Sotomayor is tough on crime

Get ready. The hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor are set to start Monday.

I'm hoping the Republicans won't throw the reverse racism charge at her. But already there are reports the GOP is going to have a white firefighter from the Connecticut case testify against her.

So are they going to bait him into calling her a racist and question her judgment?

Let's not forget that the Supreme Court ruling was 5-4 in favor of the firefighters. So to cast doubt on her ruling is to cast doubt on almost half of the Supreme Court and the rest of the federal panel that ruled with Sotomayor. Does that make them racists too? Obviously not.

An interesting study was released this week by TRAC Reports found that she is not some raving liberal. In fact, Sotomayor was more likely than her fellow judges to send people to prison. This was true if they were drug offenders or white-collar criminals, TRAC found. But she was harder in sentencing white-collar criminals than her colleagues.
And here's a surprise. She was even tougher in sending immigrants to prison than her fellow judges. She only had 14 immigration cases in the period covered by the survey, and this is clearly a small number. But Sotomayor sent all but one of them to jail or 91%. Only 63% received prison time from her colleagues.

So clearly this is a woman who can't be pigeonholed or stereotyped. I'm eager to hear what she has to say and check back here next week to see my blog posts on the confirmation hearing.
