Monsters of the Midway a Myth

Legitimate Chicago broadcast legend and the pioneer of sports talk radio. Also teaches courses in humility.

Bears fans listen up. I'm, only going to give this sermon once because it is as legit as it can be.

Let's deal in reality. The Bears have no business being referred to as "Monsters of the Midway." Excuse me, but this club has won two NFL titles since 1946. For the most part, based on a strange stat called wins and losses, the Bears have been at best mediocre to average.  Good lord, the Halas men went 21 years - '63 to '84 - without a post season win.

Think about the Jim Dooley era, the sideline ineptitude of Abe Gibron, the largely indifferent years of Jack Pardee and Neill Armstrong. I'll give Dave Wannstedt a pass. He's a great guy who wanted to win in the worst way but just led the nation in bad fourth quarter breaks. Dick Jauron, blah. Lovie Smith, a .500 coach since the 2006 Super Bowl season.

So why do the Bears still pack glamour? The club has a side headlock on individual brilliance. Harlon Hill, Bill George, Doug Atkins, Mike Ditka, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Doug Buffone and the '85 World Champs have perpetuated the myth that the Bears are bullies on the block. Wrong. The bottom line: essentially since the close of World War II, the Bears for the most part haven't scared anybody.

As the say in the trade "After further review" Deuce Lutui's helmet won the fight with Tommy Harris 6-3-1 even. Does Harris really expect us to bite when he says he's concerned about how his out and out stupidity might affect children?

This just in: Crane Kenney has hired one of his friendly Greek Priests to rid the Ricketts family of evil spirits. Crane, of course, is a baseball man whose name always draws comparisons to the greats. You know, guys like Ed Lynch.

I want to believe in the kid and I like his enhanced muscularity but I still have reservations about the "new" Joakim Noah. In fact, I full expect him to do something that will drive the ballclub nuts before Christmas arrives.
