Girl says: hey geeks, do you know how to dress?

user-pic
Today we have a guest blogger who comes to us from the ranks of ComicsWaitingRoom.com, Marissa Meli.  Marissa is a self-proclaimed 'girl geek' who has colorful opinions on all things nerdy.  I asked her if she'd like to give us guys some fashion tips, and she was happy to oblige:

The Art of the Geek T-Shirt - Marissa Meli

Fashion means wearing your heart on your shoulder. We dress how we want to be perceived, even if that means being perceived as someone who doesn't care about their appearance.  If your closet is full of licensed video game apparel and elaborate cosplay outfits, congratulations: you're a geek and you're proud. There's a right way and a wrong way to do geek fashion, though, and as a lifelong 'fashionista' I'm here to set you right. Guys, get ready to beef up your geeky tees.

user-pic
Okay guys, it really comes as no surprise that some male geeks and nerds have a hard time relating to the opposite sex.  Heck, that goofy show BIG BANG THEORY makes that a running gag every week!

And with this in mind, I Twittered a question to all my female friends "What do fanboys do that really turn you off?"  And WOW...did I get a response!  So here are the Top Ten responses that I received.  (Twitter alias' have been removed to prevent flaming.) Take notes fellas:

Becoming a Pro Gamer: Team Training

user-pic
It's Gamer Tuesday and you know what that means...another in-depth article on becoming a superior gamer from the folks at vVv GamingLast week we were given some very sound advice on finding the right team for co-op play.  Today, we learn about what your team can do to improve collective game play:

Team Training by Jordan "Doomhammer" Kahn and Jerry "LordJerith" Prochazka.

In order for players to improve together as a team, they must train together effectively. Players often talk about skill and chemistry. Chemistry is not just about getting along and having some laughs. Chemistry is also about training together effectively to achieve common team goals.

What is Training?

Training is a simulated version of an actual competition. During competitions, you want to be supportive of your teammates; however, when you're training, you must be critical of your teammates and the team's performance. The purpose of training is to identify what works and what does not work, to figure out the best possible strategies and to identify the correct tactic or tactics for a given situation. In training, the intent is not to win, but to learn and improve.

TNA Wrestling's Jay Lethal: Geek or Nerd? [VIDEO]

user-pic
Last year I spoke with several of the stars of TNA Wrestling when they came to Chicago for their 'Bound For Glory' pay-per-view.  Last week, they returned for a house show at the Odeum Sports & Expo Center in Villa Park where I was able to revisit with a few familiar faces and meet a couple new ones.  In this video, I meet with the tag team of 'Lethal Consequences', Jay "Black Machismo" Lethal and Consequences Creed.  (I met Creed last year at the TNA Fan Interactive event.)  These guys are a really entertaining duo, both in and out of the ring, and this interview shows what total geeks they are:

Comic Book Review: CHEW #5 [VIDEO]

user-pic
One of my favorite indie comics is CHEW by John Layman and Rob Guillory, published by Image Comics.  It tells the story of Tony Chu, a 'cibopath', a person with the power to tell everything that has happened to a living creature if he eats a part of it.  The book is dark, quirky, funny and wholly original.  In this episode of CCW*TV, my comic-reviewing partner Jose Melendez and I take a look at CHEW #5.  We love the book, but Jose takes issue with a certain spoiler-laden image on the very cover of the book! (WARNING: Explicit language!):

Have YOU read Chew? If so, what did you think?

I Wanna Be Wonder Woman!

user-pic
The character of Wonder Woman is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic figures in comics.  She's the embodiment of female strength and will.  And yet, Megan Fox has called her 'lame.'  Brian Bendis (writer of Marvel Comics' Spider Woman) has called her 'a walking STD farm.'  And Joss Whedon dropped out of producing a feature film that would bring her to the silver screen.

On the other hand, the number of little girls who will want to dress like the "Amazing Amazon" this Halloween will be countless.  And there is one young lady who not only wants to dress like Wonder Woman, she wants to be Wonder Woman!

In the proposed feature film that is...

Webcomic Wednesday: Draw The Dog

user-pic
This week's webcomic comes to us courtesy of a former Disney animator!  His name is Jim George and he is the creator of DrawTheDog.com, a webstrip where people can submit a photo of their own dog and have it serve as inspiration for a story!

DTD_No_Bath.jpg

Bruce Kasanoff, co-founder of DrawtheDog.com, got in touch to tell me a bit about the site.  Both he and Jim talk about where the idea came from and what they love most about it:

Geek To Me: Where did the idea for Draw The Dog come from?

Jim George: Bruce and I were working on a book project that involves elaborate full color illustrations of dogs, which means each illustration takes me about two weeks to complete. One morning, I woke up with pretty much the whole idea of Draw the Dog: the name, the style of black and white cartoons, and the way each cartoon reveals itself on the site. Now I draw one cartoon a day!

G2M:
Jim draws the cartoons, so what about you Bruce?  What's your contribution?

Bruce Kasanoff: My main contribution to the site was the idea that almost every cartoon would be inspired by a real dog, and that owners could submit stories through the site. This creates a much closer bond between Jim and the people who visit our site.

G2M: What kind of feedback have you been getting?  Good?  Bad?

Jim: We get instant, generally incredibly positive feedback from the site, and that gives me all sorts of energy.

G2M: Finally, why do this sort of thing?

Bruce: We do it because we love doing it.

Check out DrawTheDog.com for yourself and see what a delightful webcomic it is!  And if you submit your dog to the site, make sure you tell them you heard about it on Geek to Me!

Gamer Tuesday: Finding a Team

user-pic
Last week on Gamer Tuesday, we had an article by vVv Enmity explaining how he broke into the ranks of pro-gamers.  And, if you've read the previous weeks' installments, you'd know that we've also had articles on Rhythm Gaming, Competition, and what differences there are between pro gamers and amateurs.   Today, the good folks of vVv Gaming have given us an in-depth look at how you find the right combination of players to team up with and make a formidable gaming squad:

Finding the Right Team, by
Jordan "Doomhammer" Kahn and Jerry "LordJerith" Prochazka.

How do you know if you're on an effective team that's right for you?

How do you know what to look for in a team, or how to be effective on a team once you find the right one? In the last article, Warrior vs. Soldier, we defined and discussed the differences between the concepts of warriors versus soldiers. Everyone starts as a warrior. It takes training to become a soldier. This series of articles will hopefully help players understand the training process that teams need to undertake in order to transform warrior players into soldier players.

Jeff Balke Appearing @ Graham Crackers

user-pic
No, he's not a gorgeous red head like Red Hot Annie, but Jeff Balke is a friend of Geek To Me, so I thought I pass on word of his appearance at Graham Cracker Comics this Wednesday:

GrahamCrackerSigning.jpg

So while he may not do a dance number like the ladies of Vaudezilla, he is a talented artist and will make your comic book covers look mighty cool!  When you stop by, be sure to tell him that you heard about his appearance here on Geek To Me!

Galaxies Colliding! Galaxies Colliding! (And Felicia Day)

user-pic
The science nerds of the Spitzer Science Center created this funny and educational video to inform us about the impending 'collision' between the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxies.  Sounds like the kinda stuff Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich would make a movie about, huh?  Well, as explained by the lovely and talented Felicia Day, it's really not a big deal:

So my question is this: where were all these brainy but gorgeous redheaded teachers when I was taking this in school?
