Carothers pleads guilty - like father, like son

The primaries are tomorrow and you will get your chance to vote for your favorite candidates. But try to make sure they aren't corrupt.

Ald. Isaac "Ike" Carothers pleads guilty today to federal corruption charges according to the Chicago Tribune. The Carothers' deal would sentence the fallen alderman to 28 months in prison with fines of $250k. Why would an alderman who gets paid $110K / year feel the need to accept kickbacks for favors? Tell me why Ald. Carothers will not be your candidate of choice in the future.

He admitted to accepting $40K in home improvements - Bob Villa, Tim Allen, This Old House, and Tool Time - did afford him renovations to his crib, but was it worth the quarter of million dollar fine and 2 years 4 months in prison? Tribune reporters, Jeff Coen, Todd Lighty, and Bill Kissinger wrote that , "Carothers joins a long list of crooked aldermen who have helped solidify Chicago's reputation for political corruption." The saga continues.

Carothers admits to one count of failing to report home improvements on his income taxes, and accepting items of value for supporting a zoning change.

He basically gets off, Isaac Free, avoiding a 13-month sentence. Sometimes it pays to plea-out, because prosecutors may drop wire fraud and mail fraud charges.

Twenty eight aldermen have been found guilty of wrongdoing since 1972. Is there something in the water?

Carothers' father was also convicted and sentenced to 3 years in prison for nearly the same offense - like water for chocolate - like father, like son.

So the question tonight is, why would you accept bribes if you're already making $110k per year?

"Catcher in the Rye" author has passed away

When I taught high school English, many moons ago, I had the great pleasure of introducing "Catcher in the Rye" to my students. J.D. Salinger's work made it easy to get teenagers to read. The story and main character helped. Holden Caulfield's rebellious nature captures the hearts of young people and Salinger's look into the protagonist is still an accurate depiction of teen angst and fabricated bravado.

I will miss J.D. Salinger - the man - but his works will live forever.

iPad is born

The question is....what will you use an iPad for? Currently, I will keep my iPhone and old G4 laptop and desktop CPUs. They do my dirty work for me all day and night. After 4 overhauls of my older Apple products, I am still satisfied with the Cupertino products. My iPhone has become my new computer...besides MS Word, I use the iPhone for everything.

So what about the iPad: 140,000 Apps, web, email, photos, and video...e-reading, and then the virtual elimination of paper. I will buy one when the price dips and when my G4 conks out. I love it, but I will wait until the price drops and the Apps increase 3-fold.

Should cops Taser kids in school?

Should cops Taser students? A law suit alleges that Officer Lonnie Netzel "only used his taser gun upon African American students at Kankakee Junior High School...and that race plays a role in the actions from which this case arises."

Attorney James Rowe said that "shocking two 12-year-olds with a taser gun for no reason is reprehensible and criminal."

But what if the teenagers are unruly? Netzel is a specialist in gang resistance education and he is a training officer in middle schools. Alta Young and Stella Bender allege that their children were stun gunned by the officer and that their color had a great deal to do with the targeting.

Should a child ever be tased on the finger if unruly? Call me at 877-358-CLTV (2588).

Teddy Pendergrass - Love TKO (1950-2010)

If you ever had the privilege of going to a Teddy Pendergrass concert, it was like a sexual experience. Men wanted to be Teddy; women wanted to be with Teddy. He was masculine, strong, tenor and baritone at the same time. He was the Teddy Bear, all wrapped up into an amazing singer, song stylist, and showman. Teddy Pendergrass (Theodore DeReese), dead at age 59. With such hits as "Turn Out the Lights," "Close the Door," "When Somebody Loves You Back," and "My Latest, My Greatest, Inspiration"...we will never forget about that soulful classics that this incredible artist gave the world. He carried on the torch of the great Philadelphia sound. I will miss Teddy. Check out TheGrio.

Candles on the concert stage would be lit, one-by-one, and while singing his song "Turn Out the Lights," he would stroll to the candles and blow them out...the master of seduction. His shirt would come off, women longed and lunged to touch his sweaty, hairy chest and beard, and the ladies' screams would blow out your ear drums. Teddy was special. Teddy was magical. Teddy was the epitome of soul music. Get the album, "Teddy" and "Live! Coast to Coast," You will feel the TP experience. My brother, Theodore, who is also a singer, has the same birthday as Pendergrass - March 26. A special day indeed.

So today we close the door, we turn out he lights to our latest, our greatest inspiration, Mr. Teddy Pendergrass. Turn 'em off!

Haiti needs help

I was heartbroken seeing the pictures from the destruction taking place in Haiti. This earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 plus aftershocks, devastated Port-Au -Prince with hundreds and maybe thousands injured and killed. It is our responsibility to assist Haiti in its effort to ease the pain. See Marvinady on Twitter.

So I ask...what will you do? Call 1-800-REDCROSS.

I am headed to the American Red Cross to make a donation, I will be purchasing water, and giving all that I can to assist the Haitians. This is a humanitarian mission that we can all contribute to, and pitching in just a little bit goes a long way. Imagine if your homes, clinics, stores, and schools were destroyed in a matter of minutes. We would want help too.

We may have dropped the ball on New Orleans, but let's make up for it in our neighbors in Haiti.

Light-skinned with no Negro dialect - Perfectly Black

Skin lightener and articulation. It's hard to be "perfectly black" and the only way to do this is to stay out of trouble, go to Harvard Law, become a U.S. Senator, and President of the United States.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the book, "Game Change" exposes Harry Reid's off-color remarks about Obama's ability to become elected President. Written by Time Magazine's Mark Halperin and New York magazine's John Heilemann, the book reports that Reid "believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama - a 'light-skinned' African American with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,' as he later put it privately."

Many of you are frowning on Senator Reid's remarks, but you know he was kinda right...a darker candidate doesn't get elected...a candidate who doesn't speak well, doesn't get elected. Poor race relations and peculiar remarks are "stupid, stupid, studid" as former Ilinois gov - Rod Blagojevich would say. But Harry Reid's words were hauntingly true. We still have hang-ups concerning race, and to think that the U.S. would have elected anyone other than Barack...is nonsense.

Light skin and excellent diction still wins, when you need it to work in your favor. It's time to get Ax or Ask? The African American Guide to Better English and a little bottle of skin lightening lotion.
