According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, the Bears are targeting both Julius Peppers and Aaron Kampman. It is very exciting to know that, if these rumors are true, the Chicago Bears' brain trust has finally recognized that the defensive lineup lacks the requisite talent to compete for a championship. According to La Canfora:

Peppers, <a onclick="s_objectID=" http:="" www.nfl.com="" news="" story?id="09000d5d81688f7e&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true_1";return" this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true="" href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d81688f7e&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true" target="new">who will not receive the Carolina Panthers' franchise tag,
is the Bears' prime target. However, Peppers will not come cheap -- he
was seeking around $40 million guaranteed from the Panthers. The Bears
traditionally are a frugal team, but in this limited free-agent market,
they are prepared to jump into the sweepstakes for Peppers, who had 81
sacks in eight seasons with the Panthers.

Adds Mike Florio at PFT in a rare moment of true comic splendor:

Then again, if Peppers ends up in the NFC North, Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie will have two games per year in which he'll need to be ready to claim after the fact that he was injured.

Defensive end, safety, right tackle. Those are the big three positions for the club. Signing Peppers or Kampman would knock one off the board in March.

$40M represents a lot of eggs in one basket. The actual rate will be based on what other teams are offering though. With 8 seasons of wear it may be a bit steep. However, Peppers would elevate the defensive play across the board. The Lovie-2 scheme is predicated on hefty pressure within the first 3.5 seconds of the snap. Any longer and we get a repeat of the last 3 years. Peppers would definitely change that next season if the Bears are able to pick him up. Quick pressure in the backfield makes the corners better, safety better, etc. So if you spend the money up front you won’t need a boatload for the other positions. If the purse strings get untied for this guy I’m predicting super bowl champs next year :-)
And it would be nice not to have to play against Kampman two times a year also, but I don’t think he is as disruptive as JP.
Go Bears!

First thing I always think ... "Why are they letting him go ?" Money ? Hmmm. If Peppers was still bringing it they wouldn't let him go. 40 million spondooliks is a lot of wedge. We gave Tommie the wedge and well .... who knows. I'm all for taking players from divsional rivals though. Taking Kampmann and Chester Taylor off our rivals would be sweet.

DE / FS / RT ?

How about FS / WR / LG ?

I'm clearly on my own thinking we badly need a big receiver. I like Shabba, Knox or Bennett in the slot, and that's it I 'm afraid. No more double TE sets. LG is surely more of a worry than RT ? We have RTs out the Kazoo ... Pace, Shaeffer, Omiyale, John Marten's a big boy at 6'8, 310. Free safety is screaming out though ... my God why did we let MB go ...?

I understand that the Tampa 2 is a 4-3 system, but why can't it be adapted to a 3-4? Isn't the whole point of a 3-4 that you can create more pressure by blitzing LBs with greater variety than in a 4-3? If the front seven create pressure, the cover-2 in the backfield will function the same either way.

Seems to me the real reason we stick with the 4-3 is because we are built for it. I don't see a nose tackle on our team, and I don't know why we would ask a decent LB corps to get off of their game and play a totally different scheme. We have too many other needs to start rebuilding the defense.

Totally. We're getting left behind - although one team, I forget who, is giving up the 3-4 this year. I think it might be because they're shit.

I expect we'll become a 3-4 when the current generation of muppets gets back into Lobo's clown car and screech off into the mud .... and after our great linebackers are too old to play it. Sadly. Sell. Ginnie. Sell.

I wish we'd let players go when the tooth has exited out their throat, Lobo. Peppers, Peppers, Peppers. He was a stud. Same age as Kampmann, he's got 3 inches and 20lbs on him. Neither guy is a spring chicken. Meh. Then again, it's not my money and if they gave TH $40 Mill then why not give it to Peppers too ? If it pays off we look pretty sexy and I'll play free safety. But Dan Snyder can enter and win all of these bidding wars. Think he doesn't want to see Peppers and Haynesworth together - that little image never popped up on the mirror as he chopped his breakfast ? I swear I'll bust a vein if they draft another DE ....

Paying for Peppers is idiotic. I wouldn't be as cynical if we did already way overpay for the same fucking guy a few years back... remember? He’s the dude who fucking disappeared for most of the year in the depths of Club Lovie, but managed to reappear for just enough time to punch a guy in the face and get ejected on the second play of the Cardinals game. Oh, and the dude he punched had a helmet on. Brilliant Tommie.

I happen to believe that the reason the outlook is so negative at this time is because, #1 Every time we turned around last year we lost another player to injury, #2 We lost several games we could have/should have won but the ball bounced the other way(this is life in the NFL), #3 Jay Cutler certainly did not live up to expectations last year(argument can be made that he cost us games), #4 Lovie was unable to get the defense to gel using the healthy players we still had left, #5 Lovie's idiosyncrasies were an easy target for our frustration, ie., Challenge flag/time out issues and the bubble screen.

We were looking for a savior last season to somehow step up and keep this team from self destructing but nobody in particular came through on a consistent manner. I think with the personnel moves so far and a little bit of luck in the draft and free agent market this team can be good, hell, even damn good. As part of this blog site, I have witnessed the mood of negativity grab a hold of my attitude and there has been a part of me that very much wishes this wasn't so. I know that things can turn for the good in an instant and I feel encouraged about the lastest hubbub concerning Peppers and Kampman. I also realized that the last thing I want to do is give up ANY ground to the Damn Pekkerheads and Queens. Piss on them and shame on me.

Next year we're not going to die for our team, lets make the other poor bastards die for their teams. Bears fans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser, because the very thought of losing is hateful to Bears fans. We have the finest fans in the league and I actually pity those poor bastards we're going to go up against next year.

Trac..Well said bro..And I am one of those who question the motives of our management..now that being said lets look at the facts:

1. yes. we had some major hits on our leaders..
A. we also brought in athletes that did not pan out. It is not just the athlete but also the coaching staf "THEY GET PAID TO DO A JOB!!! we also released a leader (Mike Brown) by saying he was long in the tooth and we had youngsters to fill in.... NOT SO LDL

2. Life in the NFL yes. but I will steal it from Boy Roy "We are playing checkers when the rest of the NFL is playing Chess" we are coached constantly...this is not of our athlete's as much as not preparing them correctly.

3. this is also a part of #2 yes. JC did make some mistakes no doubt.. Who is his coach really?? He needs to be groomed with a QB coach and my guess is it was RT.. now is it all RT's fault no. this was a train wreck with all the passengers blaming each other. Does JC have to man up... yeah but then agian you are talking about a 20 year old. I don't know about you.. but that for me was along time ago in a galaxy far far away. I know how 20 years think..he has to mature and I think he will.. it maybe Martz I pray that is is..for the teams sake.

4. o.k. trac I will give you some wiggle room on this.. But what I saw was LDL givin' love to the boys he annointed and not alowing the youngsters to get gelling until an injury at the end of the year..This is what a coach is suppossed to do when you evaluate talent.. LDL does not he digs down and wont let go..incapable of being in the game!! What I mean by that is "Stay the Course" even when the grim reeper is looking him in the face. That's not coaching thats IGNORANCE! and in some respect selfish not thinking about whats best for the team and not the one.

#5 What part of the "Buck Stops Here! do you not see. You are paid as any other employee and I don't know about you but the reviews are constant..if you continually faulter you are given your pink slip..end of story.

As for the negativity yeah it's harsh no doubt but when your in that business ..If the heat is too hot in the Kitchen then get out. We are all armchair quarterbacks on Monday ..Welcome to reality.. The problem I have is the constant ideals that Blogfather and all of us bring up.. Now I am not a wise man but I do have common sense and what I see from these brothers and maybe some sisters here.? That a ton of the ideas are solid.. Now if we see them why don't they? If we were all genius then we would be in that profession (NFL) working, but we are not we are the observers but have the right as a fan to ask why did you chose that instead of this?

Well that's my rant for the day..
BEAR DOWN!

I am happy to hear we plan on being aggressive at one of our biggest needs, I just hope they really mean it. I was thinking this morning about Peppers & Kampman. I just hope the Bears dont blow it and lose out on both of them. Both of these players will be swept up quickly. The Bears cant go back & forth with Peppers for too long or Kampman will be gone. So then if the Bears decide they dont want to overpay for Peppers,or he likes another team better, then we will lose out on both of them,Ouch! The More I think about it, I think we should just focus & go after Kampman, he will not price us out of the running. Plus we will have extra money to maybe go after Sharper or Rolle, then we can fix our two top needs at least. Then draft for the o-line with our 3rd rounder(or 2nd rounder if we make a trade). Sharper is a real bawl hawk, plus he knows the defense and our division so well. You could bet he would be pumped up to play G-Bay and the Vikings for sure. For running back, Chester taylor is just going to cost too much to be realistic, if we make these other moves. But I am intrigued with L.T or Westbrook. They could pair with Forte & can both catch extremely well, which will be required in this offense. Oh yeah they block as well. Westbrook is so dangerous in open space, you can line him up in the slot as well. But can he stay Health, thats the Big question with him?? I really hope the Bears front office proves us wrong and gets aggressive, like they did in acquiring Cutler. I feel confident that with some of the coaching changes and if they add three big names at certain weak positions we could be playoff bound next year. GO BEARS!!

I think we give him way too much shit on this site. The guy was a man among boys in 05-06, then his fricking hamstring detached from his kneecap. That shits going to sting for a while.
And another thing...Lovie Smith is our best coach by far since Ditka. The guy came in here with a plan. He turned a team of mostly shitheads around and brought us to glory in 2006. Problems since then can be attributed to his head swelling up like my penis at the playboy mansion after a little bit of success plus a few bad injuries and shitty personel moves. Would not surprise me if the team won the division this year. The players love the guy and will play their asses off to keep him from being fired.

Teddy Bear said they wouldn't be doing any big deals (I can't remember the exact wording). I think that rules out Peppers unless the market isn't all that hot for him. I'm all for Kampmann (if it is reasonable to assume he will have a full recovery), Rolle and Dunta Robinson. I just read the Texans aren't going to franchise him. I'd much rather spend a little less on Kampmann and have the cash left over to get Rolle and Robinson. My guess is that it's all pissing in the wind and we end up with leftovers.

To all the guys that keep mooning over Mike Brown, get over it. His speed is gone and all he can play is SS. We've got a roster full at that position. He was my favorite Bear since Walter but it was time to move on. With his injury history and lack of speed, it was time for him to go. Was he a better SS than Steltz, Payne or Afalava? Maybe. Does he have any upside left? No. I wish him well and if he decides to go into coaching the Bears would be crazy if they didn't hire him.

Go Bears!

He's a charachter guy who has a team first mentality and could teach our youngsters a ting or tree! I'd like to see them spread it around instead of another Jay Cuntler "all in one basket" offseason. Go after Kampman, Rolle, LT and a Guard. Talk about an Upgrade! Hell, Bring Lorenzo Niel back into the game, even at his age he's got more power and more balls than McKie.

Not that anyone was going to attempt, but please save the time of highlighting the upside of Wolfe. That guy should not be an NFL running back. See '09 footage of him getting 'leap frogged' by a pash rusher.

We tried for Boldin & Marshall ,but even a 2nd rd pick couldnt get it done. Plus we dont have a 1st or 2nd rd pick this year now. I like the youth and potential I have seen on the team so far anyway at W.R Last year I thought we had to add a #1,but not this year after seeing our young guys develope. Plus Martz & Tice should make a big difference. Cutler & the receivers should improve in year two as well.

I sincerely hope your right about Tommy Mustache. I bought his jersey so I'd hate to have to burn it. The guy's ability is through the roof. If anything, the addition of a guy like Peppers would free Tommy from some double teams (which he still routinely faces). Couldn't hurt Peppers to have a guy in the middle who already gets double teamed either. I do think Tommy is kind of an idiot, but he can be a very funny dude too. He's a good guy with a bad injury and a couple of loose screws. Maybe those screws tighten up with maturity. I'm willing to give him more time to see.

Go Tommy! Prove everyone wrong about you. Kick some ass this year. PLEASE!!!

Saying Lovie is our best coach since Ditka is not much of a complement. There's no denying that he's had some success, but he's made so many obvious bad decisions personnel and staff wise, that I've literally lost all confidence in him. And his defensive scheme leaves no room for mistakes. If the D-line does not apply the pressure, it's just too easy to exploit offensively. I think the cover two is great only when the D-line is great. The drop off when the line is only good is too large to ignore. Lovie can't make adjustments. He's stubborn and downright aloof at times. I thank him for what he's done for the org, but I think it's time to move on.

Nail on the head, Trac. Breeding negativity ... I was just thinking about that yesterday. I was having my midday shower, and what do you think about in the shower ? Da Bearssss. I was thinking, gee, am I a hater ? What's going on ? Can't just get behind your players and support them ? Is Greg Olsen and Hester and all the other cancers really that bad ? Am I just bitter somehow ? What makes a person rip on their own players? And then it hits me like a thunderbolt ...

I'm looking for Walter. And I guess others on here are too.

Pick a player. Any player. Let's pick Olsen in my instance. Some folk think its okay to pop up with a touchdown every two games - he's a 'receiving' tight end, blocking's not his job. Excuse me ? Not his job ? Was Walter Payton a 'rushing' running back, or a 'blocking' back, or a 'receiving' back, a power runner, a scat back ? No. He was a back, and what needed to be done got done. Lawrence Taylor's blitzing ? Bang! Not today LT. Need me to throw a TD pass ? Bang. Fuck it, I'll kick the PAT too. What else d'ya need coach ? Ask not what the Bears can do for you, ask what you can do for the Bears. If you're not going to make the effort then don't turn up for work. Let someone else give 100% in your place. To paraphrase Singletary - "Can't play with them, can't win with them, can't use 'em ..."

I never liked Rex. Even when he was player of the month or whatever, I felt like he got dealt four aces that month. Awesome defense, good running game, pretty hard to FU, right ? And there was a Bear Fan civil war - Rex sucks ! No he doesn't ! yes, he does ! No, he doesn't, look at the stats ! He just didn't have any of Walter's characteristics. Then there was the coming of the light and Jay Cutler. But it wasn't until I saw Cutler get helicoptered as he dived in for touchdown that I saw our new QB. Jim McMahon style - no consideration for his own body/health. Peyton manning wouldn't do that. Manning doesn't risk it all - that's why he doesn't get into the GOAT discussion for me. Toughness. Team first. Win at all costs.

Same thing with Earl Bennett. There's those that buy, and those that don't. Why doesn't everybody jump on the Earl train ? Again, looking for Walter. You can do all the magic you want on the field, but as soon as you sniff the safety of the sideline and jump out to freedom, you're off the christmas card list. You join the ranks of 'me first' spoilt college kids thinking the world owes tham a living. You gave up. You died easy. You don't deserve to wear the jersey. That's why we rip on mediocrity. We're not the Jaguars ... or the Buccanneers ... we're the Bears ... we ARE the NFL.

And we're looking for Walter ....

Good point coach. Harris is #1 dick swinger in the locker room. He could put Urlacher through the wall. Stick another Pepper-sized swinging dick in there and watch the testosterone levels rise. Competition breeds results. Move Alex Brown to the other side, like Hampton suggested, rotate Izzy, Adams and Harrison in there (Dusty?) and we've got to have one of the better lines in the NFL and then the fun starts. When we're kicking their ass with four players again we can start singing the Super Bowl Shuffle ....

??? Mike Brown had a great year this year. Game one alone. If we had a safety on the last play of the game, Rodgers doesn't make that pass. Payne was out to lunch on the LOS. We were down our defensive captain and playcaller, we have no one on that defense without Brian. MB would have helped out big time, it's not about speed. The best free safeties aren't the fastest. What's the point in being fast /quick if you're running in the wrong direction ? Shit, I'd hire him back in a second compared to what we have now.

We're mentioning a lot of cripples here ... Kampmann, Parker etc. Westbrook's next ? Expensive question marks. Is Fast Willie Parker fast anymore ? The Steelers don't think so, and they've only got Mendenhall/moore now ... Based on fantasy football - he was out to lunch this year. LT/Parker/Westbrook .. buyer beware. Give me a young running back to run into the ground.

I watched all six minutes of that out of respect Johnny ....

1. It reminded me why I don't watch college ball - they are some bad tacklers ...

2. Earl has hands. Earl doesn't have anything else. I saw two diving catches that were impressive all right. Everything else was receiving a short to intermediate pass and then getting tackled almost immediately.

And here's the thing with Bennett - yeah, hes a good kid - but do you start him in the slot over Knox or Hester ? No way. His YAC is going to be non-existent in the NFL because he hasn't got the raw speed - he looks like the game is too fast for him. He's Miles Austin-Lite. Throw it inside to Hester and Knox and we know what they can do if they break one. But Bennett ? He'll see time if Martz goes with 4 receivers on the field, but he ain't all that ....

And if he had problems with the last playbook ....

Your idea of a great year and mine are totally different. He played for a team that was 4-12. How many KC games did you see? That's what I thought. Did he make any difference on the pass play that basically killed our season 2 years ago? The deep out by Atlanta to steal a win? The guy has no speed left. Also, you mentioned we're talking about going after a bunch of cripples (your words, not mine). Not one of the guys that has been bandied about has anywhere near as many injuries as Mike Brown. We all love the guy and we miss his leadership. What we don't miss is his inability to be at the right place at the right time. Also, to be a leader you must be a starter.

That was without a doubt the best post I've read on this blog. Worthy of the Blogfather himself. And I couldn't agree more. Problem is, there was only one Walter then and there may never be another one. So what do we do? We either accept the fact that we can't continually compare folks to Sweetness, or we live with continual dissapointment. The thing is the effort. I don't care if a players got the natural ability of Walter, which I would argue many many people have. I care that they display the effort of Walter. Never Say Die. Remember the championship game in 84 when, during the games last play, as the clock expired and the bears had no way to win the game, Sweetness lowered his shoulder and ran over the defender rather than go out of bounds. That kind of heart is hard to duplicate. Emmitt Smith may have had it. Michael Jordan def had it. But it's few and far between. That's the problem with greatness. It makes all of us fans spoiled forever more. Long live Sweetness. We still long for you!

Call me crazy, but I have been thinking about Westbrook the last few days & Willie Parker as a 1-2 at R.B. But theres risk with Westbrook,he hasnt completed a 16 game season in his career, due to injuries. But He is a monster in offensive production when he is healthy. He runs and catches so well, you can line him in the slot & get big mismatches. I think he would really explode in Martzs system along with Forte. Then there is Willie Parker who is a change of pace as he has that elite speed and break away abilty. Plus he also can catch and make things happen out of the backfield. I have no confidence in A-Peterson,Garrett Wolfe or Jones. I hear Thomas Jones might be released, but I dont think he would come back here after his ordeal in Chi. I just dont see L.T as a Bear, just my opinion. I do hope we find someone better to pair up with Forte this season.

CB, I heard Bennett's name called alot last year and he always seemed to be the one that came up with a play when we needed it. Key being "when we needed it". Who knows, maybe Inglesias takes his spot or somebody else steps up but until then I won't knock him. Again, our issue's are with the O-line/D-line/Secondary. Wide outs come and go(Bernard Berrian, Mark Bradley, Brandon Lloyd, Marty Booker etc.) and this will not be an area of concern like the other ones I mentioned are.

There will be some free agents available, who could instantly improve our defense quite a bit looking at D.E & Free Safety. At Free Safety Rolle,Rhodes & Sharper should all be key free agents. There are 3 great options there, so the Bears have several chances to land a good one at a big weakness of ours. The free safety choices will not come cheap. So if the Bears are to be aggressive & fill both holes at D.E & F-Safety in F-Agency, then it makes more sense they will go after Kampman, which is alright with me. So instead of the entire budget being spent on Peppers(he wants a deal like Haynesworth?),we could probably get Kampman,A free safety and a R.B in free agency for almost the same price as Peppers alone(maybe a little more, but we address 3 positions). Then Trade Olsen and another lower pick to get us a second rd pick this draft, then we can go after an O-Lineman. These are just this Bear fans thoughts, how about yours?

When I first heard him mentioned I thought people were suggesting him as a corner, but as a FS I wouldn't pay much for another project guy. But I would whole heartedly agree with getting Kampmann instead of Peppers to try and address other needs.

Very true,But Rolle has shown great ability at free Safety. I honestly think the best free agent at F-Safety for the Bears would be Sharper. Not only does he know the defense we run,he would also be pumped up to play G-Bay & the Vikes twice a year, he knows this division! Sign Sharper to a two year contract and draft a young guy to come along & learn from Sharper. Kampman,Sharper & Willie Parker are possibilities in free agency, plus the moves would improve us tremendously.

Love WP. Get him… once we fill the other 3-4 huge gaps we have, AND if he comes cheap, which he won’t.

Westbrook is done. Multiple concussions.... that's not an 'injury' that's a warning sign. If the guy doesn't want to end up a fucking drooling vegetable in his early 50s, he needs to retire right now.

If he comes back he'll get another concussion the first real hit someone puts on him. That shit doesn't heal, it just becomes more and more of a sensitivity. He's done and we shouldn’t go anywhere near him, and nor should any other team for that matter (for his own good).

Also, you’re forgetting about two other guys already on the roster… #22 and Bell. I think Bell has some interesting upside. At this point, we don’t need another RB ahead of any of our other major gaps. Once we fix those, then RB might be interesting. Not ahead of a real #1 WR though.

MB, By the articles own admission this system was not utilized fully or until later in the year so I don't think it had much to do with the Saints winning the Super Bowl. Things like this may have the capability to totally screw these GM's up who already have a hard time walking and chewing gum. I'm always skeptical of systems like this.

Hi Dan. Nice to see new faces ... Rumblings seem to be that Ginnie will open her purse for one significant signing. One has to assume this is in the region of pass rushing, as it's probably the key position with Wale apparently gone. Two pass rushers of note are available and one has a bum knee. We didn't expect to get Cutty last year ... why not Peppers this year ?

I know it was only one run, but if it wasn't for Hester, Bell was gone in for an 80 yard TD - he can help us. Is Kevin Jones done ? A Mike Bell type, or that big dude for the Raiders is what we need ... last year we changed up Forte with ... ? Garret Wolfe, golf ball in pads. And totally not at the expense of getting us a #1 receiver, MB - top of my list baby - WE DO NOT HAVE A NUMBER ONE GUY. Acid test. How many of our receivers will be off the boards by the end of round 4 on fantasy drafts ? Say what you want about fantasy football, but answer the question guys .... sometimes good isn't good enough.

Trac, I paid pretty close attention to 'fast Willie' last year as I had him on a few teams. He breaks down really easily and just disappears from the season, whenever he's in the games he doesn't have that explosiveness anymore. LJ, LT, Westbrook, Parker have seen their best days and it makes no sense to let them chew the cud in Chicago.

These last two posts reminded me of even when my team is sucking and I am busy as shit that I take time for this team and this blog. You all remind me of my hometown that I miss so damn much and is such a huge part of me through and through. That hard nosed, never quit, down and bloodied and get right back up and keep moving forward. That even if you lose, your opponent will have suffered to get that victory with their blood, sweat and tears too. This is what the Bears have lost that makes us love them so devoutly. I don't think any of us mind losing when we do it smashmouth, going for it and leave it all on the field giving 100% until the whistle blows and the score is final. I see that in Jay. Let's get him a line and some more weapons and see what he can do.
