Gotta appreciate the creativity in the song and video from One Block Radius, whom you may already be familiar with from their 2008 breakout hit "You Got Me". In their latest single, "Broke Ass Holiday", the group conveys the positive message of not succumbing under tough times and finding different avenues to make the best of it. The song is catchy and the video is a well-directed, fun watch that also includes some Rush Hour-esque end credits and outtakes. Of course that inspires an impromptu 'Top-5 music videos I wish had an extra one minute of outtakes' list.
In reverse order of course...
#5. Kanye West "Heartless"
Moreso cause I'm just curious as to what the outtakes of this animated video would consist of. It could be anything, like Kanye messing up those mannerisms that were recorded and then animated?! Hype Williams barking orders to a series of graphic design interns?! Either way, I need to see some more stories about how they made that video.
#4. Common "I Want You" f/ Will.I.Am.
Look at that cast: Common, Will.I.Am. (obviously), Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington, Serena Williams, Jeremy Piven. Guaranteed it was fun with all those personalities involved and you get the sideplot of Common and Serena, a now widely-reported couple, who were not at all public back then.
#3. Any Akon video post-Trouble album.
I remember seeing a video interview awhile back (like 1-2 yrs awhile) where Akon talked about how he had actresses from the video (politically correct term for video hoes) in his trailer all the time. Can you imagine the possibilities of Akon messing up a take and then having an even more awkward situation with the girl he just finished playing "Smack That" for in his trailer?
#2. Drake "Best I Ever Had"
Just because Drake prolly had 117 takes because he was either distracted by his basketball team or because he was laughing at the fun, yet kinda ridiculous idea from director Kanye West (bonus pts if we got director's commentary). That means there's likely a good percentage of hilarious outtakes and/or bloopers that get recorded and since Drake was a former actor, it's probably a safe bet he knows how to handle outtakes for the positive. Seems like it woulda been a fun set (no pun intended) to be around.
Related tangent: Has any top 10 Billboard hit ever NOT had at least 4.5 stars on its YouTube video? "Best I Ever Had" only has 4 and over 10 million views.
#1. Dr. Dre "Nuttin' But A 'G' Thang" f/ Snoop Dogg
Goin' old school for no. 1 - the opening sequence had to be a camera man's nightmare as he/she would have had to navigate through a messy house holding a steady camera without falling over. Yes, it's not the hardest thing in the world, but I can imagine a couple takes where the cameraman tripped over a dirty laundry hamper, ruined the take, and the ensuing reaction from a stoned 1992 Snoop Dogg. Yeah. Admit you just chuckled.
Hope you enjoyed that; there's surely hundreds and thousands of videos that are sure to have had hilarious outtakes that we'll never see. In fact, I can probably come up with an entirely new top 5 if I just thought about it for an hour longer. The point being: more artists should include outtakes in the last minute of their videos a la One Block Radius.
Finally, I slept on the Soul Train Music Awards the other night and was reminded when I heard about a steamy, on-stage kiss between Toni Braxton and Trey Songz. So below is that video and after the jump is the rest of the nite's performances. Enjoy!
