Reviews In Retrospect - GameSmith Plays Dead Rising 2, New Guitar Hero

Dead Rising 2
Xbox 360, PS3 ($59.99)
Rated M For Mature

Like last year's undead-heavy "Zombieland" movie - "Dead Rising 2" is more spoofy-comedy than a straight jump-out-of-your-seat horror game. Sure, there's buckets of blood and gore oozing out of every pore of the game, but it's hard to take your character's plight too seriously when he's dressed in a waitress outfit or bikini and tossing a bowling ball to knock down hapless zombies like pins. If you can look past the game's slightly frustrating save system and perfunctory story - "Dead Rising 2" is a ridiculously fun way to spend a zombie apocalypse.

Score: 8 out of 10

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
($59.99) PC, PS3, Wii
Rated T for Teen

The music game genre is starting to grow a bit stale, but Activision tries to liven things up in its new Guitar Hero by attaching an outlandish plot to it (narrated by Gene Simmons) involving defeating a giant beast with your axe of rock. But who cares about the story? The main attraction, of course, is the more hard rockin' soundtrack which jettisons some of the more pop friendly track selection of "Band Hero" and "Guitar Hero 5" for more finger blistering metal like Black Sabbath, Anthrax, and Dragonforce. And yes, prog metal nerds, there's the entire Rush album "2112" as well.

Score 7 out of 10

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf '11 W/ Sony "Move"
($59.99) PS3
Rated E for Everyone

Tiger Woods' latest video game feels like a brand new experience when paired with Sony's new "Move" motion control system. Instead of pressing buttons and jiggling a control stick, you use the Move's wand to swing like a golf club. It theory it sounds a lot like "Wii Sports" golf, but Sony's Move detects depth and speed and makes this kind of virtual golf about 10 times more accurate and realistic. Now that the weather is cooling, "Tiger Woods" might be the best way to keep your game in shape over the winter.

Score 8 out of 10
