I would change the name if it meant ten extra dollars for the payroll. Are people really this stupid?

Sure change the name but leave out Jerry Reinsdorf

I prefer "Paint Me Orange Stadium"

What's the problem? Wrigley will always be Wrigley, regardless of any updates or improvements they make to the name or the field itself, the same as the "Willis Tower" will always be the Sears Tower. I'd even go as far as tearing that place down for a league championship. Seriously.

Half of us still call "U.S. Cellular Field" Comiskey Park.

Actually, I'm surprised there aren't ten different corporation names tagged onto "The All-New Yankee Stadium."

Half of us still call "U.S. Cellular Field" Comiskey Park.

And the other half don't talk about it at all.

I don't care if they name it "St.Louis Cardinals RULE! Stadium" as long as under that it reads "Home of the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs"

The fact that "No" is at 38% (or > 0%) makes me so depressed to be a Cubs fan.

I know, but it sucks to put a number on just how many are this stupid.

Christ this is asinine.

I'd be in favor of blowing the whole damn ballpark if you could guarantee me a World Series and there are actually people out there who would rather not see this team win it all if it meant the name on the Marquis wasn't still named after a gum company?.

I offically hate Cub fans. What a goddamn embarassment.

Mike D. said:

Ahem. And make that blowing "up", although I'll admit I'm willing to go quite far for a World Series championship.

Marquee, not Marquis, I'm obviously thinking about the former Cub pitcher who's going to have a drop off in the second half that will make the '77 Cubs blush.

My grandfather was buried with Cubs gear in his casket. I was very young when he died and I don't remember being with him, but I remember seeing a picture of him lying there, and a big Cubs logo was right next to his heart. He lived and raised his family in North Chicago and the Cubs were a staple in his life. For me, the stability of the Cubs in Wrigley Field in Chicago is the only thing that graces my heart. My grandfather died without seeing the Cubs win a championship and if the same happens to me, that will be fine with me. It's a fine thing. But what's important to me is having the Cubs in my heart, and tending the fire, keeping it alive, no matter what. If the franchise changes the name, city, or loses the historic aesthetics of the field as they are (improvements in the unseen and/or fan-serving infrastructure, and tasteful advertising though, I am in favor of) but if major aspects of the Wrigley and Cubs identity changes, the Cubs will never be the same for me. They will become just another franchise lost in the spectrum of sports business for me---not the franchise that was ingrained in my soul. Of course I want them to win a championship...but for me, the Cubs brand is special just as it is. Changes to the team are one thing, changes to the brand and the basic identity of the Cubs is entirely different, and I like the brand as it is and I want it to stay the way it is.

This is absolutely pathetic. The 28% of people who voted no make me embarrassed to be a Cubs fan. I would do ANYTHING to see the Cubs win a World Series, and any other true fan would say the same thing. That is the ultimate goal here, people. If you care that much about where the Cubs play or what their uniforms look like or how good-looking the players are then you can just GET OUT because that is RIDICULOUS. Good God, I hope idiots stop voting and this survey can stop making Cub fans look like total morons. There are some people who actually care about baseball. Go Cubs!

It's like asking "Would you have Ron Santo canned in order to have the Cubs win the World Series?" I wouldn't give two poops about the Cubs if I didn't get to listen to Pat and Ron. I don't even really care if they win so long as they don't play crappy baseball. Keep it Wrigley Field. Winning the World Series would be awesome but winning isn't what makes the game awesome. Silly people.

Anyone who is voting no has to be a white sox fan.

Kap,

Every day you sound more and more like a White Sox fan! One cannot be a die-hard Cub fan (a redundancy) and care overly much about winning. The park, the neighborhood and their history are why most of us go to the games, listen on the radio and watch on TV. if winning had been the only thing over the past 101 years there would be no Cub fans at all. Cub fans are constant. White Sox fans are with the team when they are winning but not when they are losing.

Kap,

Does it really matter what the park is called??? I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, and as a 55 year old Man, it is and always will be Wriglel field. They can change the name tomorrow, it will always be Wrigely. the new name is U.S.Cellular, but in My mind and out of My mouth it is Cominski (pardon the spelling)

I voted no based on the poll for two reasons. 1) Option 1 does not state what time frame the world series title would come in. We could change the park to billy-bob's ballpark and be guaranteed a WS victory... but it could be another hundred years. 2) Option 2 does not preclude the possibility that the Cubs could still win it within the next decade or other reasonable amount of time.

if you want smart answers from your callers/responders, write smart questions. Your question is as loaded as are all the answers and in fact is designed to elicit stupid remarks. Ed Sherman's question about Sammy, which you agreed with (said you'd make it your question tomorrow) is just as ridiculous. I have to believe your phrasing is for the shock value and to get people all worked up.

Finally!
Sherman is giving an analysis Zell's tactics to get the last buck out of the sale. Sorry, Kap, but I have to believe most of this show was pap.

i am all for the cubs winning the world series but not at any expense!!!! i want the cubs to win as bad as the next guy but lets be reasonable !! the cubs have the third highest payroll in the mlb and see where they are at!!

First of all, I don't see how the name Wrigley Field, which invokes a gum company even though it is technically named after a former owner of the team, could be more important than a World Series Championship.

And second of all, even if the name were changed, it would be nearly impossible to determine whether the extra revenue from that change contributed to the Cubs winning the World Championship.

It's simply a silly, silly question. Absurd, really.

Changing the name will not get the Cubbies to their ultimate destination. They have to have the will and the desire to get to the World Series. As big as a Cub fan as I am I just do not see their hearts and drive in it this year. Could it be that the were shut down the last 2 years in the Post Season?

It's probably not healthy to treat a sports team as a substitute for any departed family member. That said, I think everyone here would agree that the Cubs should never change any major aspects of the team or stadium because silly things like championships should never eclipse the fire in a single man's soul!

I take it that you are talking about selling the naming rights
so to get more revenue more revenue buys you players, but the point is you still have to buy the right players. Yea name it anything you want but can you gurantee that money will be spent on the right players?
