OfficeMax MaxPerks: Do You Use It? My First Experience Leaves Me Perplexed

This week I applied for an OfficeMax MaxPerks card for the first time and drove into Chicago to get some free paper. While the shopping experience was painless -- the free paper, Sharpies and Scotch Pop-Up Tape I selected were clearly marked -- I'm a bit perplexed by the MaxPerks system.

I knew I was going to have to wait until the end of the quarter to get the rewards, but I expected some notation on my receipt to say that I had just earned them. But there was nothing. When I got home and logged into my new MaxPerks account, I also saw nothing.

For those who use MaxPerks, is this normal? Do you wait until the end of the quarter to find out if you even earned anything? I can't imagine going back to the store months later and returning stuff because they failed to generate the expected rewards.

I guess that's a big advantage to the company.

I buy my ink there, & always get my checks ok. It is a weird reward system though. Thanks for this post! I needed computer paper, so free is good!

Wait, you get a check? I thought it was like credits on your MaxPerks card?

I had a similar experience the first time I used Staples' rewards system. It was last December, when you could buy a bazillion batteries and get 100% back through their program. Bought 'em and had no indication of how or when I would get my $$ back. It finally arrived a few months later (at the end of the quarter, apparently) in the form of a "Rewards Check," which is just like a gift certificate for Staples. Perhaps Office Max is similar?
