Wednesdays are hereby designated 'web comic day' so if you're a creator with a web-comic that you'd like to see featured here on the Geek To Me blog, just drop me a line with the url and description of your web-comic.
For the inaugural edition of 'Wednesday Web Comics' we talk to Eisner Award winning indie creator Becky Cloonan who tells us about her new Korean Hip-Hop web comic K.G.B.:
Geek To Me: So, you're kinda like the Ron Burgandy of comics in that folks may not know it, but you're kind of a big deal. Can you tell the noobs about yourself and what you've done?
Becky Cloonan: I'm probably best known for my work with Brian Wood on Demo and Steve Seagle on American Virgin. I've also worked with Tokyopop on my graphic novel East Coast Rising, and Dark Horse just put out a hardcover of Pixu, a collaboration of sorts with Fabio Moon, Vasilis Lolos and Gabriel Ba. I keep it real by self-publishing short stories. Currently I'm working with Brian on six new issues of Demo, a few short stories, and I'm gearing up to work with Gerard Way on The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, to be published by Dark Horse. Oh yeah, and webcomics: I syndicate a weekly webstrip on my blog called Comic Attack. And K.G.B.
Wednesday Web Comics - "K.G.B."
G2M: I once got to touch an Eisner Award, what's it like actually owning one? Do angelic choirs sing when you enter a room?
BC: Those things are really heavy! I enchanted mine with the element of fire so now it can toast bread, and I once used it to bludgeon an intruder to death. They come in handy.
G2M: Ok, back to the issue at hand. You have a new webcomic called KGB hitting the interwebs, tell us what it's about and where the idea came from.
BC: Yes! K.G.B. was an old idea Hwan and I had back in college- who knows what we were thinking at the time, we were probably all hopped up on pop tarts anyway. Time passed, and we forgot about the idea for 8 long years, until one fateful day last January she found the folders containing all our old notes and sketches on the subject. I guess all the inspiration just came rushing back to us, as we decided hey, this isn't bad!
G2M: You've known your collaborator Hwan Cho for some time. How did you meet?
BC: We were introduced in College, at the School of Visual Arts. She was a year ahead of me, and in a different major, but I ended up being friends with Melissa DeJesus- a friend of Hwan's from highschool- and in 1999 the three of us and two others decided to start a website together. We still maintain it up to this very day :) (that's dedication!)
G2M: What's the process involved with creating a page every week?
BC: We started drawing K.G.B. at the beginning of the summer, aiming to get 3 or 4 months ahead by the time it launched- so now that we are ahead, the goal is to stay ahead. There will be weeks where Hwan or I won't have time to work on it, so we gave ourselves a large buffer. If we miss a few weeks, it won't affect the updates.
G2M: What do you feel helps distinguish KGB from other web comics?
BC: Hwan and I both come from a world of print comics, so approaching the comic we are constantly thinking of print and not web. In that respect our approach is unique. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know shit about web comics! It is really a learning experience for me.
It's hard to look at the comic as it is, with only 2 pages up and think that the story is going anywhere- but in time the comic will come to stand on it's own, when more content is added- right now with so little content I think it's hard for readers to see the big picture of where we are going with the story. I just hope people stick with it, at least until our season finale of the first season in the spring!
G2M: So, are you really into Korean Rap/Hip-hop?
BC: I hesitate to admit this, but I had a 1TYM poster hanging in my apartment, oh so many years ago... Seriously though, because I was getting into a lot of Japanese music at the time, that making the leap to Korean music was pretty natural.
G2M: Last question: KGB vs (Scott Pilgrim's) Sex Bob-omb in a battle of the bands! Who wins?
BC: K.G.B. takes place in 1995, so if you want to get technical, they would never even meet!
G2M: LOL! Good answer.
