Redbox To Start Renting Video Games in Chicago

Will people actually buy a video game again? We'll know soon.

This week Redbox has begun expanding renting video games at many of their DVD rental kiosks in Chicago.

PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS games are included (no PSP games?) in the inventory, which is relatively small. It's comprised mostly of recent, top-selling releases, just like Redbox's movie selections. I scanned Redbox's website and found games like Medal of Honor, Spider Man: Shattered Dimensions, NBA Jam, Metroid: Other M and Mafia II.

Each rental costs $2 per day -- twice as much as a DVD movie and $0.50 more than a Blu-ray flick. It works just like the DVD and Blu-ray rentals apart from the price. You visit a kiosk, take your disc and return it whenever you're done.

I did a search for games in the 60657 zipcode in Chicago and it turned up about 35-40ish Redbox kiosks in the area, which is quite a lot. I'm not sure if all of these kiosks in Chicago actually rent games or not.

It'll be interesting to see how this will effect the sale of new games at GameStop and Best Buy and the like. Some people might be more willing to spend $14 beating a game in a week over spending $60 on a new copy.

On the other hand, companies like EA have tried to combat the used game market by making you input a code with a new copy of their games to open up multiplayer functionality and DLC. We shall see.
