Trey Songz just released his video for "I Invented Sex" via Twitter and in the process taught the industry a lesson about utilizing the latest social media craze to the fullest. The video itself is really one for the ladies but I would like to use its spotlight as a forum to express the genius behind promoting the video.
Trey Songz and his people behind the scenes created an application that allowed his hundreds of thousands of followers first-look access at the video through their Twitter accounts. The application automatically re-tweeted Trey Songz' official account. The tweet contained a link to the video and the #treysongz and #inventedsex hashtags. So while followers were watching the video, they sent out the same tweet to their followers, further spreading the word. In a matter of 10 minutes, "#inventedsex" became a trending topic, which undoubtedly increased interest from people who may not know Trey Songz but were on Twitter and curious about the trending topic. Therefore, there are people out there who got their first glimpse at Trey Songz and may now be fans - fans that Trey Songz didn't have before. On top of all this, the link for the video is hosted on his official website: TreySongz.com - which again allows new and returning visitors alike a place to find out all about the R&B star. Pure genius. Try it with this link.
So for all the artists out there, this event stresses the importance of having a great public relations team behind you. You may have the talent but just as important, you need that talent to be heard by as many people as possible. Revolutionary ideas like this are always out there to try and get new fans and new people to listen to music. It's important to tap into all the available resources and find passionate people to help promote your projects. In somewhat of an aside, I can speak for Maks G. and say that we appreciate any artist who reciprocates the promotion for us in exchange for the promotion of them. Thank you. It only helps both of us grow and it's another example of how you can utilize today's resources (blogs) to your advantage. And for everyone out there, I hope this is a(n) (added) realization of the wonders of Twitter and social media to the music industry and in general. I am currently writing an in-depth piece about the subject comin' up very soon so be on the lookout for that!
Down below, there's more music and videos from the day including a new one from Chicago's Big Homie DOE, a collabo from Ludacris and Jennifer Hudson, a trio of Plies jams *yawns*, and some videos featuring Melanie Fiona, Amerie, Robin Thicke, and Emilio Rojas. Enjoy!
