Another Blow For Hawkeyes In Injury Department: Richardson and Robinson Out

In today's media teleconference, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed what most already knew or suspected after the latest Hawkeye depth chart was released: his undefeated team will have to start getting used to life without offensive lineman Dace Richardson and running back Adam Robinson.

The Hawkeyes have suffered through more than their fair share of adversity this year, including losing projected tailback starter Jewel Hampton to a knee injury, missing standout lineman Bryan Bulaga for three games due to a thyroid issue, and playing without receiving weapons Derrell Johnson-Koulianos and Tony Moeaki earlier because of injuries.

The news about Richardson and Robinson, who are both expected to miss the rest of the season, makes Iowa's chase for a possible national title a little more difficult.  However, Ferentz and company have overcome every challenge so far this year, most notably the injuries and a horrendous road schedule (with wins at Penn State, at Wisconsin, at Michigan State), so let's not count the Hawks out in the title conversation just yet.

Iowa is averaging 123 rushing yards a game, so with the loss of both a lineman and running back this week, look for quarterback Ricky Stanzi to get some more opportunities to wing the ball around the field as the season progresses.

The schedule features a pair of winnable games against Indiana and Northwestern before the huge showdown in Columbus against the four-time defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes, so Ferentz will have some time to figure out how to best use new starting running back, Brandon Wegher prior to the matchup that could decide this year's Big Ten champion.

It won't be easy for Iowa to finish the season undefeated.

But it hasn't really been easy to this point either.

Big Ten Football: Week 2 Early Games - Handing Out Gold Stars and Throwing Tomatoes

For those not familiar with my work in the past, it's common occurrence to throw a tomato when dissatisfied with a play or performance (on or off the field) - all in all, a playful way to show that a performance could have been better - much better.

On the counter side, handing out gold stars is necessary for the elite performances.  With that being said, let's touch upon the early games for Week 2 in Big Ten football...

Big Scare In Iowa: What's Really Going On With Bryan Bulaga?

According to the Des Moines Register, an Iowa radio station has described Hawkeye offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga as questionable for Saturday's rivalry game against Iowa State.

Not much more is known about the reason for Bulaga's possible absence, but the mystery has led to a great deal of Internet speculation about a serious injury or even illness.

Bulaga is arguably the most talented player on the Iowa roster, and FBT named him one of the "Big Ten's Best 11" only a few weeks ago.

If Bulaga will in fact miss Saturday's game, hopefully it's nothing major and he can return to the field soon.  Always hard to make sense of what's just Internet rumors and what might be real, but the story of a health issue (some have said with Bulaga's heart) seems to be picking up steam.  Obviously the rumblings of something season- or career-ending are cause for great concern, but at this point, we just wait for concrete news out of Iowa City.

CFB: Iowa vs Illinois NOV 1

UPDATED: Postscript re: Twitter...   Some of the Twitter-rumors have been assigned to us as a source, again we want to clarify that we didn't break this story and have no first-hand knowledge of what is or isn't going on.  We want to avoid any speculation until further details (and confirmed facts) are known.  However, the FBT Twitter account did RE-TWEET (quote and mention) this post, as we reacted with surprise to a possibility that could have a great deal of impact on Iowa's season.  We haven't confirmed the rumor, and we don't know at this point if it has a basis in truth or not.  Until we do, we've deleted the "re-tweet" so as to not add to the confusion.
