Many Bears Should Be Embarassed By Win over Vikings!

Much more than a sports guy, a big fan of tv, movies and music, (classic rock). TV play-by-play man for the Chicago Fire. Between Sports Phone and The Score, I have covered and talked sports for 32 years in this town.

I hope that there were many Bears players that were embarassed when they took off their jerseys and looked at themselves in the mirror after their overtime win over the Vikings.

You say, "WHAT!".  I am telling you that the Bears team that beat Brett Favre and Minnesota at Soldier Field Monday night, is the same Bears team that failed to play up to their capabilities over the last two months.

Let's take a look at the guys that did the job on Monday, that have not been doing it most of the season:

Tommy Harris - The Bears tackle came to play making big plays from the start.  Where has this Tommie Harris been.  This is why the Bears gave him the big deal, and he finally stepped up and played the way he is expected.

Jay Cutler - The QB made things happen all night, rolling out of the pocket when necessary to make big plays.  The protection on the offensive line was superb against a good Vikings front line.  Cutler still tried to force the ball in a few times, but you can't argue with a four touchdown night, including the game winner to Devin Aromashodu.

Mark Anderson
- Where've ya been!  Number 97 was in the backfield all night long chasing Brett Favre.  This was the best we have seen the big guy since his rookie year.

Hunter Hillenmeyer - Granted Hunter has been asked to do more this season with the loss of Brian Urlacher, but what you saw Monday night was the way we had hoped Hillenmeyer would play.  His knocking the ball loose from Adrian Peterson in overtime gave the Bears the victory.

Now there are Bears that should have walked out of Soldier Field with their heads held high.

Israel Idonije - Everytime this guy gets time on the defensive line he makes things happen.  He forced a Favre fumble in the first half, just by chasing the old timer.  Favre dropped the ball before Izzy has a chance to get in his licks.  Idonije's block of an extra point turned out to be one of the biggest plays of the game.

Devin Aromashodu - People will soon learn to pronounce his name.  It will roll off the tongue as he made seven grabs for 150 yards including the game winning touchdown.  Cutler has said all season that he wanted this guy in the lineup, and it took Devin Hester's injury to finally get him on the field.

Rod Marinelli - We had heard all pre-season that the defensive line was going to be so much better this year because of the addition of Marinelli as assistant head coach and d line coach.  Maybe he has been teaching these guys the right thing and they just haven't been performing.  I loved how many guys contributed on the defensive line.  Idonije was asked after the game what the difference was on the field and he said they just made plays.

I know that it is not nice to beat a man when he is down, but even before Tillman went down with an apparent rib injury, he was terrible.  Tillman could not stop any receiver that lined up across from him and his senseless penalty in the end zone set up one of the Vikings scores.  The worse thing about his injury was that Nate Vasher then had to come in.

Johnny Knox went down with an ankle injury and here is to hoping he'll be okay.  Knox, along with Bennett, (who also caught a TD), and Aromashodu, can be a nice receiving corp.  Please leave Hester out.  And the way that Manning can return kicks, I see no reason for #23 to be back with the Bears at all next season.

The victory doesn't change what has happen to the team this year.  6-9 is not the record they were hoping for entering the last week of the season.  What took Lovie so long to get Aromashodu into the lineup?  Why didn't Lovie pull Orlando Pace out BEFORE he was hurt, when everyone could see he couldn't block anyone?  Your comments are welcome.

They wrap up the season in Detroit next Sunday, and then the fun should begin.
