The Chicago Association of Hispanic Journalists (CAHJ) was granted a Community News Matters award to create a new Web site to promote the work of Chicago-area Latino journalists, to publish freelance reporters and to train and mentor student and citizen journalists.
The award was announced today by the Chicago Community Trust and CAHJ will receive $30,000 to launch a new Web site. There were 86 applicants and 12 different projects were awarded a combined total of $500,000.
I am thrilled to be a board member and past president of CAHJ and a lead collaborator on this project along with my fellow CAHJ board members, Antonio Olivo, immigration reporter for the Chicago Tribune, and Fernando Diaz, ChicagoNow community manager for news and opinion.
Our goal is to highlight on this new Web site the best work by Latino journalists in Chicago in English and Spanish. We aim to build collaborations with existing media outlets, journalists and bloggers as well as publish work by freelance, student and citizen journalists.
We hope this new Web site will become the place to get the most comprehensive view of Latino community coverage in Chicago.
