With the news that Lucasfilm is suing a local billboard company, it seems only fitting that Star Wars fans take George Lucas to court! The court of public opinion that is...
A couple months ago, I was approached by the producers of the indie film The People vs George Lucas about using footage from my comic-book review show in their documentary. As an avid Star Wars fan, of course I said 'yes'.
Now I'm getting a look at what I'm a part of...

Star Wars Fans take George Lucas to court!
Never let it be said that Star Wars fans aren't passionate! Seeing some of the stuff that's included in the trailer, the rants that I contributed will seem rather tame in comparison.
(If my memory serves, part of my rant had to do with how LucasFilm keeps releasing and re-releasing the Star Wars films in "new" editions, compelling collectors to buy the movies yet again. I can only imagine what's going to happen when the BluRay editions hit the market!)
As a long time Star Wars fan, this really is a dream come true. I don't expect to be on the screen for more than a few seconds at a time, but still, this one is gonna earn me some serious geek-cred in SW fandom circles.
The film debuts at SXSW this March! You can also visit the film's official web site for more info.

I like Jar Jar Binks. Jar Jar, or someone like him had to be in Phantom because 3PO was yet in his infancy, so to speak.
Speaking of 3PO, I wonder just how many times his memory had been erased? Because sure as shoot 3PO would have recognized, his maker--if only by name.
A New Hope really set the stage for the franchize, but Lucas was flying by the seat of his pants. He was caught off guard by the popularity of Star War, and he did not follow through. The story grew into a father and son saga, instead of what he had originally inteneded, as stated back in 1978 (I believe it was in Fangore magazine): that Star Wars was the story of two droids, and their misadventures. If you have watched all six films, you will see that he tentatively stays true to that--in that R2 and 3PO are in each of the six installments--however, the story more accurrately surrounds them, rather than is about them.
While I have the opportunity, I want to say that I like Phantom, but hate Clones, and and (see I hate it so much that I cannot even think of the name of the last prequel) whatever the last one was called. I did not even go to the theatre to see the last one, because Lucas had so ruined the series with Clones.
Episode one was perfect, classic Lucas magic, but then disaster at Attack of the clones, and the final film was so heinously bad that I will not even go into it.
Anyway, here is how it was supposed to go after Episode One: Jar Jar Binks dies in a fiery diaster of his own making, and 3PO resumes his spot on the slapstick throne. Skywalker becomes beloved by fans by performing selfless acts of heroics as he is being training to be a Jedi Knight by the rebelious Obi Wan during the Clone Wars (note plural, like World War I and World War II, which were not established in the films). Episode two would end with the fans slobbering over Anakin like we had over Luke, with some wonderful charming and heroic finish as the Empire was ramping up to crush the Republic.
Now on to Episode three (the one prior to A New Hope). This film would again begin with the world at war, but things would be grim, and hope failing as the Empire won victory after victory. Anakin himself would break obedience and fall in love with a princess, or someone of power,(perhaps even and affair with the Supereme Canselor's young wife (giving a three muskateer aspect to the story). She would become pregnant with Anakin's love child (in this case twins). The Sith would wage war against the Jedi, in effect creating a gunslinger atmosphere to the movie, where every low-life, bounty hunter, thug, rogue is hired to kill, betray, ambush, and murder every Jedi Knight, until there are only three: Yoda, Obi Wan, and Anakin. And finally, because of Anakin's affair and his betrayal, and perhaps Obi Wan coming between Anakin and his love, Obi Wan and Anakin fight to the death. Obi Wan leaves Anakin for dead, thinking he has fallen to his death in a volcano or such (but remember, the Star Wars book said that Darth Vader recieved much of his wounds from the Clone wars, which means that as a good guy Jedi Anakin got beat up, maybe). So the film has a dark ending, darker than Empire (the fan favorite). It ends with Yoda in hiding, Obi Wan in hiding, Luke and Lea seprated and hidden from their father (who by the way had no clue that he was a father--see Empire and Jedi for details).
And then comes A New Hope! What a glorious story, and a wonderful complete series it would be. The greatest movies collection in the history of movies, BUT it was not to be...because of LUCAS.
In my opinion, episodes two and three must be trashed and redone.

Well, to answer your first question, Threepio had his memory erased at the end of Episode Three, which would account for him not recognizing Vader in later episodes. Even then, though, he never saw Anakin in the armor, so he may not recognize him then either, but Vader should have recognized Threepio. On the other hand, Threepio DID look like any hundreds of other protocol droids, so Vader's not gonna necessarily gonna spot the one he built 30 years ago.
As for your other points, you make some good ones. The Phantom Menace did do a good job of setting up the prequels, but Lucas did sort of drop the ball on the other two. Clones was killed by the horrid acting and unbelievable 'romance' between Anakin and Padme'. Revenge just had too much narrative to get through and not enough time to do it.
I'm gonna write a post about why the prequels didn't work for me in the near future. I hope you check it out and give me your feedback then too!
