It breaks the heart to see someone die so young.  As reported all over the internet, former "Growing Pains" star Andrew Koenig, son of Star Trek's Walter Koenig, was found deceased in Stanley Park in Vancouver, B.C.  Andrew was 41 years old.

During a news conference this afternoon, Walter told reporters that Andrew's death was the result of a suicide.  No details as to how Andrew took his own life were given at the time.

According to MSNBC, Walter also gave the following advice to those who are considering suicide and their families: "Koenig urged others who may have suicidal thoughts to seek help before making 'that final decision,' and encouraged families who might have vulnerable members to 'extend a hand' rather than ignoring or rationalizing the situation. Walter Koenig said his son stopped taking antidepressant medication about a year ago."

My heart goes out to the Koenig family and I want to echo the sentiments that Walter Koenig expressed: No matter how bad you think things are, there are people out there who care.  If you have someone in your life who struggles with depression, don't ignore it.  It's not something that you just 'get over.' They need you to be there and to help them battle their demons.

If you need help, there are resources.  There are always better solutions to the problem than the one you're considering.

(From a purely scientific standpoint, the Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy and matter are not lost, but merely change from one for to another.  By that rationale, the energy that forms the human soul would continue to exist in another form.  So is it really the 'end' you're looking for?  I don't think so.  Sorry to get so heady there, but y'know, I'm a nerd about this stuff.)

Suicide is no answer.  It leaves the ones you love filled with heartbreak and regret. Don't ever think that the life you lead is inconsequential.  That it doesn't matter. Believe me, it does.

So to everyone who loves or wishes to be loved, I say this: As members of the human race, the human family, we need to be there for each other in our darkest hours.  That is what makes us human, doesn't it?

"No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind." John Donne
