Fed up with suburbanites who park their fannies in Millennium Park's 4,000 seats, a Northwest Side alderman on Wednesday suggested preferential seating for Chicago residents.
"You have people from the suburbs who get there earlier and glom onto all the seats. ... They're putting their blankets across rows and rows of chairs," said Ald. Eugene Schulter (47th)Mayor Richard M. Daley rejected the idea out of hand, saying that many suburbanites, through their corporations, have given substantial amounts of money to the park's construction. Which, of course, seals any possibility that Schulter's idea will get off the ground.
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea. Even as a suburbanite, I think that it might have some merit, seeing as how many suburbs impose additional fees on the non-resident public to use their facilities. North Shore beaches are a prime example, where the price of a ticket to use the beach or to park nearby can only be considered to be so punitive as to keep out non-residents, Chicagoans in particular.

How are Chicagoans discriminated against at North Shore beaches? Would they pay more than I (a Northbrook resident) at Glencoe Beach, for example?
