HAPPY LIFE DAY EVERYONE!

Okay, before any of my fellow Star Wars nerds call me out on this, I will acknowledge that 'Life Day', the Star Wars version of 'Festivus', is traditionally recognized on November 17th.

'Why is that?' ask the folks who may enjoy Star Wars but aren't as obsessive about it as the rest of us.  Because November 17th is the date when the Star Wars Holiday Special aired for its first - and only - time.

Why did it air only once?  Well, quite frankly, cuz it's bad.

And I mean baaaaaad.

Even those die-hard Star Wars fans who liked the prequels say its bad, which is saying something.  The story goes that George Lucas had minimal to no influence on the production.  The folks who wrote the story sure didn't seem to 'get' Star Wars and created a bizarre mash-up of b-movie sci-fi and variety shows.

I believe that it's because of how poorly this show came out that Lucas would become so controlling of all the following Star Wars ancillary products. It's a wonder that the Star Wars Robot Chicken and Family Guy specials even get made!

Watch video from the Star Wars Holiday Special after the jump!

Now, for those who've never seen the Star Wars Holiday Special because they weren't a) born yet or b) willing to shell out 20 bucks for a grainy bootleg copy, I give you the bad and the good - but mostly bad - of the show that George Lucas himself has said he wished he could 'track down every copy of and burn':

Carrie Fisher sings to the Star Wars Theme!

Bea Arthur does a dance number as she sings with the Cantina Aliens:

Here's the one cool thing about the Star Wars Holiday Special that makes it tolerable: an animated short produced by Canadian animation studio Nelvana (Rock and Rule) which features the first appearance of bad-ass bounty hunter Boba Fett!

Am I imagining things or are those Mon Calimari on the Alliance ship in the beginning?

See why Lucas hated this thing so much and will never allow it to be released on video legally?  Then again, it's not like bootleggers aren't making a buck off of it, why shouldn't he?  I think that, at the very least, they should release the Boba Fett cartoon in some form as it doesn't deserve to get buried like it's been.

Finally, as a gift to all my Geek To Me readers, here's an MP3 of the "Happy Life Day" song sung by Ms. Fisher.  (Use 'right-click' and 'save as' to download the file.)

Happy Holidays everyone!
