:::::Chicago Feature Focus:::: Daaimah Mubashshir::::Performance Artist and Poet
The
Chicago
Feature Focus is a bi-weekly focus on queer women in Chicago in all
fields engaged in a variety of projects within their lives and within the
queer community.
This
week I have the pleasure of introducing an amazing writer and performer:
Tell us a little about yourself.
My real name is
Daaimah Mubashshir, I am primarily a writer, however I
love touring my writing into performance and sometimes short experimental
films. I grew up in Houston, Texas. Luckily I fell into a funky artist
crowd that hung out at
DiverseWorks Art Space. I started performing and
making videos at
DiverseWorks before I moved to Chicago to study at the
School of the Art Istitute of Chicago. I have lived and worked here ever
since. (except for a brief stint in Madison. Wi.)
Who or what is your inspiration?
Wow I get inspired very often by everyday life. What people say or do...
or by my own reaction to what people say or do. I know that's a broad
statement but I am consumed by the human condition and our struggles
with power, over each other, over material gains, over our hearts.
Tell us a little about your most recent piece?
Currently I am working on a series of performances as a Character named
Aquaniesha Fox. She has a bit of an attitude to say the least. I use her
to examine race/poverty issues and spiritual inquiries. I'm having a
blast so far.
What celebrity are you currently stalking? (not literally I hope!)
Anna Deavere Smith
What's currently playing on your music player?
Whole Life by Oxia
What's your favorite place to go in Chicago?
I love the
Andersonville /
Edgewater Neighborhood. It has my
favorite hang outs. I'm there all the time. Also the Lakefront around
Foster Beach.
