Fire Lovie Smith Tomorrow

user-pic

Do not wait till season's end.  Do not wait for this to get worse.  It can not get worse.  We have reached the low.  The low point in the history of the proudest of proud football franchises.  Today, in Minneapolis, the Chicago Bears embarrassed Dick Butkus.  They embarrassed the memory of Walter Payton.  They embarrassed the man who risked a life to found them.  They embarrassed me.  They embarrassed you.

And that's enough.  Every minute Lovie Smith is allowed to remain head coach of this team is an insulting minute.  I like to use humor and dare I say (Dare!  Dare!) wit to keep this column interesting.  That's over now.  Welcome to the era of rage and aggression.  I have had enough and I hope you have to.

Fire Lovie Smith tomorrow.  And do it with Shanny and Cowher on lines two and three.

Give that entire staff which includes Lovie, Turner, Angelo, etc...the Vince McMahon treatment. Call them all in one by one and as Vince puts it..."YOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUURE FIIIIIIIIRED!!!" This is an embarrassment to the team, the Bears legacy/name, ex/current supporters, and the city. And if I get the "Lovie is owed too much money" excuse, then suck it up and take the hit. Hell Wall Street companies are getting bailed out for billions, we can take a hit for a few million and be better off in the long run....Oh, and has anyone seen an offensive lineman anywhere in the country that knows what a block is. Running or passing. At this point, if someone can do one or the other, it is better than what we have now. So keep an eye out at the local high schools, peewee games, and div II college games for ANYONE that can block...But yes, LOVIE NEEDS TO GO.....NOW!!!

Good call Jeff. I laughed in a sick way throughout the game and EXPECTED this to happen. Pathetic.
My uncle, who has been a season ticket holder since the early 80's, said that the Arizona game had the least amount of fans left in the seats in the 2nd half that he has ever seen. Fans need to vote for change with their pocketbooks. Fuck this team. I've had no emotion other than laughter the last three weeks. It's pathetic.

Could not agree anymore then you stated it Jeff.....this team plays with no heart or passion its sickening. Time for changes across the board.

Wish List:
GM - Parcells
HC - Shanahan
If not Shanahan then Holmgren would be a great fit as well.

If you watched the game the Vikings were better player for plyer than the Bears except for Peanut, Briggs, possibly Olsen. Can the coaches, can the Cover 2 which is as outdated as a tube tv and rebuild this. It's like watching a slow motion train wreck over and over again. What's with the offensive line, my 87 year old grandmother could geet a sack.

Dear Lovie,

The emptiness you have been feeling in your pit, is the same emptiness we have been witnessing between your ears. You are in over your head. If you were an honorable man, you would walk away from this club. You have said before that all of your decisions have always been in the best interest of the team. Now it is your turn to put your money where your mouth is. Walk away.

But you are not an honorable man. You are a piker. I know it, and you know it. Prove me wrong. Quit, because as you and I both know, you no longer give us "the best chance to win."

Albert in Tucson said:

For whichever of the absolute PLETHORA of reasons Lovie deserves to be fired immediately, #1 at this moment has to be his willingness to PUT THE FRANCHISE BACK IN INTO A 36-10 GAME WITH 6 MINUTES TO PLAY! That is just mind-numbing stupidity.
The fact that Brad Childress was equally as stupid, or worse, for still running Adrian "Oops" Peterson with less than 3 mintues to go does not excuse Mr. Smith's stupidity.

Albert in Tucson said:

user-pic

And yes, Viking fans, I realize the Purple People Cheaters only dress 2 running backs and Chester Taylor got dinged. So What? I'd have run Fullback Tahi or taken a knee before I put my prize runner back into that game at that time.

And while you're enjoying this victory you better start thinking about how Mr. Peterson's willingness to lay the ball down, the flock of penalties you incurred coupled with Head numbskull, Brad Childress, running things will serve you come playoff time against big-boy football teams.

Big Julie from Chicago said:

Hey Albert...your grapes are extremely sour. I have no love for the Vikings since I'm a Packer fan (I know..."f me"). But, it's a good thing for the Bears that the Vikings are as incompetent and as poorly coached as you say. Maybe, with the right decision making and a better running back than AP, the score would have been worse. C'mon, man, open your eyes.

Bears,
I know it will hurt the team financially if you fire Lovie Smith now, but it must be done. He is supposed to be a "Defensive Minded" coach, but the secondary and Defensive Line have never looked worse. I know Urlacher's injury hurt, but if he is the coach you are paying, he should be able to make the needed adjustments. Also, He has failed to find a blocking scheme that works. Cutler has struggled, and one of the main reasons why is that there is no time for him to throw the ball. Also, In weeks past, whenever the Bears have given up a big play, (DeSean Jackson play vs. Eagles or Frank Gore run against 49ers) he seems to show no emotion. He needs to confront the players and correct their mistakes. I think the Bears have the tools needed to be a successful team, but Lovie is a cancer. Don't let money come in the way of the team's success, FIRE LOVIE SMITH! Hire Mike Shanahan (sorry if I spelled the name wrong) or Bill Cowher (sorry if I spelled the name wrong) and make the Bears contenders for next season. Who's with me?

Sincerely,

A very unsatisfied Bears fan.

With Jay Cutler, the Bears have hitched a racehorse to a milkwagon, and now wonder why it doesn't run as fast as it did. The problem is with the offensive gameplan and the surrounding cast.

At this point there are just no excuses. The greatest single failure on the part of Lovie Smith and Ron Turner is that they don't get the whole "back to the drawing board" idea. This season they time and time again have gone back to the same old, unimaginative offense and defense and refuse to fix things that are clearly not working.

It isn't Jay Cutler's fault that the Bears only attempted 11 carries. Lovie and Ron don't know how to run an offense. They have taken Hester from the position he dominated and have put him into a position plays poorly and is ill suited to play. Instead of going out and getting a genuine number 1 target they went and got Orlando Pace, a geriatric player incapable of playing the position in today's game.

We need to dump this O-line and bring in some fresh faces. Get a true number 1 option for Cutler. And try our best to get teams to stay close to the line so Cutler can throw.

This all starts by dumping Lovie and Ron. They don't know how to work with, educate, or lead a throw-first quarterback and they don't know how to surround him with the components he needs for success, and yes I am refering to both Jay Cutler and Rex Grossman.

KentuckyBearsFan said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

face it...they are who we thought they were.

Ron Turner is still calling running plays up the middle, even though he's had an entire season to know better.

(and Brett Favre, Percy Harvin, etc are who I thought they would be too in pre-season...vying for one of the top NFC seeds)

The Vikings outgained the Bears by, what, 3-1 in total yards (like the score reflects).

The offensive line is shit, Cutler has no time, and even knowing this Wrong Turner calls the same kind of plays in the end zone even though his receivers don't know how to protect the ball on a timed pass.

With what I expected, the first half(which was horrible) actually gave me some hope. The second half was exactly what I expected.

If it hadn't been a blowout, the Bears' nemesis Favre would have had a career record in yardage. Hell, he through for about 250 yards in the first half alone.

The second half

The season is over, and it's time to start cleaning house.
There, I said it and got it out of my system...now onto the 2010 season.
Besides an awful O-Line (and I'm a big fan of Kreutz), I don't blame any of the players--there's an awful lot of talent on this team. So to right this ship you need to start from the top and go down, not the bottom up. This entire coaching staff needs to go--from Lovie on down, and while your at it sack the GM too.
The players are a reflection of the people running the team, the ones who are supposed to set the tempo and put the fire into the hearts of the men in the helmets. Lovie roams the sidelines like it's preseason, and his half-time comments ooze of the same platitudes and cliches he's been spouting since the loss to Green Bay in week one.
As General Patton said; "If you can't put some fire into this outfit, I'll find someone who can!"
It's time, Mr. Phillips, to find someone who can.
The Chicago Bears is too storied a franchise to allow itself to be a place where players go to die, or become DOA.
If this atrocious season is not reason enough for the front office to make a change, then standby for an even greater dissapointment as out beloved Bears become the next 0-16 team. But what the heck, the way decisions are made on this team, who knows, maybe that's what it will finally take before some real action is taken to right these inexcusable wrongs.

If

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

We all knew this was coming didn't we? What makes it worse is that Cutler was supposed to quiet our fears and produce a winning season but as a life long bears fan what i have seen the last few years is this storm that is now on the horizon. Does the name Keith Van Horne ring a bell? The 85 Bears started with him. Unless the bears spend every draft pick for the next two years on building a pro bowl offensive line and receiving corps it doesn't really matter who is taking snaps behind center. Obviously Lovie has not filled the true needs on the bears roster and until the Bears front office decides to belly up to the counter and spend the money it will take to fix this mess, don't expect anything other than 5-11 and 7-9 for the rest of your football lives.

Big Julie from Chicago said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You're right, Mike. But, although Lovie coaches as though he's a heroin addict who just had a major fix, it's Angelo the Weasel who hasn't built the roster. Why get Cutler, who is a head case with a rifle arm, and rely on a retread DB/All Pro return guy as your #1 receiver? Why get Cutler, who does know how to win (despite having a punk personality) and put him behind an old and washed up O Line (Kreutz used to be dominant, but what is he....68 year old?). As Don Corleone said about Barzini and Tattaglia..."It wasn't Lovie; it was Angelo. Lovie is a pimp. He never could have outfought Dungy. Only today did I realize it was Angelo all along."

SC Dave said:

user-pic

The 1985 Bears were about as far from a Pro Bowl receiving corps as today's Bears. I would take the current crop over 1985's 10 times out of 10. The real difference with that offense is the other part of what you said, the line. That and a guy called Walter.

winstonchill29 said:

You need to go back and look at the film, son. 85 receivers were much more accomplished than this crew. That said, this group has a nice upside.

Tractor said:

user-pic

Sweetness will always be my favorite and I couldn't ever discount his value to the bears. He was the heart and soul of the franchise. The answer to our current woes is obvious. Without an oline the runners can't run, the passers can't throw and the recievers can't get open. Oh yeah, and the defence suffers because our time of possesion sucks.

Tractor said:

user-pic

I'm with you Julie. I gotta tell you that in my gut I didn't like the trade. Orton was fantastic in the red zone when he was with the bears and he had finally positioned himself as the offensive leader. I say demote Hester back to fulltime special teams and promote arashmadou or inglesis

winstonchill29 said:

user-pic

It's time to fire the leadership of this team first and foremost! Firing Lovie is only a small piece to the solution here! Why does Ted Phillips get a free pass in the eyes of this city all the time?? Because he's the McCaskey's pet dog? If Phillips was any sort of "leader", he would have done a better job A) selecting a GM who would've in turn, B) Done a better job with player evaluation and C) would've brought in coaches who can actually develop players and make the most of them. What a said year for the fans of Chicago who deserve so much more than this pathetic display of garbage we've seen.,

I sat tonight and I pondered the Wanny era. I hated the Wanny era. I hated Wanny, he was so not Ditka and he reminded me of the shmoe you work with who is not very bright but management loves him anyway, because he looks the part and says the right things. Wanny was supposed to be brilliant because he came out of that Jimmy Johnson Dallas system.

He was a schmuck. Hawking Ford trucks at halftime. He brought us years of crap teams who could not get their offensive shit together until Erik Kramer came to town.

I remember the gutty Jim Miller and the total tool Moses Moreno out of Colorado State who was supposed to be 'really mobile'. Sucked it.

But none of those Bears teams, I really really cannot think of another Bears team - that looks as shit on the field as this one does. Maybe the Jack Pardee era Bears, those shit teams that Walter had to endure early in his career. Maybe those sucked as bad as this team does.

This team quit. Top to bottom, this team has no character, no interest in playing tough football - and they are disgustingly overmatched on the offensive line. It's sick to watch what the Vikings did to Pace, ran him off the field. Washed him the fuck up. Kreutz looks like a dog getting hit by a car in slow motion. Williams, the 1st rounder, is making me see Stan Thomas when I close my eyes.

It is awful. Nothing less than a total rebuild is needed. During the Shanny era post-Elway, when Brian Griese was the QB - Shanny would have a different defensive front four every year. He even eventually dealt Trevor Price. That's what we need. No more Butter Harris, no more Adams, no more failed experiment Mark Anderson, and Gaines Adams can get his Hampton Halloween costume off, he is too skinny to fill it in, looks like he's wearing Bears pajamas out there.

It's sick. It's like the Wall Street meltdown, watching Lehman and Bear Sterns take it in the ass from G Sachs.

Let's call them the "Stern Bears" because they need to get financially blown up as well.

It takes a real Bear to coach the Bears. They won under Halas and Ditka. I wanted the Bears to get Singletary before he took the 49ers head job. Bring Jim Harbaugh in from Stanford. We watched them get creamed by Cinci and Arizona and collectively said, "shit, Minnesota is going to kill us". Well they certainly did. I'm thankful Cutler didn't die via death by Jared Allen. I'm a little freaked out because knowing we don't have draft picks means we are going to be stuck with this same basic squad next year. Maybe a big name coach will bring in a few worthy free agents, I don't know. Well, if we're bad enough next year, we'll have a sweet draft position for the 2011 draft.

Guys, if there's a positive side to this, the team chose a great time to roll over and play dead - I don't think the free agent coaching market has been this strong. You say you want a fiery, experienced coach who's taken a team to the promised land? How about Cowher? He said he'd be interested in the job. How about Chucky himself, Jon Gruden? I think one year in the booth next to Jaworski will have him itching to coach again - plus, talk about 180 degree turns - Lovie to Gruden? Then there's Shanahan, who took a rocket-armed kid form Vandy and a lanky goof of a receiver from Central Florida in the 4th round and created one of the most prolific QB-receiver combos in the league (not to mention a few Super Bowls with Elway).

Seriously, we're lucky fellas. We couldn't have asked for a coaching change at a better time. Only problem - I have no confidence in the guys upstairs at Halas Hall. They'll find a way to fuck it up.

Oh, and one more (unrelated) thing - Look no further than Charles Tillman if you need a glimmer of hope at a time like this. That man never gave up, and has been making plays - while being banged up - all year. Props, Peanut. Guys like him make me proud (even now) to be a Bears fan.

Thanks to some other blog (pardons if someone already posted this):
Today, November 29th, 2009 is the first time in Chicago Bears franchise history that we failed to gain a single rushing first down.

So, Lovie, I guess you can put that in your pipe and smoke it.

As I read all of your posts I agree with alot of what you're saying. I do think of some changes. The truth is I don't know what. I have an attachment to Lovie still as the guy that brought the Bears from a poor 2004 season to the playoffs in '05, and the Superbowl the next year. It's hard for me to throw him under the bus. I too thought that Cutler was our ticket back to the Superbowl. I pay for Sunday ticket and I am really feeling jipped. Who would've thought that Marvin Lewis would still be HC this year for the Bengals but look at them now. If we fire Lovie, are we giving up before the miracle? I don't know how to coach football, I am a fan. I love my Bears and always will. I feel the same pain that you guys feel. It hurts. I'm OK saying that I don't know what to do about it. Can you believe that up until todays game I still hoped that we could make the playoffs? Ya know-beat Minnesota and the rest of our schedule and looked at vikes and packs remaining schedule and thought it could happen. I know now that it can't. Is there anyone out there that understands?

There may be swearing, I'll apologize for that in advance. So let's get the ball rolling. This seasons' "F**k You" awards. F**k Rudyard Kipling for starters. Although he has something in common with the 2009 Chicago Bears, in that they're mostly all pansies. I turned off the game somewhere in the 3rd quarter, can't remember if it was just as Favre was about to start a 96 yard scoring drive, or if Cutler was about to showcase three of Turner's finest on a Bear's obligatory three-and-out. And there goes the season. One that started badly, peaked in the second week, and began sinking slowly into a silent oblivion thereafter. Sold a rank bill of goods by management this year weren't we ? "There's your QB. No, our receivers are fine. They're good. Offensive line ? Pro Bowler, yup, two other guys too ... then we've got our 1st round Left Tackle with the bad back in there at Right Tackle ... so that's fixed. Safties ? We like our safties. A-okay, yup. We've got our all-time kick returner in there at receiver, yep. Some evolution required there. No, we're good to go, we feel good about this season."

And there isn't any one place to point the finger, and there's no point in even pointing it. Every one you point to there's an incompetent asshole right behind them, inextricably linked. The Bear's front office is a bucket of assholes covered in superglue. The depressing thing is - that from Ted Philips down - even if they were all air-locked tomorrow, even if you installed Mary Poppins as GM, nothing could change very much within three years. All we can do now is make Denver's draft picks more valuable. Our offensive line is years away from something you'd be proud of. Literally years away. "We'll improve that through FA." Really ? How ? With free agents brought to you by Jerry Angelo and the Children's Television Workshop ? They 'upgraded' the line last year and we got worse at that position. No thanks, no more help from Jerry Angelo please. We've had as much help as we can handle. So, receiving his now-perpetual "F**k you" award, put your cheeks together for Mr. Jerry Angelo. F**k you, Jerry. F**k you very much.

I think an honorable mention needs to go out to a Mr. Ron Turner. Ron currently works for the Chicago Bears in an advisory capacity, he is in fact in charge of the Bear's offensive play-calling department and is responsible for its development believe it or not. No, really, I'm being serious. You thought it was something to do with the Make-a-Wish foundation ? Terminally ill war-veteran gets to coach his childhood team ? Nah. No-beginning-to-his-talent muppet impersonating a professional football OC more like. Every week that passed, media personalities continued to ignore the naked Emperor - adopting a mass-blindness to the fact that an interloper was occupying the seat in the sky with not a clue as to what he was doing. We didn't ignore it Ron. Bubble screens. That's what you are Ron. A limp-wristed pass on a nationally telegraphed bubble-screen to Devin Hester (that guy we used to use to devasting effect on ST.) F**k you Ron.

Ted Phillips. All I know is ... you're cancerous too. Accessory to murder. Please accept our honorary "F**k you".

Mike McCaskey. That smarmy, Angelo-like smug-bastard grin is warmly cherished in Chicago, and here's to many more sterile seasons devoid of passion, direction and winning attitude. During this festive season, please accept our most heartfelt "F**k you" from Bears fans everywhere. Your commitment to mediocrity is matched only by your Head Coach who landed on his knees in Chicago. Due to his particular condition - lack of oxygen at birth - there is no award for Lovie of course, just a ray of hope and a fervent prayer that he can see out his remaining years, well looked after and surrounded by smiling faces at a suitable care facility ... dreaming of that shining game-plan in the sky. Somewhere not too cold, where he can run the ball into three-man fronts all day long, and never lose a challenge when he throws his little red flag. How he loves his flag. Such a *bright* color ....

Fire Lovie now? Of course, but it would be a travesty to fire Lovie and leave in place the man who is ultimately responsible for this abomination of a football team --- Jerry "Utterly Inept" Angelo. Unfortunately, no one except the fan base can fire the worst ownership in pro football --- the McCaskey clan, and the fans will continue lining this family's pockets regardless of how bad the Bears play.

winstonchill29 said:

I couldn't agree with you more. Firing Lovie Smith would be like treating a disease with prescription meds and masking the cause of the problem as opposed to getting to the root cause of the disease. Ted Phillips is supposed to be a leader and put the proper people in place to make the operation successful and he's failed MISERABLY. Jerry Angelo is supposed to be a leader and has also failed to put people in place to make this team successful. Had these men done their jobs, chances are, Lovie Smith wouldn't even be here in the first place and the Bears would have a head coach capable of surrounding himself with coaches who are capable of developing players and getting the most out of the players that are brought to the team!

Murph said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I'm not so sure all these ills can be dropped at Angelos door step. I think most of it has to be on Lovie and the coaching staff. They are the ones who said we dont need Chris Harris,Brandon Mcgowan,Bobby Wade Justin Gage,Mike Brown, but we do need Adam Archuleta, Orlando Pace, and the list goes on and on. Angelo brings the players in, Lovie and the staff assess their play and decide who starts, who stays, who goes. If we had all the players back that Lovie let go because "we have better players than these", and plug those players into the llineup, we would have a better team than we do now. We need to step back and take a deep breath, study the whole picture and then decide who really is to blame.

Fire this guy! Fire that guy! We have the talent to win! Cutler's a winner!
O.K., let's not let our Monsters' Kool Aid blur our vision. Everyone from the McCaskey's on down must be objectively evaluated. I think a change of the Jerry/Lovie tandem is definately in order. Whatever their set of skills are, they no longer work with this group, which cannot be completely discarded as you would be creating an expansion team without the benefit of favorable draft and cap exemptions/favors. Having said that, the talent on this Bear team is TOTALLY SUBSTANDARD! Of approximately 22 starters, how many would you trade, position by position, with the Vikings? If you come up with more 3 you are not being objective. Both the OL and the DL are awful. They have a 2 1/2 receiver in Hester and a young and promising Knox. The RB's have no blocking, and are further hindered by the erratic and inferior passing attack, so they are rendered irrelevant. The LB's have been decimated by injury, but that's football, and how much more does Urlacher have in the tank? The secondary should not be discussed in a conversation re: NFL football. Above average punter and place kicker, though. The punter is about done though.
In summation, this team is in complete disarray. The 2006 SB team was good, but won several games in OT and on big turnovers. Wins, yes, but they tend to even out over time and talent wills out. This leaves the Monsters SOL. The Bears have only hired one head coach with previous head coaching experience in franchise history, and that was just to give GSH a break. It looks bleak to me and all hope must come from the McCaskeys. That does not help at all.

BillW said:

user-pic

Said this before - the only thing the McCaskeys hate worse than eating a contract is humiliation on the national stage. It's up to the media to continually press the issue. Remember Reggie White's last game? The victory lap he took, high fiveing his fans? Remember that it took place IN SOLDIER FIELD?

THAT'S what it takes to get them to pay attention. Of course, all they did was fire one coordinator who was over his head and replace him with another. That may be what the McCaskeys do again.

I want to see stories that prove that the Bears are an amateur organization - way over their heads. No idea how to run a team. No idea how to evaluatate talent. No idea how to develop it or coach it. No idea how to check out the FAs they bring in and assure they are worth it (like Acheletta and Pace).

Really - the ineptitude is stunning. Potash did an article about how the QB ratings every year under Turner start high and degenerate. It's obvious the man makes NO adjustments through the season. Once teams catch on, it's easy to figure out our "game plan".

How many people knew Turner woudl run on first and goal fromt he 8? Why not play action?? Dumb.

Aikman said Lovie lamented the turnovers at haltime, and then said "if you give up over 300 yards in a half, it's a little more than the turnovers." Lovie should fire his defensive coordinator (himself) for giving up 500 yards.

OK - I coudl keep going - but it's so obviosu that BOTH Angelo and Smith need to go - AND they need to be replaced by people who know how to build a team - not people promoted into the position and then forced to learn on the job. Not when you've invested so much in Cutler.

Urlacher FTW said:

Here is the thing, everyone wants us to give Cutler a better line, like the one he had in Denver... and we want to hire Shanny for HC, like he had in Denver... and we have to have a big threat WR, like Marshall, that he had in Denver. He didn't ever have a winning season in Denver either, with all those things that you think will make the difference, he lost.
Yes the Oline sucks, has for 3 years now; yes our WR group doesn't have a true #1 or a long and lanky guy; yes our OC is a baffoon. But none of them badly underthrew Knox in the end zone, none of them single-handedly threw the GB and SF games away. Cutler needs to pull his head out of his ass too.
Why are we shocked about the outcome of this game, didn't we all know Minnesota would destroy us, we are not a good football team and they are one of the 6 best teams in the league. Of course it was easy for them, the only way we could have kept it close was to play mistake free and we didn't.
Firing Lovie would take something unexpected, like a loss to the Rams, you want something to beat your drum over, if they lose to St.Louis, Lovie is gone.

CSauce said:

Part of Urlacher's statement was: "...and we'd rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win." Where has that been this season, #54? The reason we've been throwing so much is hardly because of Cutler - we have no offensive line, and as a result, no running game. I've seen Cutler peel himself up off the turf after a big hit more often through 11 games than I remember Orton having to all season. Urlacher's pipsqueakery is the very reason why he'll never be as beloved or revered in this town as Samurai Mike, Bill George, and Butkus. It's also one of the reasons why Ray Lewis, and not the athletically superior #54, will go down as the best linebacker of this generation.

Dmband said:

You have as much chance of recruiting fans for the Eagles here as I have of getting laid by pulling up in a car to some girl and telling her that she has nice tits. This game? Really? This game was "The One"? It was a terrible game, but it wasn't completely unexpected. The Bears have a bad team this year. The O-Line, WR's, D-Line, and Secondary are all playing much worse than most people thought they would. I hardly feel like this is the Proof We Need to Fire Lovie, let alone an Embarrassment to All Former Bears Everywhere.

Look, Lovie should be fired. He's had his shot, and the team has slowly been getting worse the past couple seasons. I like getting Cutler, but as was nicely shown above, the Bears have gotten almost no production out of their past couple drafts. This team is going to be terrible for the next 2 years, no matter who the coach is. I think that the one redeeming thing is that Cutler is a quarterback worth building around. There are a couple nice pieces (Forte, Briggs, Knox). So hopefully this team can turn things around in a couple years and start rebuilding.

I would love to see Lovie go after that season, but that's probably too optimistic, with the reality of Lovie's contract situation. I think at this point, the best thing Lovie could do would be to start playing the younger guys, and start figuring who's worth keeping, and who's going to be let go.

The rest of this season and all of next season is basically going to be one long audition for the next coach.

OK Here goes..It's all about the money! Cutler gets paid-got to change the offense. Forte is still a good running back-but Cutler got paid. Hester was the best thing ever as a return man-but Hester got paid-got to change the offense. Chico Rivera was a good defensive coordinator-but Lovie got paid-got to change the defense. Stubborn front office people don't want people to think they're stupid-and now that we've traded away all meaningful draft picks for the next 5 years or so-maybe we can hang around the Colts' locker room after they cut their roster down to 53..should be some good scraps coming out that are better than the majority of our latest feeble attempts.. Oh and by the way-I wouldn't think of Chicago as an ideal retirement hotspot-but it surely is if you are an ex-St Louis Ram!

The only reason I would argue to keep Lovie is to not lose our ass on paying his contract. But definitely FIRE RON TURNER! I'm from Champaign and I remember his coaching there he never should have been given a pro position, he should have been bumped down to peanuts and even then I'd be skeptical about making him anything but a water boy. In his 8 years at the UofI he went 35-57 overall and 20-44 in conference play and actually went 2 seasons without winning one conference game. But hell he did set a record in the 100+ years of UofI football...for being the only coach to lose 11 games in a season! …Twice! He got fired and then the Bears picked him up. Why would you promote him to the big leagues when he couldn't cut it at the college level? I don't care whose brother he is, can him and post a want ad for a new offensive coordinator on CareerBuilder because they couldn't do any worse and realistically their true credentials would probably be better or equivalent.
