The power of speed
Forgive me. I'm confused which is my natural state of being.
I'm confused about the Sox trade, the one that's supposed to happen.
You know, the one involving the mighty Mark Teahen coming to the south side. If you haven't heard much about Teahen it's because he plays in Kansas City where losing has become as common as the Cubs not playing in a world series.
Teahen is a jack of all trades and a master of none. He can play third base where he makes lots of throwing errors, and right field, where I'm told he's adequate at best. He's an average hitter with average power whose numbers have declined and he's only 28. At least he hits left handed and has decent gap power.
But if the Sox trade Chris Getz and don't resign Scott Podsednik, where's the speed? They stole half of the Sox 113 bases. I thought this team wanted to get faster. Jim Thome is gone and it appears Jermaine Dye won't be back, either. That's a lot of power for a team that relies on it at homer friendly U.S. Cellular Field. So the Sox need more speed and power. Maybe Ken Williams has something up his sleeve and history notes Williams is the only baseball general manager with three sleeves. His team needs to shore up its hideous defense to back what sure looks like a very formidable starting staff.
But where's the speed? Alex Rios? Ok, he swiped 24, 5 with the Sox while not hitting MY weight and for those of you who haven't seen me, 12 ounce curls result in muscle strains.
Alexei Ramirez? He had 14 steals. Not bad.
Gordon Beckham managed 7. Jayson Nix stole 10 though what his role is if any, remains to be seen.
Maybe I shouldn't be confused. Maybe the three sleeved Williams is about to make a big splash and sign Chone Figgins. But he'll cost a bundle and the Sox are very cost conscious these days.
I need the weekend off to decipher all of this.
By the way, have the Cubs gotten rid of Milton Bradley yet?
