Records are meant to be broken, and when Chicago's newly reopened Logan Hardware set its sights on gaming's most coveted high score, they knew who to contact: Steve Wiebe. The store hired Wiebe, who has twice himself held the Donkey Kong world record, to make three more attempts at the record on January 15.
Steve Wiebe Attempts to Break Donkey Kong Record at Chicago's Logan Hardware
His first attempt ended disappointingly after three hours with a score of only 872,600 points. He tried again a few hours later, only to fall short again at a measly 300,000. Looking exhausted, he was no match for a third attempt.
Fans of Wiebe, who was the underdog hero of 2007's The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, were not disappointed, however, as Weibe offered several classes for Donkey Kong amateurs. Wiebe also fielded questions during several Q&A sessions, where curious fans inquired into Wiebe's thoughts about all things Donkey Kong and Wiebe's rival, Billy Mitchell.
The current record stands at 1,068,000, set by Hank Chien, a plastic surgeon who has made quite a few headlines himself. He, too, has previously held the world record, but only briefly. Chien is now enjoying a small film made about his most recent record-setting attempt, entitled Doctor Kong. Wiebe, Mitchell, and Chien all plan to appear in New Jersey in march for a "Kong-off," which will be the kind of scoring competition Donkey Kong fanatics have been dreaming about.
