A Gold Coast Promotion

I am a graduate student at DePaul University studying journalism. Currently I am living in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood with my husband and our 5-month-old son.

Originally from Huntley, Illinois, Lindsay Nyman moved to the Gold Coast for college four years ago and has made a name for herself in the big City. As a recent graduate of Columbia College, Lindsay started working part-time interning for a lighting resource company in October and, thanks to all of her hard work and dedication, she said they are planning on promoting her to full-time very soon.

Since she accredits the Gold Coast for much of her success, I decided to talk to Lindsay to find out more about what makes this neighborhood produce such driven individuals.

Q: Exactly where do you live in the Gold Coast and how long have you been living there?

A: I have been living on the corner of State and Scott Streets for four years now. I found the building because my aunt and uncle had owned a condo there, and I needed to get out of the dorms when I was a sophomore at Columbia--so they let me rent their unit from them. Now I have moved downstairs to a condo on the 10th floor that my parents bought as an investment property. It is a different style studio that we gutted and remodeled based on my needs, and I have been living there for three years now.

Q: Out of all the Chicago neighborhoods to live, why did you choose the Gold Coast?

A: I had no idea what the Gold Coast neighborhood was when I first heard where my aunt and uncle's apartment was. I had just moved to the City from the suburbs and wasn't completely familiar with it. Immediately upon living here, I found everything to be so accessible! From my apartment, I am only three blocks away from the Jewel, redline and buses. I am also three blocks away from the lake and have access to Michigan Avenue, restaurants and Rush Street. After living here for four years and exploring other neighborhoods, I decided that I would never leave! I feel like I am spoiled here.

Q: Can you tell me a little about your current internship?

A: I currently work at Morr-Sharp Associates, which is a lighting resource company located on State Street. I currently work as a sales assistant, working at the materials library with all the fixtures to show the clients. I also go on calls with the sales associates to explain the product and take care of direct orders and sample product orders. I also do onsite visits and work on problem solving in the field.

Q: When did you graduate from Columbia College and what was your major?

A: I graduated from Columbia College in May with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Interior Architecture.

Q: What are some of the perks about living in the Gold Coast?

A: What aren't the perks! Everything is here! There are tons of bars and restaurants and easy access to the Lake. There is a bike path and I can walk to work! I can honestly walk anywhere. It feels as though the Gold Coast is just far enough from the Loop that it's its own little neighborhood and, plus, I live just one block away from the most historic residential street in Chicago's history--Astor Street.

Q: Is there anything you dislike about living in the Gold Coast?

A: It gets loud weekend nights with people leaving the bars and screaming, but after a while, you just get used to it. Where isn't there noise in the city?

Q: Is there anything about living in the Gold Coast that has helped you be so successful?

A: I just think that it is more or less a privilege to live in the Gold Coast--people look at you different when you tell them you live there. Not that I am big on status, but it is nice. I have my parents to thank for helping me! It's like a family here--I am a regular at Butch McGuires, and through there, I have met so many people and become friends with so many of them.

I keep saying that I will never move out of this apartment until I get married because it is not worth losing!
