Random Sports Thoughts for you to Ponder!

Fred Huebner

Much more than a sports guy, a big fan of tv, movies and music, (classic rock). TV play-by-play man for the Chicago Fire. Between Sports Phone and The Score, I have covered and talked sports for 32 years in this town.

My head is pounding with far too many things rolling through it, I had to dump them out somewhere!

  • The Chicago Bears have started 3-0 just 4 times now in the last 21 seasons.  They went to the post season in '90, '91 & '06, and hope to do it again this year.
  • It DEFINITELY is better to be lucky than good!
  • Bears fans will say they played better than the Packers and deserved the win.  Keep believing that.
  • The only stats the Bears led in Monday night were most takeaways, third down efficiency, and, believe it or not, rushing yards!
  • I usually use the phrase, "He outkicked his coverage", when discussing a guy with an extremely hot wife or girlfriend, but last night, that is exactly what the Green Bay punter did on Devin Hester's 62 yard return for a touchdown.
  • Despite everything you have been reading about Julius Ppeppers, last night was the first game this season he came to play.  He was a force all night, forcing the Packers to hold him continually and his blocked field goal was awesome.  I am still waiting for him, or anyone on that front line to get constant pressure on the QB. Another game without a sack!
  • Brian Urlacher is playing the best football of his career!
  • His sidekick, Lance Briggs, is as well.
  • The Bears coaching staff is making the right move with Tommie Harris, who hasn't done a thing all year, but sitting Devin Aromashodu still has me scratching my head.
It's not just the Bears that are on my mind:
  • Ozzie Guillen announced yesterday he would be back as Sox manager next season, as if there was ever a doubt.
  • Can the Sox please move Mark Teahan and Carlos Quentin during the off-season?
  • I can hear it opening day starting pitcher for the 2011 Chicago Cubs is Carlos Zambrano!
  • I know everyone fell in love with the Blackhawks during their Stanley Cup run, but pre-season hockey should NOT be televised.  It may be even worse than pre-season NFL games.  Nothing is worse than spring training baseball!
  • It was great to hear Derrick Rose ask, "Why can't I be the league MVP?"
  • The Northwestern Wildcats are 4-0, and now the Big Ten schedule begins.  I see their third straight bowl appearance this season.
  • What happened to the Chicago Fire?  Soccer is a different game.  You can't just add players during the season and expect they will gel on the pitch.  Now if Nery Castillo, Freddie Ljungberg, Bratislav Ristic are all back for training camp next season, the Fire should have a much better squad for the 2011 campaign.
Whew!  My brain feels much better!
