For decades, video gaming has remained primarily a boys' club where female game characters like the impossibly proportioned Lara Croft from Tomb Raider or paid models at conventions dubbed "booth babes" are used to hold the attention of the distinctly dude demographic.

But with females now making up 40 percent of all video game players, according to a 2010 survey by the Entertainment Software Association, it's gamers girls themselves who seem to be grabbing most of the eyeballs - both in pop culture and on the local scene.

February has been declared Gamer Girl month by EvilControllers.com, and now here we at GameSmith will also proclaim the same. Keep your eyes peeled in this spot for interviews and features on all things gamer girl. Also, there is a gamer girl cover story scheduled to print in the RedEye next week.
