Purely a post about the 2010 Grammy Nominations, some of which were announced on CBS (with LL Cool J, above, hosting) and the rest released in full in this 55-page document. I extracted some of the relevant ones and have some commentary after the jump.

Best Rap Album

Flo Rida - R.O.O.T.S.
Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Q-Tip - The Renaissance

Some thoughts as I first read them:

- The amount of times I see Black Eyed Peas in the list makes me wanna puke (maybe a lil' harsh but I can't stand their singles).
- Nice to see Mos Def get some Grammy love (repeated when I saw The Ecstatic in Best Rap Album).
- I think Kanye West has a good chance of getting a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.. 3 out of the 5, haha!
- Funny that after all of Weezy's collabs in the past year, he's nowhere to be found in the major awards.
- I laughed and rolled my eyes when I saw "I'm A Boat" up for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Laughed because it reminded me that that song is hilarious. Rolled my eyes because... really?! How is that nominated for a Grammy? It's just a silly song. I bet Drake and Trey Songz are heated that "Successful" wasn't nominated (and that's just the first  that came to mind of many... MUCH more deserving collabs).
- Almost fell out of my chair when I saw Flo Rida's R.O.O.T.S. up for Best Rap Album. 1. WHAAAAT?!?! 2. Flo Rida is much more pop than hip hop. 3. How heated must every other rapper be? Especially Raekwon, Rakim, Busta Rhymes, Slaughterhouse, and Fabolous (and that's just off the top). Wow. It woulda made things the slightest degree better if Flo Rida ruled pop music in 2009 but frankly, he didn't (and the absence of any other noms reflect that). I'm not gonna get swept up in predictions but I do think Eminem's gonna take this.
- The above two points leaves me (and millions of other hip hop fans) very disappointed in the Grammy nomination process and the Grammy's credibility just goes way south after that. I now only have the desire to tune in for the performances. Below is some R&B categories and sure, some more thoughts.

Best New Artist
Zac Brown Band
Keri Hilson
Silversun Pickups
The Ting Tings

Best Female R&B Vocal Performance
Beyoncé "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)"
Melanie Fiona "It Kills Me"
Lalah Hathaway "That Was Then"
Ledisi "Goin' Thru Changes"
Jazmine Sullivan "Lions, Tigers, & Bears"

Best Male R&B Vocal Performance
Anthony Hamilton "The Point Of It All"
Maxwell "Pretty Wings"
Musiq Soulchild "Sobeautiful"
Pleasure P "Under"
Charlie Wilson "There Goes My Baby"

Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group
Jamie Foxx & T-Pain "Blame It"
India.Arie & Musiq Soulchild "Chocolate High"
Musiq Soulchild & Mary J. Blige "Ifuleave"
Robert Randolph & The Clark Sisters "Higher Ground"
Love Has Finally Come At Last "Calvin Richardson & Ann Nesby"

Best R&B Song
Beyoncé "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)"
Jamie Foxx & T-Pain "Blame It"
Jazmine Sullivan "Lions, Tigers, & Bears"
Maxwell "Pretty Wings"
Pleasure P "Under"

Best R&B Album
Anthony Hamilton - The Point Of It All
India.Arie - Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics
Ledisi - Turn Me Loose
Maxwell - Blacksummers' Night
Charlie Wilson - Uncle Charlie

Best Contemporary R&B Album
Beyoncé - I Am... Sasha Fierce
Jamie Foxx - Intuition
Pleasure P - The Introduction Of Marcus Cooper
Trey Songz - Ready
T-Pain - Thr33 Ringz

- Congrats Melanie Fiona! That was a pleasant surprise.
- "Blame It" is a pop song, not an R&B song, yet it's one that is well-deserved of recognition b/c that was the no-contest #1 hit when that came out.
- Maxwell should own
- Ready NOT nominated for Best R&B Album?!
- ...Oh, ok.
- T-Pain nominated with the other 4 just looks hilarious. Another pop artist taking away a deserving nom for a real (contemporary) R&B artist. SMH.
- Isn't John Legend's Evolver eligible this year.. or was it last? Come to think of it, I think it was nominated last year.

Finally, it warrants mentioning that the cutoff date for albums and singles was before September 1, 2009. So that's why albums like Blueprint 3 and singles like "Empire State Of Mind" (sorry, both examples happen to be Jay) aren't nominated this year. Other recently released albums/singles that came to mind that I expect nominations for next year...? Man On The Moon: End Of Day, "Yesterday" - Toni Braxton & Trey Songz, hopefully Wale's debut Attention: Deficit, "Forever" (assuming that wasn't eligible.. if it was, then I'm once again bewildered...). I'm sure there's more that I'm missing but I have no desire to think more than I already am about the Grammys. And it's already been too much. Drop your reactions, thoughts, suggestions, disgust, congrats - I'm sure you got somethin'!
