Fallon gets Shutout against Wolves, IceHogs Win 1-0
Rockford IceHogs's Joe Fallon redirects the puck.
When the Rockford IceHogs and the Chicago Wolves play each other you are guaranteed an exciting game. Friday night's match up was certainly no exception. The IceHogs beat the Wolves 1-0 at home. The game also marked the return of Boris Valabik to the Wolves. Valabik was just recently assigned to the Wolves, from the NHL Atlanta Thrashers, for a reconditioning stint. Both Rockford and Chicago fans were disappointed though, when Chicago's Chris Chelios was announced as a scratch for the game.
Net minders Joe Fallon, Rockford and Drew MacIntyre, for Chicago,
brought their A game to the rink. The game became a battle between the
goalies, as neither one was letting anything get by them. Finally at
7:31 of the third frame, Rockford's Bracken Kearns beat MacIntyre.
Danny Bois and Brian Connelly are credited with the assists.
Fallon earned his first career AHL Shutout, stopping 26 shots on
goal. Even though MacIntyre received the loss, his performance was
nothing but stellar. He was a brick wall, stopping anything and
everything that the IceHogs fired at him. By the time the second period
had ended, he had stopped a total of 35 SOG. When the game ended, he
stopped 42 of 43 SOG Rockford had fired at him.
At 3:37 of the second period, Chicago's Brian Sipotz sent IceHogs'
Mark Cullen crashing into the boards. Mike Brennan took exception to
his teammate's treatment and stepped up to defend the incident. If you
blinked, you missed it, as the fight was over just that quick. Sipotz
managed to land a solid fist early onto Brennan's left jaw, knocking
him to the ice. Brennan, noted to be bleeding from a cut to his upper
lip, was quite wobbly on his skates and needed to be helped off the ice
by Rockford's trainer, DJ Jones. Both skaters received five minutes for
fighting, while Sipotz also earned himself a additional two minutes for
boarding. Late in the third frame, it looked like fans were going to be
treated to a dance between Valabik and Kearns, but the Linesmen
separated them before anything more serious could get started.
MacIntrye and Fallon each received the first and second stars of the
game respectively, while Kearns received the third star. The next game
between these teams is not scheduled until December 26th at the
MetroCentre in Rockford.
