Youth Violence Too Big For Huberman To Handle

The sad saga of Ron Huberman's SuperSecret violence prevention plan continues to unfold, full of shifting numbers, unexplained delays, and looming obstacles.  The number of kids identified as most at risk has now changed several times, according to the Tribune.  Neither the much-vaunted victims study, the no-bid contract, or the full plan of action have been made public.  And there's no clear plan for coordination of services for kids who likely already have counseling, a PO, assessments and treatment plans on file, or other services already in place.  It's a train wreck in the making.

All this has me thinking that, before we get much further, it's time for the Mayor to put someone in charge of the entire effort.  Call it a youth violence czar.  After all, the problem goes way beyond Chicago Public Schools - as does the required response.  The Mayor's already developed his own plan on top of the Huberman plan.  And Huberman already has his hands full with the Board (and no real authority over CPD and the other agencies).

So move Huberman out of CPS and into the job fulltime, or bring in a big gun to crack heads and make everything work together.  Otherwise I fear there's going to be a lot of time and money wasted and a lot more gunfire involving kids come spring.  CPS -- and Huberman -- can't do this on their own.  This much is already clear.

Alexander's idea of CPS having an anti-violence initiative Czar or coordinator seems like a good idea to me, just as long the coordination process itself does not cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The CPS has a very bad habit of turning program coordination into a sink hole for money.

I like this idea too. However, because I've seen current laws and regulations designed to help children develop and avoid failures in school and life flouted by current personnel in schools and other institutions, I don't feel hopeful for it. If adults - including the bosses & mayor - in all the civic really arenas wanted to help these at-risk students, the system would have already been working.

Right on Alexander--finally someone realizes that Ron does NOT know what he is doing--it is a shell game and the emporer has no cloths. Ron needs to be removed and quick! What a waste of ime, money and LIFE.

You are right Alexander! Ron needs to be removed now. he does not know what he is doing and is proving this everyday! What a mess and he cannot get ahold of anything. He is wasting time and money and LIFE. Daley needs to get him out-his mess will only get bigger.

The suggestion that Huberman take over as 'safety czar' makes some sense. He has a background now with the CPD, CTA, and CPS. He could take Sarah K. with him where her no-nonsense style would be a much better fit. And Central Office, for once, could be put under the management of smart educators.

If Daley continues to push his privatization canard, no intelligent educator with smarts and successful managerial skills would take the job. Sad to say, as long Daley is mayor, the majority of our children will be cheated out of a world class public education.

Maybe the reason there's no transparency and no details is that there is in fact no plan. Stating you intend to implement a plan does not mean you actually have a plan. Like with PM. Anyone seen a plan for that? Nope. PM now exists, but there is no plan. There is just 'do PM'.

There isn't even an organization grid--who the hell is even playing the game? Ron is gaming the tax payers.
