As you can see, he's got plenty of his own ink - the first of which was done when he was 18 and is a hieroglyphics symbol based on some rappers from Oakland. HARD CORE! His favorite though, is the gorilla on his neck.
Featured Artist: Matt from Chicago Tattoo
Matt is a high-energy tattoo artist who has been working at Chicago Tattoo for the last five and a half years. He had just finished taking care of a customer when he washed his station and made room for me to sit down and ask questions.
Of course, the obvious thing for me to do was ask, "Why a gorilla on your neck? Does it represent a part of you?" The answer? "Nope, I just thought it would be cool to have a gorilla on my neck." You know what? I would never do it myself, but it totally looks good on Matt. I also appreciate how well manicured his fingernails are (I pay attention to these things).
Matt has had work done by almost every person in the shop, which I think is good to know since you want to make sure you're in a place where the artists all trust each other to do a good job.
If you're looking for a great guy to do American Traditional or lettering (his favorites) Matt is an excellent choice. Before meeting him, I had seen a bunch of his stuff posted to the Chicago Tattoo twitter account and was really impressed. Check out some of his most recent work:
