Does This City Make Me Look Fat?

Tomorrow: Talking health care reform on WTTW Channel 11 @ 7pm

Catch me and a handful of other concerned Chicagoans tomorrow night on Channel 11 WTTW's Chicago Tonight at 7pm, as we discuss health care reform.
Health care reform is one of those issues that's hard to get my arms around. As someone who lives with chronic illness, I see doctors frequently - and my health care costs are a significant line item in the household budget. A plan that would guarantee me coverage no matter what - even with pre-existing conditions (which is a BS concept anyway) - is my desired outcome. What that sort of plan would look like exactly is anyone's guess, and I can't imagine every detail so I've stopped trying to argue with folks about the specifics.

But there are a ton of resources for Chicagoans who want to get educated on the issues or advocate for change. The Campaign for Better Health Care organizes rallies and helps get you in touch with your local representatives. Senator Dick Durbin offers resources at his site, as does Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (and if you want to see what your representative has to say, here's a handy list). Plus the Tribune is on the case, with new stories breaking daily.

No matter your views (or your state of health), it's essential to stay current on this important debate. Health care reform will affect all Chicagoans - everyone in this country, really - so I hope you're staying current. At least tune in tomorrow night and see what some of your neighbors have to say.

Hopefully you can urge Politicians to spend less time promoting the criticism of each other, and more effort on finding solutions. Then maybe real progress will begin.

One thought they should consider is the junk food industry. Like tobacco products, junk food is certainly contributing to today’s health problems. Making things much worse is because much of what we eat is so processed that it is no longer nutritional. One blog I’ve been following,
http://enoughdangit.blogspot.com
plus hundreds of other sources, lists some of the problems with todays food, such as bleaches & chemicals used to process grains into flours for bread, pasta, etc. It might be worth considering higher taxes & fees for junky food & more tax breaks for producers of clean, organic fresh foods. That might help in the long run to gain funds for health care & stimulate healthier habits with fewer medical costs from consumers, plus farmers would have incentive to produce more fresh healthy product & hire more staff.

Also, instead of major community festivals giving winning awards to junk such as ‘deep fried butter’, perhaps we need more federal, state and local governments to encourage festivals where the best tasting HEALTHY dishes win. Boy, could we use these. I mean, how could 'deep fried butter' even be considered anything but a hear-attack? Plus they could use these events to promote all the information that’s been lacking to ensure that consumers better understand better health habits, which would help reduce medical needs, thus lowering the expense. Healthier people are also more likely to work harder, so there is yet another added benefit.

Finally, there also is great need for better availability, especially to those not ‘wealthy’, of the information on HOW to locate quality care physicians & tell the difference between doctors that want to HEAL & one that is just going through motions. Too many people are being injured or killed this way in a slow and painful manner.

There was a suggestion for a Database of ALL Doctors noting who are guilty of malpractice, loss of license, & noting other significant complaints inclusive of patients conditions being exacerbated, or new problems emerging as a result of their treatment or lack of. This will fill the need to ensure that ‘professional’ health care providers furnishing care are actually qualified professionals using their skills to HEAL, not just line their own pockets at the expense of hurting others.

Hopefully, the Politicians will considered options such as these, and spend less time on HYPE and slander campaigns against each other and more effort SOLVING the issues. Then real progress might begin.

Good Luck with the program.
