BackGarage.com: An Excellent Interior Design Resource

We're always looking for frugal ways to add more pizazz to our homes. Vintage furniture and accessories provides a unique way to punch things up without paying a lot.

In Chicago, one of our favorite resources is the website BackGarage.com. Founded by Katherine Raz in 2008, the website is a treasure trove of items found on Craigslist, at garage sales and local estate sales.

What to do about the ugly house next door

You've found it at last--your dream home. It's the right size, the right price, the right neighborhood, the right everything.


Except, of course, for that eyesore next door. What do you do? Buy or walk away?

The Chicago Tribune's Mary Ellen Podmolik recently addressed this question in her article, "What do do about the eyesore next door."

Her advice?

First, try talking to the owner of the property with issues. Second, call the municipality which likely has ordinances that regulate a property's appearance.

If both efforts fail to bring results to the house's appearance, you can decide whether you can wait long enough for the house to change hands.

In the case of a boarded-up, vacant home, real estate agents also have become well-versed in spinning the positives to buyers, namely that one day it will be sold and rehabbed.

"People need to be told of the potential that's coming," said Jeff Parise, a Coldwell Banker agent in Chicago. "It's going to change hands too."

Attractive universal design home products for aging Boomers

According to a recent AARP study, 89 percent of people over age 55 want to stay in their homes as long as possible.  At the same time, Baby Boomers are beginning to enter retirement. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the number of Americans over age 65 will increase by 79 percent in the next 20 years.

This means that as Boomers age and choose to remain in their homes, they will need to retrofit their homes to accommodate their needs. 

Mary Umberger, a reporter for Tribune Newspapers put it best in a March 1 article:

"If so, something's got to give. Sorry, but aged knees tend not to handle stairs well. Arthritic fingers are known to struggle with doorknobs. And at any age, a wheelchair might become one's constant companion. Most of our houses just aren't designed to accommodate a decline in physical mobility."

Her article highlights five products that Boomers should consider installing to make their homes accessible as they age.  Each of these products was created by following the principles of "Universal Design," which aims to make all homes accessible to everyone regardless of age or disability.

Live Green at The Heritage of Palatine

Close-out sale offers eco-chic model at Heritage of Palatine

The eco-friendly Colfax model is now for sale during the builder's closeout sale at The Heritage of Palatine, a new 48-unit luxury condominium development at 50 S Greeley St in downtown Palatine.

"Three luxury Colfax models are available for purchase starting in price from $279,900," says Marylu Max, sales manager for R. Franczak & Associates. "The most notable is the builder model which is known as our 'eco-chic' Colfax model in which the design team used many eco-friendly materials as not to leave a carbon footprint on the earth."
