as seemingly every female audience member sang along to every word. It was quite the eye-opening moment for us as we have followed Trey's career since the beginning and it's amazing to see how he has grown to superstar status. To best capture just how many people were there, we snapped the photo above from the all the way at the back. There were thousands of people behind the video screen. Meanwhile, there was another massive amount of people in front of the screen who were there hours before showtime to see Trey on stage. The video below captures the crowd from another angle as Trey's people captured some behind the scenes footage on stage, as well as the absolute craziness that ensued when he couldn't get out of the venue by car and instead decided to walk back to his hotel. And yup yuuup, he was swarmed by screaming fans the whole way. Enjoy!

Nikki Lynette at MOBFest Chicago

DSC_5597.jpg

Last night was MOBFest at Lasalle Power Co. and Chicago's own Nikki Lynette was the opening act. The crowd had just begun to fill the room as she went on. She sounded great and performed many of her hits including my favorite song "Beneath My City". The audience really enjoyed her performance and energy on stage. When I spoke to Nikki after the show, she said there was some sound trouble on the part of Lasalle Power Co. and was concerned about how it sounded. She said it was very important that she sound good that night and in my opinion, I thought she sounded great and so did everyone else in the room. Great job Nikki!

Donnis, Naledge, & Rockie Fresh LIVE

We're coming through today with the last of our coverage from Ruby Hornet's Digital Freshness at The Shrine a couple weeks back featuring headliner, Donnis. The Chicago hip hop scene always shows Donnis some love and in his set, you can see Naledge performing his contribution to the single "Gone" in addition to Hollywood Holt, Mic Terror, and DJ Timbuck2 jumpin' on stage with them! As a prelude to Donnis' set, Chicago's own Rockie Fresh performed a series of his jams including "Make It Right", which we captured below. This Thursday was the MOBFest Hip Hop Showcase at The Bassment.  Performances included BBU, Max Payne, G.o.D. Jewels, Big Homie D.O.E., and YP.  The crowd was smaller compared to some that I have seen at The Bassment but those who were there really enjoyed the show.  I especially enjoyed BBU and YP. I never heard BBU before that night but was really impressed. Those who have not seen these guys should definitely check them out. However, my favorite performer was YP. GemStones LIVE at The Bassment

Gemstones2web.jpg

GemStones LIVE @ The Bassment

GemStones performance at The Bassment Friday night was HOTT! Literally everyone in there was sweating to death, but it was worth losing all the weight for.

His voice is amazing and lyrics are inspirational, but in person, he is more than an artist, and gives more than just a performance. During the show, he stops the music to go a cappella and shows his voice within while also talking to the audience about his lyrics. When performing "Skeletons", he stops to ask if anyone has a skeleton in their closet, everyone in the crowd raised there hand and screamed "yes."

Chicago violence was a topic of discussion, when performing, "Everything's Ok". GemStones talks about the troubles of the world, especially all the shootings Chicago has had in the last year and states that you don't have to result to violence. "If you put your mind to it, you can climb on air." He also refers to the success that he has had, has come from working hard and believing that anything is possible. "I suggest you hold your head and keep a positive mind, cuz if you make your bed I take it you know where your lyin."

Could GemStones be the next Chicago scholar? I am not sure, but what he is doing is giving inspiration and hope to all of us out there that still have a dream.

The show was hosted by Merk Murphy and Tessa G. Other performances by: Substance, Caliko, Arlo, Young Auto, A-Way, F.O.C. and DJ Gemini Jones.

Look out for GemStones Launch Party August 21st @ the Harold Washington Cultural Center, 4701 S. King Drive. Keep up to date @ Go Sity Entertainment

B96 Summer Bash Concert Recap

B.O.B.
B.o.B @ B96 Summer Bash

Chicago's hit radio station B96 threw yet another awesome Summer Bash concert this past Saturday at Toyota Park. The lineup included T-Pain, Ludacris, B.o.B, Cascada, Jason Derulo, IYAZ, Taio Cruz, and New Boyz, along with B96's top DJ's. Also performing at the pre-bash were two upcoming artists that have long been spotlighted on GWHH: LA & Mr. Music and Mr. Robotic (more coverage coming soon).

Some of my favorite highlights included:  A special appearance by Perez Hilton, IYAZ performing "Pyramids" along side Charice, and Ludacris introducing up and coming Chicagoans B.X.C! Luda also performed with Taio Cruz singing their hit song "Break Your Heart" - a personal favorite song of mine. I also loved how Cascada showed off her dance moves, and B.o.B pretended to fly around stage as he sang "Airplanes". As for Jason Derulo, he took the stage with an amazing and entertaining set, ending it by ripping off his shirt while performing "In My Head", which really got the crowd going. Check out the photographs taken by me below and experience the 2010 B96 Summer Bash for yourself. In addition, you can check out B96.com for more video coverage of the Bash. Enjoy!

Ludacris (above) headlines 103.5 KISS FM's Fantabuloso

This past Friday, one of the premiere radio stations here in Chicago, 103.5 KISS FM put on quite the show at the Allstate Arena hailed as 'Fantabuloso'. We were on hand to witness the jam-packed lineup that featured Ludacris, Trey Songz, B.o.B, Ke$ha, Jason Derulo, Jay Sean, Taio Cruz, Orianthi, and Kevin Rudolf. Some highlights included: B.o.B beatboxing and singing the last bridge of "Nothin' On You", Jason Derulo surprising us with an entertaining set that showcased his dancing ability, being able to experience 'the leap' that Trey Songz has made with the whole audience drawn to every a capella, and Ludacris performing "Sex Room" with Trey Songz and "Break Your Heart" w/ Taio Cruz. Teron James Live at the Help Me, Help Haiti show

We're excited to introduce a brand new Chicago R&B singer on the come-up by the name of Teron James! Teron has steadily grown recently after opening up for Ginuwine in Milwaukee and with a brand new single "Sober" that is just about ready to hit the radio. It was this live performance at the Help Me Help Haiti benefit concert at the Portage Theater that further illustrated his talent. It was our first time checkin' him out live and just like the rest of the crowd, we were floored by the talent. Teron did the majority of his set a capella - a decision that helped illustrate his vocals in a powerful way. You can see Teron ride the wave at the beginning of the video before launching into "Sober" where he had the crowd steady slow clapping. Be on the lookout for much more from Teron James to come!

Stream the single "Sober" and find out more about Teron James here.

S-Preme performs live at Help Me Help Haiti

The Help Me Help Haiti coverage continues above with some brand new footage of S-Preme's set featuring Mr. Music. S-Preme and Mr. Music performed a couple of their collabs from S-Preme's The Sicktape Volume Two - the first being "Goin' Away" and the second "Top Of The World". You can get a sense of the contrast between S-Preme and Mr. Music right away in the video with "Goin' Away", which was even that much more powerful in person and my highlight of the set. S-Preme also rocks a couple solo joints - his favorite track "Shoppin'" and the Soundtrakk-produced "Go Hard". For any doubters out there who think S-Preme can't rhyme as fast as he does in the studio live, well, he proves you wrong in the video above. I also brought back our video of LA & Mr. Music's set, which we posted last week, so you can also watch that below for your convenience. Big things to come this year for these talented artists that we've been pushin' here at GWHH so check 'em out in these live performance videos! Enjoy!

LA & Mr. Music LIVE at the Help Me Help Haiti show

LA & Mr. Music performed an energetic and emotional set at last week's Help Me Help Haiti event, selectively choosing the songs "Anything Is Possible" (not yet released), "The Stars", and "Number One Provider". The group took the big stage at the Portage Theater and used every square foot of it to entertain the crowd, especially as LA jumped up and down on the sides of the stage. They effectively shared the positive and uplifting messages behind "Anything Is Possible" and "Number One Provider", which especially resonated with the people given the cause of the event. If you could only feel the energy when they called for a moment of silence for Haiti at the beginning of "Number One Provider"! The crowd jumped out of their seats for the club single "The Stars" and overall, LA & Mr. Music performed another unique and entertaining show, this time for Haiti. Watch Big Sean Perform "Supa Dupa Lemonade" at the Wild Hare

UPDATE: Scroll below for footage (via DudeGotBars) of the upset rapper who took the mic, threw it off stage, and then proceeded to get tackled ROCK BOTTOMED off stage by host, Hustle Simmons, and then stomped on by crowd . NOTE: Do not say "F*** Chicago" in Chicago. Results do not vary.

Hustle Simmons Rock Bottom's Goon Off Stage

Big Sean invaded the Wild Hare here in Chicago, performing some of his biggest hits to date to the packed house. The video above captures the high-energy conclusion of the concert as Big Sean delivered every word to the highly-acclaimed "Supa Dupa Lemonade" and then broke into "Fat Raps" with special guest Chip Tha Ripper. As you can see, the crowd was absolute bedlam for "Supa Dupa Lemonade", bouncing to the infectious beat and singing word for word with the 2010 XXL Freshman. Seeing how hyped the crowd got for the song really drove home just how big this song blew up. Easily the highlight of the set as "Supa Dupa Lemonade" has been quite the pump up song for us lately.

Chip clearly delivered his bars soon after and the crowd not only vibed with him but also knew all the words as well. Sean does his verse on "Fat Raps" and then concludes the concert with a motivational, uplifting message to the people to go out and accomplish what you want to accomplish!

On a sour note, Big Sean was interrupted a few songs in by an unknown artist who snatched his mic and exclaimed "F*** Chicago! I was supposed to perform tonight...". Immediately after he chucked the mic into the crowd, hitting an overhead light in the process. And that's where I lost him. Not sure what happened to him after that in the Chicago filled crowd, but he definitely got escorted out one way or another! This craziness unfortunately cut Sean's set short but it was great to see Big Sean overcome the mishap and finish the show strong.

Finally, Big Sean also came through to the RSVP Gallery for a meet and greet earlier in the day, graciously signing autographs, taking pictures, and talking to fans of all ages. Take a look at the gallery below also featuring RSVP Gallery owners Marc Moran and Don C. Enjoy!

Donnis LIVE at Lincoln Hall in Chicago

New Atlantic Records signee Donnis was in Chicago last night, performing at the brand new Lincoln Hall. Watch Donnis roll through a couple songs above from our unique angle on the second floor of the venue. He did a nice job of getting the crowd involved and increased the energy as his set progressed. The energy was only further ignited by many Chicago artists who were on hand, highlighted by Hollywood Holt's stage dive into the crowd around the 4:30 mark. Other sightings include Mic Terror (who performed prior to Donnis), He Say She Say, YP, Big Homie D.O.E., Scheme, and Rockie - some of whom we snapped pics with as you can see in the gallery below. Donnis linked up with Mic Terror, YP, Scheme, and Big Homie D.O.E. and even performed the "Whaddup RMX" for the first time since they were all under one roof! The upstart clothing boutique Jugrnaut hosted the event and also gave away some of their new tees to the Lincoln Hall crowd. Lookin' forward to more shows that the new Lincoln Hall has to offer - a venue that Tibs and I came away pretty impressed with as well. Enjoy!
