Driving down the expressway Sunday morning after meeting up with my high school buddies, I heard the report about the passing of Gaines Adams. Talk about a shocker!
Adams, a fourth pick in the 2007 NFL draft by Tampa Bay, had been acquired by the Bears during the season to try and help out with pressure on the defensive line. Adams, out of Clemson, had been a bust since coming into the league. The Bucs sent Adams to the Bears for a second round pick. He made just five tackles in his games with the Bears, including two tackles and a forced fumble in the finally against Detroit.
The initial coroner's report indicated Adams had an enlarged heart and died of cardiac arrest. I am likely naive, but you wonder with the numerous physicals given to athletes in high school and college, even before they get to the pros, why things like this are not discovered.
Adams, NFL, Cubs, 24 and more!!!
Gaines Adams
Reports enlarged heart led to cardiac arrest
Friends of Adams say he was looking for a fresh start with the Bears. I'm sorry. When you are the fourth pick in the draft, get the big signing bonus and nice contract, you are expected to deliver on your potential. Adams never had. If he had shown more with the Bears, he no doubt, would have been in the lineup more for a team that needs all the help they can get chasing the quarterback.
It is sad that a 26 year old has left this world far too early.
The Saints, Vikings, and Colts had no problems moving onto Championship Sunday, (and actually made most of the games quite boring), but the same couldn't be said for the Chargers. Maybe the big, goofy looking, head coach of the Jets was right. NY forced enough turnovers and stayed with their running games, and will face the Colts in the AFC title game.
New Orleans and Minnesota showed what an attacking defense can do to shut down the opponents passing attack. Kurt Warner and Tony Romo were running for their lives, and as a result, those two teams will be watching next week. It will be fun to see which offensive line can keep their quarterback upright next week in the NFL Championship game. It looks to me that, despite being in New Orleans, the Vikings are headed to the Super Bowl!
Cubbie blue was running rampant this weekend as the Cubs Convention was held downtown. My question is, why is nearly everyone in the media saying this Cubs team won't be in the mix this season?
Getting rid of Milton Bradley will be a big plus for the Cubs, and I can't believe that Soriano and Soto can play any worse than they did last year. Sure, Ted Lilly won't be ready to go when the season starts, but that is when Dempster and Zambrano are going to need to step up and show what they have.
I expect the North Siders to turn some heads and be there down the stretch in the N.L. Central.

One more thing...I know Soto is a favorite of the media, but why no talk of his forty pound weight loss and the possibility of coming off steroids? Soto was not even on the Cubs radar a few years ago, then all of a sudden, he is putting up big numbers, making the big club, and winning rookie of the year. Then, an injury. Huh, don't steroid guys usually end up getting injuries, here and there? Just wondering!
On the South Side, Bobby Jenks and Carlos Quentin inked one year deals avoiding salary arbitration. Jenks, whose fast ball isn't as fast, and who no longer strikes fear into the opponent, or confidence in many fans, needs to step it up this season. The same for Quentin. Sox fans could not wait for his return, but he needs to get back to the form that made him a hero at U.S. Cellular.
Jack Bauer is back! The damn terrorists apparently won't let the poor guy retire. The two hour season premiere Sunday night grabbed me right from the star, as it usually does. Chloe is back, despite not understanding some of the new fangled computer programs. There are already three or four different plots you can see popping up in the hours to come. I can't wait!
How about those Blackhawks! They start their road trip with a come from behind win in Columbus on Saturday, thanks to a two goal third period from Jonathan Toews, and then Patrick Sharp scores the game winner in the shootout to beat the Red Wings Sunday. Keep it up guys!

Fred, Soto lost all that weight because he was busted for smoking green at the World Baseball Classic. He stopped smoking and lost a lot of weight because when you smoke up you get hungry for the "munchies" (i read it in a magazine)
