It's Gamer Tuesday again and the good folks of vVv Gaming have provided us with another insightful article on professional gaming. Today's topic, how to get started as a pro gamer!
Competitive Gaming, how do you get started? by vVv Enmity
Most Professional Gamers begin their gaming careers as a casual gamer, and somewhere along the line hear about competitive gaming. They'll become intrigued by the concept of competitive gaming and decide that they want to pursue it. Every casual gamer has the opportunity to become a Professional; it's getting started that's the hard part.

Getting Started as a Pro Gamer
When I was about 12 years old a friend told me about this game called Socom II: US Navy Seals for the PlayStation 2.
We were goofing around in an online match and talking trash to the
players on the opposite team. Their rebuttal to our trash talking was,
"You guys aren't even on the front page of GameBattles!" Our first
thought at the time was, "What is GameBattles?" Our interest was
definitely piqued. We asked them about it and they sent us over to the
website where we saw that there more than 200 teams playing Socom II.
We decided to test our skills because we figured the best of the best
could be found playing here. At that point, GameBattles' matches were
only 4v4, so now it was our job to find 2 more players. This was more
difficult than it may sound, but eventually we ended up playing with my
friend's brother and one of his friends.
With our team complete, we were ready for our first match. After the struggle to get our team together, and all our excitement and anticipation, we lost 0-5 in our first 5 matches. It was quite a wake-up call. As we continued playing together, spending more and more time as a team, we realized that having strategies going into the matches would give us a better chance at winning. Before the next match we designed and practiced strategies, and our hard work paid off when we emerged victorious! The hard road to victory had begun, and each new match brought a different hardship, with new strategies that had to be developed for the different play styles of different teams. We ended that "Winter Ladder" in 22nd place. Note -- we were on the first page. Our skills only increased, and in the next 6 ladders we participated in, we broke the top 10 every time.
After Socom III came out, some of our teammates lost interest in gaming, and my original partner and I were back to square one. We participated in some doubles ladders: requiring only two players on a team, but about 3 months later, my Socom III disk broke. We attempted to try our luck with Socom II again, but for obvious reasons Socom II wasn't as popular anymore, and we ended up not sticking with it for very long.
About a year later, my parents bought me an Xbox360. There weren't many games for the 360 at this point, and I decided to get Gears of War because it was one of the more popular games. This game, once again, had a competitive side of gaming, and I decided to check out the GameBattles website again. There were ladders for Gears of War, and I immediately started seeking out a team. Out of the five teams that I contacted, only one team responded. This team introduced me to an entire gaming organization called vVv Gaming. This was an entirely new concept, and two months after I applied I was accepted into vVv Gaming. A whole new world of gaming opened up for me based around tournaments! vVv introduced me to both online and LAN (local area network) tournaments. They gave me the chance to compete in the two big tournament organizations, The World Cyber Games and Major League Gaming. In my time with vVv Gaming I have played at both of these tournaments, and have earned recognition as a Professional gamer.
I look forward to many more opportunities, and sharing with people what it takes to be a Professional Gamer and what to expect at your first tournament. - vVv Enmity

Great job to enmity, or Nick as we here at vVv call him. I played with him on our first LAN tournament in Meadows of '08. Unfortunately, we didn't do well but Enmity individually did incredible. I've known him for a long time and this guy is incredible. Amazing sense of humor and a fellow geek. We've always been friends, and I hope I see him doing even bigger things in the realm of videogames. Good job enmity, I'm proud of you.

Wow... thanks for the intro into the world of professional gaming. I didn't realize that gamers changed up games -- I figured people just got really good at one game... but it sounds like gamers evolve onto harder or more popular games and try to beat them. very interesting!
