Three worst host gifts

It's holiday party time, and no doubt, you're polite enough to bring your host(s) a gift. Please do. It's rude to go empty handed.

Three gifts you should just ignore when you're thinking of what to get the host:

  1. Cocoa-in-a-cone. It's cute, it looks fun, it's a mess to make.
  2. Cookie mix. I'm not talking a box of Duncan Hines Sugar Cookies. The "homemade" cookie mixes that are pre-fab. Yes, they look cool, and who wouldn't want to make cookies? Your host, that's who. Give this, and I promise the food pantry will get it tomorrow.
  3. Hostess soaps. Useless, smelly, and they smell like the 1970s.

Wine is always good. Even if the host doesn't like it, or doesn't drink, s/he can always re-gift.

Coffee is always a good host gift too! Get it ground in case the host doesn't have a grinder.

Honestly, those cute little soaps always scream at me to buy them. I love them and then think, what the hell are these doing in a world of antibacterial liquid pump bottles? It's sad, but they've met their demise and indeed leave a host wondering wtf to do with them.

@sanford: I like the coffee idea, thanks!

@gropius: I feel for you. Perhaps use them to scent up a closet or dresser drawer?
