Parent keeps child at home for safety

Leatrice Jackson was fed up. She decided to keep her child home from Fenger High School because she had fears of Tywon, her son, being harmed. Can you blame her?

The Chicago Tribune ran a front page story on Tywon not going to school for three weeks. He was sprawled across his bed, chillin', with no homework in sight.

But if homeschool, charter, magnet, or other public school options weren't available, what else could poor little Tywon do? Fire up the Palystation bruh.

To be fair, his mother tried endlessly to get her child into other schools, but she is quoted as saying, "When you say you are coming from Fenger; they don't want you. You're automatically labeled."

Let the labeling begin as Tywon bounces into Corliss High School. I hope that he can regain the three weeks lost in class time, because a mind is truly a terrible thing to waste.

Shameful that a parent has to choose between their child being educated or alive! Mayor Daley pressed really hard to get the Olympics for Chicago unsuccessfully but now is his lack of attention on violence for the West and South Side an indication that the Olympic committee knew what they were doing?

Hopefully this mother will find a safe way for her son to get an education and shame on the politicians of Chicago that seek re-election whose wards are so crime ridden and violence infested.

This is ridiculous that a parent would rather have their child at home, LOSING what they already know, rather than in school learning. Darrion Albert was a tragic circumstance. I truly hope nothing like that happens again. But in this child's lifetime how many times has this happened? How likely is it that it would happen again? HAS it happened again? No. He needs to take himself to school, and this "parent" should be investigated by DCFS. Had she been an involved parent prior to this tradegy, she would have seen the shape Fenger was in and followed proper channels to get her child out. There is a process. You can't just up and say, "I don't want my child here." and BOOM he's transferred to the school of his choice. No the school system doesn't work that way. And unfortunately, her child is not prioriety. We're not making and breaking rules for any student.

This law suit is just people with their hands out wanting to capitalize off of a tradgedy. That "gimme gimme" attitude is at the root of this problem.

It is illegal to keep your child out of school and not provide an alternative, I think a call to DCFS is in order.

It's easy for you to make a statement that has nothing to do with your child being placed in harm ways. For one, the lawsuit is not about money, its about the safety of the students from Altgeld who have to fight their way to and from school. If this was your child and he/she informed you that they are being beaten everyday and the security watched and supported the beating from another child they support, what will you do for your child? You will be walking the same walk as we are doing for the protection of our children. We are not asking for money as a result of the lawsuit like everyone else who are running around and collecting money! We want our school back as our neighborhood school instead sending our kids in area where they can be killed. What you people don't understand that the Roseland kids want a death of an Altgeld Gardens kid, bottom line. We as parents from Altgeld are doing all what we can to prevent this from happening. If we had not been doing what we have been doing these past weeks another death would had happen. Trust me on this this! So until you walk this walk and see what we see than your comment is so incorrect! Also, I have been in my children education and I have been volunteering for the past twenty years and I can not get an application from fenger to volunteer where my children are going like they are hiding something that they don't want me to witnessed. By the way, can you beat my volunteering efforts with my children education, I sure you can't!
