Riot Comedy and the Palascak Attack

Renee Schultz does sick poster design.

I had the chance to check out Riot Comedy, one of the newer showcase shows in town last night.  Produced by three lady comics, the show had the sort of fresh energy and engaged audience that make new rooms a standup comic's caffeine.  Two of Riot Comedy's producers, Liza Treyger and Renee Schultz are pretty new to the scene themselves; the third, Lauren Vino, is more of a vet.  All three seem genuinely excited to be putting on a solid show.

And solid last night's was.  Sharing a bill with Eliot Rahal, Marty DeRosa, and Chad Briggs is always a pleasure.  Adding often-on-the-road Michael Palascak to that mix made things even sweeter.  Of course the setting, the tchotchke-laden back room at chummy hangout Chicago Joe's, didn't hurt either.

Bottom line: vibrant and kitschy venue with limited distractions, stoked producers, and top-shelf line-ups.  I hope Riot Comedy sticks around for the long haul.

And speaking of Michael Palascak, he triumphantly returns from destroying the college circuit for a week-long headlining run at Zanies from July 14th-19th.  One of Chicago's most successful up-and-comers, Michael has been featured on Comedy Central's Live at Gotham, appeared at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival, and probably made a tolerable bit of cash with lucrative college bookings (I'm just saying, those folks can pay!).  Here he is sounding off about Canada:

One of Michael's strongsuits has always been the consistency of his stage persona, and his set last night proved this once again.  His ability to develop layers of punchlines around one single idea is crazy impressive, and his delivery rather endearing.  See him before he vanishes behind a cloud of achievement.

Riot Comedy runs every Thursday night at 9:30 PM at Chicago Joe's.  Michael Palascak will headline at Zanies July 14th-19th.  Visit Zanies.com for showtimes.
