That's Why We Love The Game!!!

Fred Huebner

Much more than a sports guy, a big fan of tv, movies and music, (classic rock). TV play-by-play man for the Chicago Fire. Between Sports Phone and The Score, I have covered and talked sports for 32 years in this town.

For years, I have heard people talk about how dull and boring soccer is.

I hope those people had a chance to see the USA-Algeria this morning!  Bob Bradley's guys swarmed the attacking zone throughout the match, and FINALLY were able to put one into the rather large net to advance to the Round of 16 in the 2010 World Cup.

Landon Donovan has gone through the ringer as a member of the US National squad.  People have known for years that he has had the talent, but it rarely showed itself on the biggest stage.

It has in South Africa!
Donovan was tremendous in the USA's game versus Slovenia, and his fine play continued today.  His runs with the ball, his crosses into the penalty area, have been a key factor in the US advancing in this showcase of the greatest countries in the world playing the "Beautiful game".

The Red, White and Blue were robbed again after on offside was called in the first half negating a goal by Clint Dempsey.  Forget conspiracy theories, sometimes officials just make wrong calls, but it has gotten very irritating during this World Cup.

The attack of Altidore, Dempsey, Gomez, Buddle and Donovan never stopped, constantly pressuring the Algeria goal.  Bradley and Feilhaber played the ball well in the midfield, while Cherundulo, DeMerit and Bocanegra did a respectable job in the back, doing just enough to keep the opposition off the board.

Tim Howard guided his backliners, and his throw out of the penalty area in stoppage time to Donovan led to the game winning goal.  Other countries have good goal keepers...the USA have a GREAT one!

Next up...Serbia or Germany or Ghana...we will have to wait and see, but wear the colors proudly, the USA has advanced in the World Cup!!!

Funny how the link shown on the Chicago Tribune's website was "Are you interested now", particularly since all the attention it got was a small byline on the sports page that I had to scroll down to find. There was no mention on Page 1 of the online site. Meanwhile there is extensive coverage of the BlackHawks, Cubs & Sox.

I have watched coverage on ESPN when it showed Taste of Chicago type crowds in other countries cheering their teams on in the street. Businesses in England were basically shut down so that they could watch their team.

I've BEEN interested in soccer for many years. Unfortunately, I think we could win the world cup and still not get front page coverage. I'm really disgusted with the lack of our nation's support for our team.
