Three gifts you should just ignore when you're thinking of what to get the host:
- Cocoa-in-a-cone. It's cute, it looks fun, it's a mess to make.
- Cookie mix. I'm not talking a box of Duncan Hines Sugar Cookies. The "homemade" cookie mixes that are pre-fab. Yes, they look cool, and who wouldn't want to make cookies? Your host, that's who. Give this, and I promise the food pantry will get it tomorrow.
- Hostess soaps. Useless, smelly, and they smell like the 1970s.
Wine is always good. Even if the host doesn't like it, or doesn't drink, s/he can always re-gift.

Coffee is always a good host gift too! Get it ground in case the host doesn't have a grinder.

Honestly, those cute little soaps always scream at me to buy them. I love them and then think, what the hell are these doing in a world of antibacterial liquid pump bottles? It's sad, but they've met their demise and indeed leave a host wondering wtf to do with them.

@sanford: I like the coffee idea, thanks!
@gropius: I feel for you. Perhaps use them to scent up a closet or dresser drawer?
