After considering discussing a deal that would have sent pitcher Rich Harden to the Minnesota Twins earlier in the week Cubs GM Jim Hendry told the Twins that he was not ready to wave the white flag of surrender with his team 5 games out in the NL Wild Card race.
The Twins were very interested in acquiring Harden who they looked at as a potential #1 starter in the playoffs and were willing to pay a fair price to land him. However, after seeing Colorado struggle last weekend Hendry decided to go all in and try to make the playoffs rather than dealing one of his best arms. The talks really never got very serious.

So Hendry's going all out huh? So who is he going to bring in that can HIT and when do we get Heath Bell to close?

Rick Morrissey is a moron...he can't structure a complete question, let alone a "lucid" thought.

yep, mgj.. that's why he's on tv and you're here, posting anonymously.

This is what might be called "specious" reasoning. Do you think Keith Olbermann is an idiot? What about Bill O'Reilly on the other end of the spectrum? Either way, they're on TV, so whichever side you fall on, internet commenter, is wrong.

This is the 7th post in the last 3 days about Harden not going to the Twins. An event Jim Hendry called, "the biggest non-story."
I am curious if the basis of the "facts" presented in this post are from Kap's standard "excellent" sources? How did Kap become aware of this information since there is no attribution. Did Kap talk to Hendry? Did Former Playgirl Model Steve Stone talk to people up in Minnesota and feed this info to Kap? If so, why no quotes? I know Kap has a lot of sources in the industry, he's got his picture taken with most of them if you check out his blog banner. I don't think it's asking too much for Kap to let us know the source of the information he's passing off as fact.

A couple quick comments, if you will...
A- Who are your sources and why don't you ever name them? Was this that little devil Steve Stone that told you all this info?
B- If talks never got "very serious", wouldn't that imply that Hendry didn't wait to see Colorado's weak showing over the weekend? I mean, Harden was claimed when...thurs or fri right?

Glad Henry didn't throw in the towel yet. I've heard on radio sportstalk statistically the Cubs only have about 3% chance of getting the WC, but those odds can change fast with a good week of baseball. What were Colorado's odds or Houstons. Considering all that happened this year like losing are top RBI guy, Gregg and all his blown saves, bradley distrations, Soriano leading off for way too long, and a bevy of 15 day DL's for others THIS team may still be albe to put a few good weeks of baseball together and get close. They are the getting healthier. Its been a cool summer by chicago standards so they can't be tired.
I'm still haven't written them off yet. You get withing 2-3 in the next 2 weeks I think this time will get a rush of adrenaline and the so called chemistry will be back. I still think that blown save by Gregg in San Diego was an absolute team demorilizer. That one stands our more then any this year for me. Put the team in a funk for alittle while mentally the next few nights.
Hopefully those games at ATT park are meaningful for Cub fans.

I never mentioned "sources" because I talked directly to Jim Hendry. He told me that he would not throw in the towel so the talks never really went very far. While the Cubs don't have a very good chance of getting in they still believe that they are alive so that is why they didn't make a trade to move any of their players.

I like Hendry, but if that was his reasoning...then he's a pretty dim witted GM. 6 games back, chasing what...5 teams? Not a very intelligent strategy.
Kap, I'm going to have to imagine that he was humoring you. No GM in their right mind would do what Hendry is saying they did. I'm willing to bet that the Twins didn't offer a better package than what the Cubs will receive when Harden turns down arbitration and signs with another team.

Thanks for clarifying where your information came from this time. Direct quotes and the actual questions asked can also be helpful, that way we don't have to rely upon your interpretation of whatever Hendry may have said.

Hendry decided to go all in
Going all in but he didn't make a deadline acquisition? Sounds more like he said, "check."

It's only a story if the Twins were really willing to pay big for Harden. Then you have to wonder why it didn't happen since this season is over.

Jim Hendry should maybe watch the Cubs try to play baseball.

Hendry's right, the Rockies are collapsing, when you factor in that five game losing streak they went on, they've only won six of their last 11 games. The hacks! Meanwhile, the Cubs have started closing fast, winning six of their last eleven.
Why at this rate, the Cubs will catch the Rockies exactly never.
Jimmy Greenfield said:
Agree, it's a long, long shot. But the Rockies lost those five straight leading up to the Aug. 31 postseason roster deadline when Hendry was making the decision.
IvyChatChuck said:
Cubs are 7 wins behind Colorado right now and 6 behind San Fran. The Rockies and Giants play each other three times which means, best case, the Giants win two of those. That means the Cubs are effectively 8 wins behind the wild card leader with 31 to play.
And that's just to force game 163.
The more likely reason Hendry didn't punt was to keep a few more butts in the seats in September. Empty seats are not a good advertisement for PSLs.
Doesn't matter. Seats are going to be plenty empty from here forward.
Karry Ling said:
So what? Three of those Rockies losses were to the Giants, which means the Cubs didn't gain any ground on the Wild Card lead. They weren't and aren't chasing the Rockies, they're chasing the Rockies, Giants, Braves and Marlins.
I don't care if they traded Harden or not, but the reason that they were somehow more in the Wild Card race because the Rockies lost five games on those particular five days is ludicrous.

Can we waive those flags yet? Did Pinella getthe memo that we weren't waiving the white flag?

The Cubs gave up when Lou named Jeff baker as the regular second baseman after just a two week hitting streak, and not a real look at what he could do. At the time, the team was in first place by half a game, and since Baker was handed the job, they have sunk into 10 1/2 games back, and they lose when he plays second, no matter how well he hits. In those few games they have played since when Fontenot started, the team has won, even when he was hitless. Baker is a bad influence on the team, and he makes his team mates uncomfortable. He tries to make Theriot look bad, as well as Bradley, by getting in their way, preventing them from making plays. On double plays started by Theriot, Baker sometimes completes the plays, but when the ball is hit to him , he deliberately takes his time getting it to Theriot, so that he cannot complete the play. No other player at second base does this. Theriot could get seriously hurt by getting the ball so late. In the Sox makeup game, he went way around the umpire to get to first base because he feels it is beneath him to cover first base. He can run faster than he does, with his long legs, but he thinks he looks cool when he doesn't hustle. He thinks guys like Fuld, Fontenot, and Reed Johnson are foolish when they hustle. This guy is bad mojo, and he spooks his team mates. The Cubs would do much better if they dumped him.

Did your crystal ball allow you to see into the soul Jeff Baker or did you do his astrology chart?

Interesting analysis. I've also noticed a correlation with the Cubs falling out of the race and the volume of back to school clothes sold at WalMart.
If only we could get kids to stop buying back-to-school clothes, all would be well.

Here's what the Cubs do: trade every single player except Soriano and Bradley to Baltimore, once you get there, send everybody down except for Brian Roberts. Now you've got your second baseman/leadoff hitter AND rid yourself of those two jokes, who are left on a triple-A team with the beloved Bobby Scales. Then we'd just have to convince Ricketts to buy that team, move it to Chicago and change its name to the Cubs. YEAH! Anyone? .... ANYone?!?!

Once again we need to thank Jim Hendry for another bad move this year. Could have gotten something for Harden and the other under achiever and he doesn't pull the trigger. But signing a head case like Bradley to a 3 year $30 million dollar contract he is all for. I think he has lost it. Takes alot of talent to turn a 97 win team into a .500 team. AWESOME. Should have kept DeRosa and signed Dunn instead of Bradley. At least with Dunn you might get a 200 strike out hitter, but he would give you 40 HR's and 100+ RBI's and he is NOT a headcase. Plus, he can't be any worse in right than Bradley and hop, skip and jump in left field. Atleast its College football season.
