Brad Biggs reports that the league sources believe the Bears have interest in Brandon Manumaleuna, a tight end who specializes in putting a hand on the ground and keeping defensive ends away from quarterbacks. While any decision that makes the Bears stronger in the trenches is a wise move, the acquisition of Manu would raise the following question:

How will Mike Martz use Greg Olsen?

Some fans (many on this site) have posited trading Olsen for a bag of balls and late-round draft picks. These fans, most commonly referred to as "unintelligent", ignore not only the player's brilliant potential but also his rapport with our star quarterback. Olsen is not a tight end without flaws. His blocking is subpar and he's shown a propensity to drop too many balls. But in a pass-heavy Mike Martz offense, Olsen will finally be able to extricate himself from the ill-fitting confines of the blocking world. Martz will line him up in the slot and out wide, force opposing defenses to put linebackers and safeties in uncomfortable situations and allow him to become more than merely a safety valve. (I also hope Martz will retire the red zone fade route in the corner of the end zone.)

There are many tests for Martz this season. Developing a consistent run game, decreasing turnovers from Mr. Cutler and scoring in the red zone are the big three. But Martz' ability to drain everything possible out of Greg Olsen may be one of the defining effects of his possibly-short tenure. I've long maintained that Olsen is the key to this offense. Here's hoping Martz is the man to use him wisely.

I completely agree with Jeff. Olsen is a talented pass-catcher and he should remain on the team. We can do a lot better with Greg Olsen than with a "bag of balls and a late-round draft pick." Last week I pondered aloud whether the Bears would be better served moving Olsen to WR or not.

The only problem with moving him to the slot is that now the receiving corps has Hester, Knox, and now Olsen as slot receivers. Who is the odd man out?

Kellen Davis can be a talented pass catcher too. A TE who can't block is essentially just a slow unathletic(possibly a taller) WR.

Before, completely disregarding the possibility of trading Greg Olsen, shouldn't we first find out what we can get out of him? What if the Cards would take a package deal of him and a 3rd for Bolden, or the Rams would take him and a 3rd for Alex Barron.

certainly not Rash...he plays Special Teams.

that made me laugh out loud. I want Olsen to continue to develop. He may never be Shockey or have as bad of hair as Shockey but the kid will get better and better. My only concern is that i like Cutlers chances of not throwing picks when he is NOT out there. It just seemed like he would lock onto him a bit. Olsen had some big catches last year and i thought he showed a lot of potential so it will be interesting to see how this little soap opera plays out. We don't need a 4th rounder and some cash for him. we have the cash and Jerry will just fuck up the 4th round pick. We need Martz to find a role for Olsen so he can get better and so Cutty can have a big target.

On a sad note, i just read that Bennett is having knee surgery that will keep him out of part of off season workouts. that doesn't bode well for this kid who is going to have to learn the shit out of Martz's encyclopedia of pass routes and check downs.

So if Olsen had of been on our roster for the Superbowl in Jan. of '07 he would of been the key and we wouldn't have lost? If Cutler gets blind sided next year and Kaleb Hanie has to step into the role we should be OK because Greggy boy's still tripping down the field adjusting his helmet?
How is someone unintelligent because they have an opinion that differs from another fans opinion? I never heard anyone suggest low picks or a bag of balls for Olsen. I suggested getting a 2nd rd pick for him with maybe something smaller like a late rd pick thrown in. I like Olsen and would love him to stay, but I get the feeling they might try to trade him. Just like you feel they wont trade him. Whichever scenario plays out, I dont think the person who is wrong about what will actually happen is unintelligent. because it is just another fans "opinion". Some of their inquiries & moves lately at T.E just made me think they might trade him. Thinking they could use a 2nd rounder in this draft. Plus the fact Martz covets blockers 1st & foremost. I am not saying I want him traded, just feel like they might do it, just thoughts about it. I was just surprised to hear you say that. I like your blogs and you seem pretty cool and are a knowledgeable Bear fan, just like the rest of us. You seem to interact with everyone well,so keep the blogs coming, thanks. Mike Tice had a 14 year career in the NFL as a tight end, and it wasnt because he could catch passes. Hopefully with his coaching and knowledge of the position, he will help G.O. become a more complete tight end.

"Anywhere is an option," Sharper said Monday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "Coach Lovie Smith, I have the utmost respect for him. I've played against him for many years and seen how he's built that program in Chicago. I'm a firm believer in what he's doing up there. I love the Chicago fans. Wherever I go I want to go to a great fan base, and Chicago has one of the best fan bases in all of the NFL."

sure it's just chatter, but indirectly he's interested in playing for Da Bears. let's oblige him and give him a reason to light up (Brett Favre?), AP, and fagbeard AKA Childress

Blogfather..as one of the "commonly referred to as "unintelligent" I ask you this..
Is it the Chicken or the Egg?
Is it the Coach or the Athlete?
Is it Roman Slave Owner or Gladiator?
In a system(Mart'z system) a TE is blocking first catching second( his words not mine) how do we play an athlete that has the diffuculty of this basic skill. Now don't get me wrong Mr. Olsen may surprise us all, but with a habit of poor blocking,YAC 2.7 yards and not being able to battle a DB who is 55lbs less for a simple yard and is incapable of completing this task.
Please enlighten me! as I have repeated many of time "This is a Violent Game" not all are to be the warriors that play in it. So I leave you with this snipet to enjoy:

Mr. Olsen I ask you do understand the "Dogs of War"

I think Olsen is going to excel under Martz and be one of the top 5 TEs production-wise next year. I don't think Olsen's ass size has anything to do with breaking tackles NoCal, but hey maybe that's just me. If the o-line gives a couple more seconds of protection for him to seperate from LBs, he is going to be automatic. Olsen is obviously Jay's favorite target and their chemistry will only get better next year. His blocking can improve. He caught a lot of well-deserved flack for his lack of blocking this past year and I expect him to work on it. I agree Kellen can contribute and we know what Dez can do if we decide to keep him around. Word is the bears are interested in Chester Taylor. I would much rather have him than LT or Westbrook. I'm hoping Jerry's feelings of job insecurity and desperation will turn into needed spending and competitiveness in free agency. Think short-term Jerry, you're Bears life is on the line.
Rolle, Peppers, Taylor or my.

This is what I see. I see a team that is a c#nt hair away from being the worse team since the 1995 Bears. I also see a team that can be very competitive if we get off our high horses and trade away some players that will not hurt our performance on the field. Now if Jeff thinks Olsen could only be traded for a bag of balls and 4th or 5th round draft picks, then what can does that say about his "real value" not a "fantasy land" perceived value. Holding onto players like Olsen when Martz is trying to snatch up another tight end as we speak seems to indicate an emotional attachment which is very dangerous in the NFL. This is the big league gents and I think its a huge mistake not to shuffle the deck especially when our asses are so near the proverbial crack. Its going to take bold intelligent moves that will save the day, not emotional ones.

I could care less what our TEs name is. Look, Olsen was a good pick, for as long as he lasted he was definately worth the roll of the dice that late in round 1. But the reality is he hasn't done anything amazing for this team. He isn't even the best all around TE on the roster much less the key to the offense. Martz has said he will find a way to fit him in.... translated that means; well he isn't what I want at the position but I have to deal with the cards I'm dealt and we have no day 1 picks and a shallow FA market so.... Am I still sore over the double fumble game against Carolina one driving and in the Red Zone and the other giving them the ball in the Red Zone; yes. But noone outside of Chicago is trading him to their favorite team on Madden, he is no Gates or Gonzalez, hell he isn't even a Shockey, he is just a decent pass catching TE who can't run block well. Why all the love, oh wait he did go to Miami; and every TE from there will be great. Just like Klaussen will be the next Montana because he went to ND.

Interior Lineman, Safeties, a DE. There is your list, you fill that and see a 6'3" WR sitting around hire him too but I don't know why we are looking at TEs and RBs.

Well, I typically agree with you Jeff, but I gotta be honest, in this case, I couldnt disagree more. Here's what I mean, if Greg Olsen, or any Tight End for that matter, is the key to your offense...you've got a pretty bad offense. This is what happens when you DONT HAVE top tier receivers...Im not saying that position cant be very productive and important, but lets not get crazy here...

I, being one of the definitely "unintelligent" have always approached Mr. Olsen's future in this manner:

Get rid of him.

Has it ever been stated that I want a draft pick and pigskin for him? No.

However, I have in the past, and will continue to for as long as his pass-dropping self remains on this squad with any possible value attached to his name, state that he should be bundled up with a few other over-hyped, over-valued, and under-performing "stars" on the team to get us eiter of the following:

1) A proven performer
2) A #1 draft choice

I'd give him, Urlacher, and Hester a "good luck in all your future endeavors" salutation if it meant getting a player to fill a HOLE. The way I see it, TE is not a weak point for us with Dez and KD still in uniform.... Not to mention the idea of Manuamalelamauana joining up.

Could Olsen and a group of over-valued guys be the key to getting Mr. Suh in town? Not likely... Would I send Greggy packing if it did? Damn right.

Would I send Olsen packing for a draft-pick for Jerry to blow on another under-performer? Nope.

Package him up and get us someone who has either proven themselves (Or has a last name that rhymes with "Do") from a team who thinks he's worth a turd...

See ya later Greggy. You can always get s#!t-faced with Jay during the off-season. Not in the Red Zone.

And try diving for passes for your new team.

XOXO

I would have probably gone that way at the end of 08... but after seeing how awful we were and how futile all our LBs looked trying to fill in at Mike in 09 and how with Jamar in for Briggs, we didn't miss a beat(I think he had 20 tackles); I have decided that a lot of Briggs numbers have to do with the position in the Cover 2. So for me I would rather have to put Jamar out there for Briggs than put any LB we have out there for 54.

Thanks Trac and Lobo, I’m here guys.

I’ve thought about this for a while this morning, and while that post was fucking weak in my mind, I’m not going to be a sensitive little bitch about it. I’ve been the most vocal proponent (besides Irish) of trading Olsen THIS offseason while he still has perceived value – for what I feel are very valid and logical reasons and there’s no way I’m going to change my opinion… mostly because I think I’m 100% right.

To sum up my long-winded ‘trade greg now’ argument from about 3 other past posts:
•	Guy can’t/won’t block, not even downfield – this effectively makes him a big, slow WR… and if that’s the case let’s just get a good, fast WR like Boldin to replace him (the argument that he creates create mismatches is silly, a Boldin also tends to create mismatches and not just with DE’s in coverage)
•	2 YAC avg (not sure if this is because of his ass or not Fresno, but it’s an actual stat and not my opinion)
•	He drops balls because he won’t dive/jump/sell out for a ball
•	Cutler will throw to him no matter what… at the detriment of other OPEN receivers (100% Johnny), or just throwing the ball away when he needs to
•	He’s one of the only players on this team that still has perceived value - at a position that’s now 4, and maybe soon FIVE deep. We don’t need 4 fucking TEs – trade one for something we do damn well need!

I just don’t see how anything to do with any of our TEs is even remotely more important than getting a couple guards, a disruptive DE, and a FS or two in our house. Trading Olsen is one of the most available avenues for filling at least one of those emergency gaps in the next couple weeks. Anyway, those are my thoughts. You can either agree with them or not, but if we don’t trade him this offseason it will be a big mistake in my eyes.

He is "sub-par" at his number 1 job by your own admission and you call me unintelligent? I can take a joke, but the irony is so thick its congealing right now.

Dez can block, Davis is ok, why would we be looking at another tight end when we could already conceivably get rid of one? Ah yes, Martz must get his own Tommie Harris-style bum to coddle as part of his contract, his own subset of the Lovie BFF Club.

Trading Anderson away for a DT would leave us sorely lacking at DE unless we are signing Peppers or Kampmann as part of your plan.
Not to mention Anderson is an RFA, and if anyone wanted to take him away it would cost them a 1st and a 3rd, you could probably get a 2nd for Hester and a 2nd for Olsen as well so that means you would invest a 1st, two 2nds, a 3rd and player into a draft pick. That is nearing Cutler's cost for someone who hasn't ever been through an NFL physical before.

Why all the hate for Olsen and the love for Kellen Davis? Davis hasn't shown anything as a blocker or as a receiver. He's big as a house but that's it.

Would you base player evaluations on John Shoop's offense? Turner's was only slightly better. The trio of Turner, Houdini and Pep "Fucking" Hamilton scares no one! Let's see what a real OC and OL coach can do with Olsen. Until they got Aroma in the mix, Olsen was the only receiver Cutler trusted. He forced a million throws his way. Most defenses knew this and rolled the coverage to Olsen's side. The guy has some unique skills. Let's see what Martz and Tice come up with for him.

I'm a little surprised by the unintelligent comment from Jeff. I don't agree with most of you about Olsen but I'd never say that. Just agree to disagree. Now Mad Max on the other hand ...

Olsen is not a good pass blocker, he drops too many passes. If he would live up to the HYPE we are fed about how good he is and how he is a game changer, it would be a different story. I will defend him somewhat though, his production is benefited by him being able to stretch the middle of the field which requires the O-Line being able to hold up longer than my COLON does after I eat Mexican food(which btw isn’t long). The O-Line’s inability to block and pickup blitzes should be the issue we are discussing. From what I have seen last year EVERYONE on the O-line is suspect. Everyone on the line has missed blocking assignments, blitz pickups, and made other screw ups(HOLDING PENALTIES) that have cost us dearly. EVERYONE of THEM!!! !!! Martz’s offensive schemes success is predicated on pass blocking so much so even the TE has to be involved so the routes the WRs run have time to develop. The revolving door style blocking that is played by the O-line is unacceptable. Maybe its coaching, maybe laziness, or maybe they are just that inept. I don’t know if we should trade Olsen or keep him and really don’t care either way. I do know that if the O-Line is not fixed it does not really matter because JC will be throwing off his back foot for interceptions or be driven into the turf for a sack. No amount of talent at a WR/TE position will help if the line is not improved.

Canada, it's not at all hate, it's simply football mathematics.

I’ve never said the guy won't get better with time, or that he's complete sheite (unless we’re talking about his blocking), or that another team wouldn't be able to take better advantage of his skill set due to their distinct needs... I’m simply saying that the value isn’t there for us in our current situation. And that he’s in the unique (and unenviable) position to be traded to allow us to fill some of our more pressing needs/gaps. I’m sure he’s a great guy and a blast to be out chasing women with on a drunken Friday night, but that doesn’t help us much on Sundays.

Thanks for the congrats. People in the States just can't grasp how important hockey is up here. Just a little illustration; on the Canadian version of SportsCenter (much better than ESPN, trust me) they go through all the hockey news before anything about the MLB playoffs or the NFL games. This is during their EXHIBITION season. It's like a religion up here.

I like Olsen more than I trust JA's ability to draft talent.

Unless some of you guys did say trade Olsen for some late round draft picks, well then...yea I agree with Jeff, that would be unintelligent. Actually that would be down right F****** retarded.

Since that report came out of signing Manumaleuna, I really don't remember anyone saying that though. Again, I don't read EVERY post but I read quite a few. I know my stance was trade him for a #1 WR like Boldin since they will require the same compensation if traded. A 2nd or 3rd round pick. Hell, I don't know if it's even that easy to be honest. Who the shit knows what's involved in a guys contract anymore. I personally don't know what the in's and out's of a NFL contract even are. I'm even having trouble figuring out this whole CBA Agreement that's so god damn frustrating.

No doubt Greg Olsen is talented right? Everybody can agree on that. I would only put a few guys ahead of him. One guy is even in our own division, Jermichael Finley...that guy is the complete package. Everybody is saying Greg Olsen can't block...really? Have you seen overwhelming proof that he can't? Does anybody have any tape of those allegations? Now everybody misses their assignments from time to time but to say the guy is a terrible blocker that might be going a little far. The whole O-line dropped the ball last year, not just Greg Olsen.

My beef with the guy is that he has a paper thin vertical and has bad timing (who are we kidding, the guys white) JK. I'm white. But why are we using him in the red zone as a fade option anyways as Jeff pointed out? WTF!! That shit pisses me off more than the FB draw, at least that play makes sense. Yes even 3 times in a row {O.k not really). Or the little 5 yard pass to the edge were he gets popped for a loss or a 3 yard gain every time.

The bottom line is all that Jeff is saying is wait and see how a REAL OC will use a gifted TE such as Olsen. There is a such thing as a 2 TE Set people.

Again, trading Olsen for Boldin or equivalent makes sense in my opinion, for anything less would be asinine. Might as well keep him around and see what Martz can do with him if that's the case.

Hey guys, did I miss anything?

Gone for the weekend and all hell breaks loose.

Mad Max has his monthly and bleeds all over da blog.

Blogfather gets all righteous on our asses.

WTF?

Seriously, if anyone's suggesting trade Olsen for late round picks, I've never read it. And that would make it one or two in hundreds of posts. Seems weird for Jeff to pull a move like that. Perhaps we are just a play, orchestrated for his amusement. Perhaps he's just planting the seed of contempt in order to orchestrate some mild rebellion. Perhaps he also blogs under the pseudonym of the wonderful Mad Max for no other reason than to make his play more interesting. Enter Villain stage right please, enter villain stage right.

You should consider slumming with us on the actual board a little more often Jeffy. I've oft' wondered why you don't. Is it to maintain the allure? Might you entertain the notion just long enough to explain your comments?

As for Olsen, I've been on the fence for this guy all season. Prior to that I thought this would be his pro bowl year. I've certainly let many of this board's argument sway my opinion toward the negative. But maybe he's just one year removed from that pro bowl year. One year later than I thought it would come anyway. Perhaps Mike Martz could use a new crinkle to his offense. People would have a new factor to game plan against. Surely he must see this potential.

In the end, I can't let Mike Martz system be the deciding factor. We all agree that it's just a lame duck staff. In the end, it hurts the FRANCHISE to rid of a potential star (yeah, I said it) for just a one year roll of the dice.

On the other hand, I'd take him for Boldin and some modest package in a heartbeat.

As for the Pisa news, I'm confused, wasn't he signed thru 2010? I thought we had just established that recently. Guess that's what happens when we get our news from blogs. Course, that's what you'd expect from us unintelligent folks.

Another good post Jeff! Unlike most of the other folk bitching because Jebus forbid you call them a name. I also think I understand what you are saying that Olsen is the "key" to this offense.
Also, I don't see any way(if Tinoisamoa is elsewhere) that Williams beats out Hunter in the spot he excelled best. Don't get me wrong, Williams is a keeper for sure! He has done his job every time we asked him to. And his job, like it or not, is to backup 54, Briggs, and Hunter/Tinoisamoa. His other job is to kill somebody on SpecialTeams, and yeah hes good at that too.

We don't need to wait - Martz has already been very vocal on the subject. TEs block in his schemes and that's it. Any pass catching is done by receivers and the back will catch 80 passes. No one suggested trading Olsen for anything lower than a third ... that's as high as he should have been drafted.

There's a power struggle going on at Halas Hall. Who's running the show ? Angelo appears to be keeping Olsen ... (from the Sun-times, http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/2073159,CST-SPT-bear27.article)

There has been speculation that Greg Olsen might be deemed expendable because tight ends are primarily blockers in coordinator Mike Martz's offense. Angelo all but ruled that out as well.

''It's a possibility,'' he said when asked if he would consider trading a player for a pick. ''Do I see it happening? Probably not. If it did happen, it would happen on offense because that's where we're going to have the most change.

''A name was brought up to me [Thursday] night about a potential player who might not be a real good fit,'' Angelo said, presumably referring to Olsen. ''I know his name has been bantered around. Players look at themselves and how they fit. That's just normal. They want to know. But we're in the business to keep our good players. We're in the business to make sure our schemes facilitate our better players. To me, that's what good coaching is about. Us trading someone away at this point, I don't see that happening.

i'm convinced that Martz will be able to find a way to tweak his offense to include Olsen. If he can't then he is the equivalent of Lovie Smith. Great concepts but unable to adjust to changing circumstances.

Pace got cut, good riddance. Take the 6 mill you didn't earn last year and never enter the Chi confines again. Jerry, that one was on you. Talks at the combine heating up that the Bears will be a real player for Peppers. Please get this guy rather than Kampanwho is just coming off serious knee surgery. He will make our whole D look ten times better. The Cards couldn't wrap up Rolle, he'll be on the market come free agency. Get these 2 guys and were back to being competitive next year.

I think that's about right. Olsen needs another year under a new OC just like Cutler & Co. does.

It's easy as hell to criticize Olsen for not blocking, but really, we just never had any WR depth to speak of at all, and if that isn't addressed, it won't matter who the TE's are. At all.

And here's another thing that worries me some. If Hester is given back his K/P R role, will he have anything left to give it, or has he turned that wierd corner so many guys do when they are treated like various salad ingredients?
