FULL, CDQ, Rumor track off upcoming album, Lasers (NOT on Lasers)*TIBS FAV.™
MORE Lupe Fiasco gracing 2day's updates - this one is pure FIRE, Rod Kimble style¹. In all seriousness, this new track comes outta nowhere² as Lupe Fiasco goes in on a sped up production/sample of Jimi Hendrix's 1969 classic "Fire". The production has that uptempo hip hop touch and Lupe matches it lyrically, goin' over the top of domes by settin' that tone in the 1st verse. I'm still trying 2 decipher some of the meanings behind the lyrics that you should expect by now from Lupe Fiasco. There are some punchlines you'll dig on the 1st listen; how bout that Asher Roth / Marshall Mathers line 2 conclude the 2nd verse? But wow, this track is addicting and I'm still marveling at its originality. Yet, it inspires so many questions.
Is this really off Lasers? If so, could this be a mainstream hit? The Hendrix sample - that has gotta have a HUGE sample clearance price tag - gives it some potential. There's speculation (shouts 2 UHTN) that this track was in response to his snub off the MTV's Hottest MC list³.
Look for this post 2 be updated with more information when/if it comes out and some lyrics (Check the comments, Lupe's comment on the L.U.P.End blog extracted below, and hit the jump for lyrics).
"Not a diss of the list...knew I wasnt gonna make it ha!...but I'm using
the fact that I wasn't on it as an excuse to just start wrecking shit
on a frequent basis so by the time the next one comes out i'll be
number 1,2,3,4 and 5..."
- Lupe Fiasco speaking on "Fire"
Final thought: Lupe would MURDER this in a live concert. My goodness. Enjoy!
¹ One of those references is clear, obvious, and lame... the other is hilarious if you have seen this
² My first reaction was "Whaaaaaaat?" like I'm Stretch1
³You may have noticed I haven't posted anything on the MTV's Hottest MC List; well, that's because I think it's just silly in the first place. Way 2 much subjectivity that it just ends up creating drama. 10 people's definition of "hot" is way different than that of me and 9 of my friends... and that's not counting the subjectivity of the people who compile the list, though I do respect their opinions, in the end.. it's just a list.
damn, i like Lupe as much as the next guy but you need to hop off his you know what a lil bit sometimes...highly doubt this track will be a "mainstream" hit either
oh c'mon, implying that im on his d*** is lazy. he really brought it on this one and the overall originality brings it 2 another level. yes lupe is my favorite rapper, but i dont like ALL his stuff. and as more ppl are talking, it looks like "Fire" won't be on Lasers.. in that case, this wont go on radio for sure.
if you dont like ALL his stuff im very surprised since i cant recall ever seeing a solo Lupe track on GWHH that didnt get your Fav stamp of approval lol. anyway my issue is that i honestly dont feel like he "brought it" on this track, but its all relative.. to each his own.
well there has been a few here and there that I can dig thru the archives for. and there's surely songs on his albums/mixtapes that dont get posted that I skip through and wouldnt get that stamp haha. ur right that it's all relative - 2 each his own indeed
some more thoughts... not sure how/why the rumor is that Lupe's lashing back at the MTV list. from his stance on the Vibe bracket from a couple yrs ago, I cant imagine him caring about this one as well. keep in mind that its just a rumor.
and also, for the clear reason of sample clearance issues, it's simply logical that this is more likely than not, err.. NOT on 'Lasers'
(Cut off again? I think it's cause I tried to use a 'less than' sign)... there are more than a few heads on that list that are inferior Lupe. Current music (radio-wise and underground), continues to go downhill all across the board. I can't remember the last time I heard a really timeless track. I don't care for tracks that are just better than the worst.
haha abraham.. yeah many share the same POV on current radio and even non mainstream radio. Lupe has always stood out with original lyrics and.. well, I could go on... haha. but that's why our readers should always take a look at the relative unknowns that earn features on the site :D
