"Bangkok Food Tours" Company inspired as tourists in Chicago!

Many who follow me on Twitter & Facebook ask me how I navigated my culinary research and development tour through South East Asia last month so I thought I would feature one of the companies that helped me out in this lil fun video. "Bangkok Food Tours!" They actually began interacting with me on Twitter long before we met in person just expressing appreciation for the foodporn I tend to share often (haha, see people like it)!

I let them know I was coming through Thailand after Cambodia & Laos, they offered to take me around the local eating scene in Bangkok, and bam- it was awesome- loved it- shared all on my Blog/Twitter/Facebook... And everyone freaked out! Click here if missed pics! Also of interest, this quick video I shot on the fly also reveals that this young dynamic duo, passionate about food & their culture, found inspiration to start their company after a food tour trip they caught in Chicago! Yup, they even took a class in Chicago on how to set up a great food tour company and brought it home to start a Thai phenomenon!

Please share this video celebrating how our worlds connect through social media, food & culture... And get out there and visit them!!! For more info checkout www.BangkokFoodTours.com, and follow them on Twitter & Facebook! Oh, and here's just an example of some of the dishes at some of the restaurants I tried on a quick but hearty couple hour walking/eating tour with them while in Bangkok last month:

  1. Chareon Wieng - Traditional Roasted Duck Served on Rice
  2. Muslim Restaurant - Curry on Egg, Beef Satay
  3. Café de Laos - freshy stream fish wrapped in betel leat, fried squid stuff with minced pork
  4. Yen Ta Po Wat Kak - Authentic Thai Yen Ta Po noodle
  5. Kallaprapruk - Original Curry Served on Roti, Thai-Style Coconut Ice-cream

Loved it!!!!!

Meet Andrew Zimmern of Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods!"

From dung beetles and rotten fish to fertilized duck eggs and brain tacos, we've watched Andrew Zimmern freak us out eating unthinkable things we didn't even know existed on Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods!" But let me tell you from a personal relationship, he is far more than just able to shock & excite. He's worldly, intelligent, entertaining, magnetic, funny and well versed in all things culinary & culture- and I really think you should meet him while he is in town next week!

So you know, I also am an Andrew fan in part because he is a huge fan of Chicago, calling us "America's Greatest Food City" when I interviewed him for the olympics, and recently came to chicago to do a show just on us, actually inviting me to join him when eating & filming from chicago's southside (See video above). Also, how cool of a friend is he to invite a Chicagoan like me to come with him to eat & film in Namibia - will never forget it.

Anyway, I can't say enough about him, but that you should check him out next Thursday, April 28th, when he's speaking at Harper College in Palatine, IL. If you can. He'll be talking about how foods can be key to a culture's sustainability & more! Click here for tickets & info, or call (847) 925-6100.

Positive Picture of Fenger High School, One Year After Tragedy

Almost a year ago today, young student Derrion Albert captured the attention of the world when he lost his life after being brutally beaten outside of Fenger High School on the south side of Chicago.  As you can see from my video volunteering at the school soon after as "Principal for a Day" (click here) and the amazing photos captured by artist Sandra Steinbrecher (must see), there is new life and positivity coming from the kids, teachers, community and their school, that its a turnaround joy that I just had to share with you so that you can see & support along with me!

As I have talked about before, I have the honor of being a part of Mayor Daley's "Principal for a Day" for the Chicago Public School system once a year. It's a tremendous program that I am so thrilled to be a part of! Being able to visit a CPS school, spend an entire day with students, exchange stories, walk the halls, hear about their programs and student groups, shine any guidance on them that I can offer...it's just a great feeling and always one of my favorite times of the year.

Last year, after I had heard about what had happened, I knew immediately that I wanted to help and decided I would be Principal for a Day  at Fenger High School, only a few weeks after the murder of Derrion Albert. I have to admit I was nervous, more so than usual, and had no idea what I was in store for. But I was so blown away by what and who greeted me that day.

Elizabeth Dozier, the real Principal at Fenger, is an outstanding woman and so great at what she does. She was so gracious to me that day and I couldn't have been more impressed with her, the faculty and the students I had the privilege of spending time with. It was a mere month after a tragedy had taken place outside their school and one of their own was killed and these kids were so positive, so willing and excited to learn, I just couldn't believe it. I honestly feel like I was the one that benefitted more from being there that day, not the other way around.

Last year, CPS identified Fenger as a Turnaround School for the year. Renovations took place, curriculum and programs were enhanced and new highly trained staff was brought on to turn the tragedy that had taken place into a fresh and much deserved new start for the students. Sandra Steinbrecher, a super talented local photographer, was on hand all year to capture highlights of this initiative. See for yourself the touching and inspiring turnaround this school has made! For more information on Fenger High School, please visit http://www.fengerhighschool.org.

Billy Dec delivering News Live as Guest Host of the CBS Morning Show!

I never ever thought I would see that title myself, but here's a quick little video montage of me hosting the cbs morning show shooting out my feelings on the economy, Tiger Woods, technology, travel, culinary talent, twitter, facebook, the film industry.. and more! not bad for having to be awake at 230a to be on set & in their make up room by 3:45a huh!?!

shoutout to CBS for inviting me on live TV like that to help deliver the news, such an honor. and special shoutout to on air talent Mike Hegedus, Terry Savage & Laurence Holmes who really did all the hard work, and do it everyday, while still being so welcoming, supportive & fun with me as a rookie! we had a blast!

thank you also to all of you who got up early to watch me, or followed the highlights by following me on facebook & twitter.. which btw, reminds me I must apologize to cbs & all watching for holding my phone in order to send those updates out, so unprofessional... but not as unprofessional as when they came back live after commercial break and my seat is empty because I had to pee! ugh, coffee- sorry! haha, will be better next time!

The Abbey & Lake Geneva, Chicago's Vacation Getaway

As you know from my tweets and facebook posts over labor day weekend, I got to finally relive my childhood dream vacation in lake Geneva, staying at my all time fav, the abbey. The level of culinary, wine, boating, games, swimming, spa, leisure,.. and anything else to just enjoy family & friends.. was such a pleasure.. especially since the getaway was only a 90 minute drive from downtown chicago to the abbey front door (excluding my stops to produce stands and apple picking farms), making it everything I remember, and much much more.. especially with the new additions of a 35,000 sq ft high end spa & a huge hard core bbq smoker out by the docs!  Pretty much my perfect combo in life.

it was also really interesting to see staff at the abbey and surrounding businesses that I actually knew from working in the industry in chicago!  Many people who have been able to escape to lake Geneva, decided to stay!  Top three Chicagoans I have to give a shout out to and suggest you seek out when there are.. 1) Michael Lucero who used to be at house of blues and now runs the abbey (and the best staff ever) as director of operations 2) simon cummings who was a chicago chef that opened up the restaurant "sopra" out there that I enjoyed, and 3) kevin halminiak that I used to work with at dragonfly & martini ranch back in the day who opened the coolest most amazing place I have seen anywhere in a while called the baker house, an old huge historic Victorian mansion that he turned into a killer restaurant & speakeasy type bar that is a must see! (hint: don't miss it just before sun down!)

I will be back! check out www.theabbeyresort.com for more info!

NYFD Running To Remember 9/11 Through Chicago Today!

The New York Fire Department is running cross-country in remembrance of the victims of September 11th. This "tour of duty" started in Los Angeles on August 12 at 8:46am when the first plane struck. They will run a total of 4,600 miles stopping in Las Vegas, Oklahoma, New Orleans, Chicago, Washington DC,.. ending the run on September 11th in New York as a symbolic gesture and commitment to peace & an opportunity to acknowledge emergency services globally. They are actually in Chicago today- so if get a chance, watch & support them for this great tribute!

Below is an excerpt from there page for why they run- truly an inspiration for all.

"We run to remember them. First and foremost this is our purpose and intent, to honor their sacrifice, respect their courage, and appreciate their commitment to service and devotion to duty. To remember them and their humanity. We also begin this journey with an understanding that so many people have suffered and are suffering to this day, the survivors, the loved ones left behind, the workers involved in reclaiming the World Trade Centre Site, the families, friends and co workers of the passengers and crews of the American Airlines and United Airlines Flights, the emotional and physical scars of this attack are devastating and potentially far more reaching than we can imagine. It has changed our world, irreversibly, forever. It is our duty to remember what happened on September 11 and reinforce all that is good about humanity."

Every day, people risk their lives to protect us, so we can all live a better life. For this, I am truly grateful. More info on the organization and their schedules routes can be found on www.tourofdutyrun.com

Well inevitably, someone always asks, how do you work all of that off!?! half of that answer really revolves around working 24/7 and needing fuel/calories to do so... but yes, working out hard is the other half, so thought I would share one of the ways I hit the gym here by sharing an interview mark beier from "chicago fit club" on chicagonow.com did on me a couple weeks ago following (and joining!) me & my trainer james bach for a "hero fitness" workout! Check the video above watching me get pushed to do innovative stuff you may have never seen before (or atleast I haven't).. and click here to read the answers I gave Marc off camera about how i try to stay in shape despite my busy schedule, my alcoholic drink of choice, my worst food vice, what scares me & more!

Oh, and for those who are a friend of mine on my facebook... I'm treating each of you to a complimentary team training session (I love these classes) at hero fitness... No matter who you are or what you may stand for, being a guest at a relatively small event with the president of the united states of America, is an amazing experience that you will never forget. Although I am not hosting or am officially attached to this particular event, I know it will be a great way to experience what I am talking about above. For tickets and info click here!

FACTOR WOMEN raise TOYS FOR TOTS - CHRISTMAS IN JULY!

Friends of mine who have always been amongst the top of those in the modeling industry as "elite chicago" have evolved into a fairly new agency called "factor women" and today I am giving them a huge shout out for more than just their good looks!

Due to tough economic times, loss of incomes, a lot of parents have been struggling to provide for their families, much less give their children all the luxuries of toys & games that many of us are privileged to have. Luckily, the amazing chicago modeling agency, Factor Women, is putting on a toys for Tots Drive on Tuesday, July 20th between 9am-5pm at the Factor Model Management office on 58 W Huron. Please help this awesome cause and bring in some unwrapped toys (or cash) to help out our fellow neighbors, and the future neighbors of our great city!

Shia labeouf, michael bay & Transformers 3 filming in chicago!

Did you all see how downtown turned into a "transformers 3" war zone disaster area this weekend- so amazing! I remember back in November when at the Victoria secret fashion show in nyc, my old friend director michael bay grabbed me and said "hey billy! I want to film in chicago this summer!" and I screamed back, "done! You have my permission!"  haha- I get that my "permission" may have meant nothing, but I like to think that my excitement & welcome in that response, and all the times I have taken care of him when here, and how many other Chicagoans have extended that Midwest hospitality in the same way, may have helped him know we are the right place to bring the action, and the $20 million & 200 jobs filming here this weekend has brought to our city!!

Michael and crew will be back next weekend around the Wacker and Ontario areas w/the Tribune Tower & the michigan ave bridge in the center of "the battle!"  and most exciting for me, people will be filming characters falling from the sky landing right in front of my fav spot rockit on hubbard between 8-10a on Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18!!!!! As always, if can't make it just follow me on twitter & facebook and I'll share the experience w/ you in real time!!! (pic of me and shia labeouf attached)

chicago nerd for hire busts into my office!

if you guys are friends with me on facebook or follow me on twitter then you know I love to share how my life is always crazy w/ random things always happening beyond my control!  Well, earlier this week, during a meeting about my blog in my private office, a super nerd barged in & started causing chaos, so fast that I couldn't tweet or facebook it, but somehow I caught it on video (see above)!  i was so scared and thrown off at first (& worried she was a stripper) that i immediately started sweating as I normally do during my frequent panic attacks-  turns out she wasn't a stripper at all, but comedian angela riccio from rent a nerd and was a birthday gift for our new interactive marketing coordinator tim toomey!

you guys know how much i love chicago arts, theatre & appreciate those in it- & let me tell you that performance definitely took guts!  so shout out to angel riccio who combines years of experience as a stand up comedienne to make us all laugh!  rent a nerd is based in chicago & provides custom comedy entertainment for private & corporate events.  it has grown from a one nerd operation in 1997 to present day with a "gaggle of geeks" booking about 800 performances a year!  check out the video above to see some of the silliness!

Macy Gray in Chicago at Glamorama w/ a New CD!

I'm sure you can tell from all my stories and pics on twitter that macy gray is not only my good buddy, but one of my favorite female singers of all time! if don't know her, she's a super sweetheart, a 2 time Grammy winner, a great mom, has sold more than 15 million records, and is just an absolute talent- and riot! (pic of us at grammy's this year)

I especially got to give her huge props for her newest CD, "The Sellout."  after not being happy with the outcome of her previous project, "Big," she holed up in a recording studio with just a few select friends and musicians, and killed it w/this new creation, as you probably saw in the past couple weeks on Jimmy FallonGood Morning America and The View... so spread the word and pick up her songs on itunes or Amazon today!

Oh, and if want to see her in person in chicago, she is performing at the annual Macy's Glamorama 2010 on August 13th to benefit the Ronald McDonald Charity which I love! This event is truly one of the best of the year-- a mix of fashion, music and charity always makes for a great combo.  Read more for full Glamorama info....

my chicago ribs day w/ buddy andrew Zimmern from travel channel's "Bizarre Foods!" in honor of 4th of july!

That seems like such a random title I know, but I have a personal ribfest every july 4th and I thought this would be the perfect video to share to kick it all off! This video is truly hilarious & fun for me- probably because its part ribs, part chicago, and part a super fun, talented & entertaining friend of mine visiting town, andrew Zimmern... enjoy!

Andrew basically called me a couple weeks ago when landed in Chicago to film at Uncle John's Barbecue on the southside, to help him eat!!! We tackled Uncle John's, a vast menu of rib tips, hot links, spare ribs and more! pit master Mark Sevier was smoking it up over a variety of woods including, oak, elm and mulberry... and I pounded it all... I think even Andrew was impressed!

Speaking of, how cool is his show?? Traveling all around the world to try bizarre foods!?!?! My dream job.  And Interestingly to note, many people who follow me on twitter and facebook, asked me when I was joining andrew on set, why ribs are a "bizarre food?"  to me that's the coolest thing about the show, being in over 70 countries, there are bound to be people out there that think our normal food, is bizarre!  Just as we think a lot of what he eats, is absolutely mind blowing... btw, if you haven't watched the show, you are severely missing out! you can catch the episode of the chicago shoot above in the fall, and more on andrew and the show on http://www.travelchannel.com/TVShows/BizarreFoods.

Twitter pics of Piven, Mayer, Lookingglass, Cubs, Sox, Press, Mayhem & More!

If you follow me on twitter, you know my life is crazy, and that last weekend was no exception. Photos showed me splitting a bottle of patron tequila w/ buddy John Mayer at underground, vacuum packing Jeremy Piven's cell phone in rice after he dropped it in the toilet at sunda, jumping on a dozen tv & radio stations live talking about raising money for art & theatre programs for kids, taste testing more food than most eat in a week, trying to fit more crazy tasks & adventures in a day/night than humanly possible to do whatever I can for my team & city!

It occurred to me though that some of you aren't following me on twitter and are missing out on it all! That's not good! So I included a sample of my tweetpics / life in the last couple days here so you can get a feel for what you are missing! It's always random, always crazy, always entertaining.. and most important.. a great way to stay in touch and create a relationship as I have with so many others! Enjoy- and then click here to follow me on twitter too!

Lookingglass' Madhatter's Ball to Support Art & Theatre in Chicago!

Lookingglass theatre was formed over 20 years ago by a group of local college kids. 15 yrs ago I became best friends w/ two members randomly, Joey Slotnick and David Schwimmer, who introduced me to the group, and I fell in love w/ it immediately. So much that about 10yrs ago I founded the lookingglass Junior Board to get young professionals involved, where joey, david & I began to host great parties for them called the madhatters ball to benefit the theatre and their children's programs! (See video above!)

This year madhatters ball happens thursday night 6/24 and has a whole new spin on it! The junior board has grown so much and so strong in the last decade, that they are taking it by the horns and producing this amazing event all on their own, which means I get to join you all for the fun and come as a fellow guest to party!

The night starts w/a performance of Lookingglass Alice at the theatre, rolling into a party at the ritz carlton, wrapping w/an after-party at The Underground with one of my favorite djs in the world - dj irie!  Tickets and more info can be found at lookingglasstheatre.org

National Donut Day Started in Chicago!

such a coincidence that my first donut binge on twitter this week led right into national donut day today!! Way cooler is that I just found out this tradition, that falls on the first Friday of june every year, started in 1938 right here in chicago as a fundraiser for the salvation army to help the needy during the great depression and to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers in world war I (see video above!).
apparently while the salvation army workers were in france to provide aid and comfort to the u.s. soldiers & rations were poor.. they thought the donut came to symbolize cheer & good work... and crazy part is, they made the donuts back then w/loads of sugar & lard, all fried in the soldiers helmets on the front lines!
the salvation army continues to provide care & comfort to those who battle hunger in the chicagoland area through its food pantries, meals on wheels, senior citizen feeding programs & childcare nutrition programs. on june 4th and 5th donors can help the salvation army "take a bite out of hunger." there will be fundraisers on the street handing out doughnut day tags to donors and local celebrities will be participating in events & providing entertainment at the james r. thompson center from 11am-1pm. also, in honor of this day, select krispy kreme stores & dunkin donuts are offering free donuts. so grab a donut- or make a donation to the salvation army to keep this "holey" holiday alive!

If BP Oil Spill was in Chicago...

thanks to the twitter follower that sent me this map visualizing if the bp oil spill was in chicago - not that we don't feel the pain, anger, fear....that the bp oil spill is bringing to all those south of us - but thought you might find it as shocking as i did to see what the coverage would be like if it happened here in our home town - which makes me wonder, if it did cover chicago, would what you be doing now? also makes me wonder, even though it's not here - what should we be doing right now?

Human Rights Watch Film Festival Chicago

Human Rights Watch is widely recognized for their in-depth investigations, informed policy recommendations, and ability to generate intense pressure to confront human rights abusers and defend basic freedoms... efforts I have always been tremendously interested in and admired from afar... but now it really hits home (literally) as they host their 7th Annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival here in the great city of chicago!

Thursday, June 3rd begins an 8 day series of screenings focusing on some of the most pressing human rights issues of our time, for a total of 9 unbelievable films. Beginning the festival is "The Oath" (video clip above), a critically acclaimed piece directed by Laura Poitras. "The Oath" tells the story of Abu Jandal, Osama bin Laden's former bodyguard and Salim Hamdan, a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay Prison - it is described as a "family drama about two men whose fateful encounter in 1996 set them on a journey that would lead to Osama bin Laden, 9/11, Guantanamo Bay Prison and the U.S. Supreme Court."

The other 8 films cover topics ranging from Burmese reporters risking their lives to expose the repressive regime controlling their country to a Malian mother fighting to protect her 2 year old daughter from female genital cutting. All films were shot in the past 3 years so the subject matters are all current and very much so in need of being addressed. All in all, heavy stuff, but very real, and I am happy they felt chicago was a city that would make a great home for it all. Let me know which one you're going to go see and why you chose it, I'm interested to hear what speaks to you and what human rights you fight for.

Glee Cast Loves Chicago Food!

The city of Chicago, especially the guests at my spot, Sunda, was all up in arms last night as the cast of Glee paid us a visit & dined late night. The cast were all super nice, approachable, generous and even were the ones that suggested taking this pic w/my sunda general manager aeron lancero when he mentioned his kids were fans (Sure ur "kids" are the fans aeron.. Haha).. Great sports.. Even took more pics w our guests and signed autographs... Must like us chicagoans!?
Actually, they must love us, they said usually eat room service when travelling, but said no way to that when hit chicago! I hear they're in town while on their national tour and performing tonight and tomorrow night at Rosemont. I'm not too familiar with the show but it's apparant a lot of you are - someone even told me you call yourselves "Gleeks?"
For those of you totally in the dark, Glee is a show on Fox that's still relatively new, been on for just 2 seasons now but has take the world by storm and has totally transformed the way people think about high school glee choirs! The cast does all their own singing and dancing and I guess that's the best part, the fact that they are all extremely talented!
Anyway, I hear they loved the food and atmosphere so much, they might be coming back again tonight? If you can't catch them at Sunda or attend their concert, Glee is on Fox tonight with their most talked about episode yet - all Lady Gagasongs....I can only imagine!

Kisses from Conan in Chicago!

If follow me on twitter you saw all my pics last night from the chicago theatre "pit" where I was just feet from the stage where conan o'brien was performing live! This pic of him licking labamba's face is my fav... just shows the love he had to be back with the gang & his fans, and how ridiculously funny it all was!
Got a lot of feedback from friends asking me not to blow tonight's 2nd sold out show they had tickets too, so let me cut it short saying I loved the opening where showed him 4 mos ago all washed up at his house with no work, loved that he referenced his days living in chicago/wrigleyville, surprised to see him play the guitar & sing so much, loved all his old characters again, fun to see new local surprise guests, and I'm psyched to see him on tbs soon!

bin donated...

I love creative, helpful, simple and super effective ideas that Chicagoans come up with everyday that continually make chicago the best city in the world- and I'm psyched today to highlight one that an old friend of mine named scott Goodrich is heading up called Bin Donated!  Bin donated specializes in free residential and commercial donation pick-up.  Meaning...large 55 gallon bins are placed around the Chicagoland area in apartment buildings, offices, stores, schools etc and are there to collect donations of everyday goods that are easy and accessible to most, but that many can't obtain for themselves. They gather anything from food and cell phones to toiletries and school supplies. From there, Bin Donated delivers those goods to their partner charities such as Camp of DreamsChicago Public SchoolsInterfaith House and the YMCA. Love it.
It's amazing to hear what has been "bin donated" thus far - 535 lbs of food, 2,826 lbs of books, 2,117 lbs of hygiene products and so much more. Think of all the things in your pantry, in your garage, up in your attic that you're holding on to for no real reason, and then picture all the people you could be helping by donating those items. check outwww.bindonated.org for more info, facts and where you can bin donate... and thanks for your support!

CANstruction for Greater Chicago Food Depository

For years I have been a judge at a really unique mash up of uber creative architecture & philanthropy called "canstruction!" competing teams led by great chicago architects & designers build structures made entirely of canned foods within a 10'x10'x8' space, crazy isn't it?!? Will be crazy when I try to judge who's is best w/my friends and fellow judges Radhika Desai of "Top Chef" and Bill Zwecker of the Sun Times.. they are all just amazing it's hard!
Best part is all cans go directly to 650 soup kitchens, pantries & shelters in the Greater Chicago Food Depository network- that's roughly 678,000 men, women and children. The event actually takes place this Thursday, May 13th at the Merchandise Mart- CANstruction tickets will only run you $25- which is nothing knowing the impact you can make while being wow'ed! For more info and to get your tickets - visit www.chicagosfoodbank.org

my asian pacific american heritage awards belong to you

If you follow me on twitter, you probably got the twitpic I took (shown above) while sitting in shock after presented with the asian American hall of fame award this past Saturday night!  Equally exciting, this upcoming week I am being awarded Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas' Asian Pacific American Entrepreneur Award & the Cook County State's Attorney's Asian Pacific American Community Leadership Award!
First of all, in case confused about the connection, my mom is from the Philippine islands and I still have family there, I have traveled asia & the pacific islands extensively throughout my entire lifetime, and the month of may is very exciting for my family & community as it is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month- a celebration of Asian & Pacific Islander accomplishments and contributions in the United States!  Secondly, I am as shocked as you are, and am completely humbled & honored, and thank all of you for supporting me, my family and my rockitranch / sunda team, as you are very much a part of why all of this is so special.
I may have a very deep and great love and admiration for my asian pacific islander background and culture, but know we built sunda because it was you that we wanted to share it with.  I can't be a fulfilled entrepreneur, not only without the great team that I have, but without you who allow us to do what we all love to do.  And know that I couldn't be effective with anything having to do with community, unless I loved the community that I worked for, which is you.  so thank you, these awards are equally yours, and know they have only inspired me to work harder for you...

Man & Woman of the Year!

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has come up with one of the most amazing fundraising concepts I've heard about in a long time! It's called "Man and Woman of the Year" and this is how it goes..... it's actually a 10 week competition based solely on fundraising efforts. Every dollar raised counts as a vote for that person - they can throw parties, do car washes, anything to raise money! The candidates raise money in honor of local blood cancer survivors, and then that survivor is then deemed Boy or Girl of The Year! All the donations support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society programs, including research, patient services, advocacy, public and professional education and community services.
I am such a fan of the idea that I am helping one of the wonderfully giving candidates host a fundraising "karaoke party" at Rockit Wrigley this Friday. His name is Dr. Jeffrey Baker of Weil Foot and Ankle Institute has put on soccer games, boat cruises, you name it, just in the name of fundraising for incredibly important organization. If you can help spread the word and join Jeffrey & I (whether to sing your heart out or just laugh at/with people like me), in this amazing effort that will be a ton of fun, you would be supporting an amazing cause and so many people would appreciate it!  visit http://il.mwoy.llsevent.org/pledge/index.cfm?mid=JBAKER and we'll see ya there!

My Role on "Nightmare on Elm Street"

kc

If you remember from my video on set of "sin bin" the movie that just filmed here in chicago (btw, great wrap party this wknd at rockit Wrigley cast & crew!), I love playing a small role when tv & film projects come to chicago! The biggest movie project that ever let me come on, and my most difficult auditioning/filming experience yet, is finally out, and its "nightmare on elm street!"
Oddly enough, I won't be able to see it, because I am afraid of scary movies. I know, lame. So please look for me as the cop that finds lead actress Katie Cassidy post freddy attack (pic of us above is actually me hungover after that "hills" episode I was in that filmed the night before & my buddy Katie at a coach superbowl party in miami).
So although my scene is short, I say it was difficult because I had to audition at tp&r casting 3 times for the same part before they decided on it, as apparently the director was very serious about it?  Also tough, I was on set in full heavy & hot cop gear on a super steamy day not allowed to sweat in a scene where I had to walk down a super creepy long dark hallway swat style looking for a dead body finding the most gory scene ever w/katie ripped up all over the place easily acting like it was real (because it felt that way!) delivering my lines freaked out! (but not because I was a cop?)
Don't get me wrong- im absolutely not complaining about it- I'm actually looking celebrating it all! So blessed to even be a part of the magic- this was and is one of my greatest joys that I hope I can keep doing if people will continue having me!  Also just happy to be a part of any kind of film projects coming to chicago in any way as not only is it fun, but these projects have been bringing our state about $141 million a year!
this particular group Platinum Dunes chose to film in Illinois because of pleasurable filming experiences in the state when the company produced The Amityville Horror and The Unborn. They probably also came because our film office gave them a thirty percent tax break for filming in the state. They filmed in chicago, Arlington Heights, Barrington, Cicero, Elgin, Elk Grove Village, Lake Forest, Orland Park,... so we are definitely all in this together, and need to thank all who help make all of these wonderful opportunities for all of us possible! Thank you!

"Story From A New Friend"

als

Last night changed my life. I visited an event that caught my attention simply because of its name "story from a new friend."  when I walked in, someone said the event moved up two month because due to the speaker's battle w/ als, they weren't sure how long she had left to live. That put me into shock. Just as they pointed her out (a young woman w/a cane in a pink dress), she was making her way toward me w/a notebook. Als had apparently taken her ability to use her mouth to speak, because she scribbled "thank you billy," and then gave me a hug. I was numb.
That's me and her above. Her name is anne marie. She is a super smart, funny sweetheart who might be the strongest person I ever met.  I don't know if you can tell by my face, but to be honest, I didn't know how to feel.  I was sad and scared at first talking to someone I was told would soon be gone, yet I quickly began to chuckle words back to her as she scribbled funny things about what we had in common, how our lives have crossed in the past, and if she gave me a pair of underwear that promoted her blog, www.kissmyals.com, would I wear it. (I said yes of course! And I am promoting it now)
I learned a lot. She was an executive coach for powerful business people and companies, a ballerina, a sommelier, and so much more... even though she couldn't do any of that anymore because of als, she somehow showed all of us in a powerpoint speech she gave (unable to talk) how she was so empowered, happy, enlightened, positive,... even when she broke down crying in front of us (broke my heart) during parts that showed the reality of what happens to those diagnosed w/ als, she recovered fast & furious w/a smile, and her strength, optimism and focus became contagious... and a lesson in life.
Imagine standing there being told how not to waste time & your life, while you have it, from someone dying. It was chilling, so true, wont forget it, and I am changing a lot of how I live my life because of it. thank you anne marie my new friend for your story. Oh, she had a request, connect with her, find her, on her blog above, on facebook, twitter, say hi... for me. (and ask her how you can get the speech she gave... so wonderful, sorry delivering it myself doesn't do it justice, it takes hearing it from her posititon)
Anne marie you are absolutely amazing.  And to you "story of a new friend

x2_1360c68

Thanks to whoever snapped this pic of me & common last night and tweeted it out! this is us walking into his premiere party for his new movie "just wright" (click here for trailer) w/queen latifa (who I met a couple times and have to say is one of the sweetest people ever!), in sunda's new private party room! (kr, you can link that to a sales page?)
I especially love this pic because not only is common from chicago (you must click here to hear us rap about our love for it!) (kr, that would be the 2016 vid), but of all the pro athletes there to support, so is nba star bobby simmons behind us from the bucks! Small world.
Most important of all, big shout out to you common, and you allied who produced the premiere, for bringing what probably should have happened in Hollywood, home to where you will always have us behind you, chicago!

My Cameo on "The Hills" because of "Chicago!"

Soooooo random I know! everyone hit me on facebook & twitter (some w/screen shots like above) like crazy when they saw me on "the hills" season premiere last night... many asked how that happened... and long story short... it was a chicago thing!
I actually most of the characters in chicago while visiting my restaurants sunda & rockit!  They have always been super nice and have kept in touch, and when heard I was out there, they invited me with- I just had no idea that it was to film! Thank god they didn't play 99% of what went on that night- omg, it was nuts.
As for deeper chicago connections, I interviewed brody about the chicago 2016 olympic bid (click here to see it), and kristien cavalleri is from here! She and I met on stage infront of thousands both hosting a victoria secret event at northerly island a couple years ago (here's a pic), and we have stayed friends ever since... guess staying friends w/ everyone leads to all kinds of things... til next time!

Chicago Based Intelligentsia Coffee Wins Again!

ct-talk-barista-A_ctmain 0424 sr
If you follow me on twitter, you saw I was doing one of my fav Sunday things to do yesterday, sitting at the bar at rockitpigging out, drinking coffee & reading the Sunday papers!  One story I found in Sunday's Chicago Tribune Food Section is a much share today. It was about how Chicago based Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea, and their barista Michael Phillips (pic above from trib as well), won the Specialty Coffee Association of America's 2010 United States Barista Championship in Anaheim, California! Again! For the 2nd year in a row!
I have not only been a fan for personal reasons, but because I support chicago so passionately, I have actual carried their chicago based coffee at my venues for years, in hopes to keep turning people on to chicago talent & product, so this all makes me very happy!  And now, I am just thrilled that he is going worldwide not only representing chicago, but the usa as a whole in London this June at the World Barista Championships. You have to check out this article and see the crazy concoctions he came up with that lead him to win it all - pretty impressive! And congrats man- keep up the great work!

World Malaria Day in Chicago

First of all- check this quick video made by 4th & 5th graders in Kyoto, Japan- about the horrible malaria problem in Africa they are trying to help- a fight that we here in chicago will be supporting this weekend!
In partnership w/ the Chicago White Sox, Malaria No More will recognize World Malaria Day on Sunday, April 25th during the White Sox/Mariners game in a variety of ways to raise awareness & funds to support their mission to end malaria deaths by 2015. The day will start off w/ my long time buddy, 3-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe winner Jeremy Piven throwing out the 1st pitch. Then American Idol Finalist, Elliott Yamin will lend his phenomenal voice to the National Anthem and God Bless America. Also in attendance will be our Governor, Pat Quinn, showing his support for the continent of Africa.
Why are all parts of chicago & the world coming together? Because every 30 seconds, a child dies of malaria in Africa. Approximately 250 million people are infected with it every year. 90% of those terribly unfortunate people, are under the age of 5 years or pregnant women. Malaria no more has set out to end these deaths in just five short years. Seems almost impossible, doesn't it? But oddly enough, it's not - and you can help! It's a known fact that malaria comes from malaria-carrying mosquitoes, but it might not be known that this disease and subsequently this epidemic can be solved with just a $10 mosquito net!!! You can donate a life-saving net by texting the word "NET" to 85944 - this will last for five years and can cover two people. It's so easy to help!
For more information about Malaria No More and what you can do to help - visit www.malarianomore.org

Speaker at Restaurant, Hotel-Motel & International Wine, Spirits & Beer Show!

The National Restaurant Association (nra), founded in 1919, now comprising of 945,000 restaurant/foodservice outlets & a work force of nearly 13 million employees, has once again chosen chicago to be their home for the annual Restaurant, Hotel-Motel & International Wine, Spirits & Beer Show! Not only should we all be huge fans of the nra for the tremendous amount of income this show brings to our great city of chicago (and to the u.s. in general), attracting tens of thousands of attendees & visitors from all 50 states & 100+ countries, but also because it showcases more products, services, innovative ideas & growth opportunities than any other industry event, reinforcing once again that chicago is a world class leader in all things food, innovation, entertainment, creativity & hospitality!
As for me, I have been attending every year for as long as I can remember to enjoy, absorb, network, learn, and to be inspired.  Last year, I was actually asked to speak on their opening panel! I have to admit, sitting up there between big dogs like mcdonald's & dunkin donuts scared the heck out of me.  But, sharing whatever I had, to help anyone that could benefit, was a wonderful feeling! So, when they asked that I come back this year, it was again an absolute honor & a no brainer! The coolest part was... this time, I was asked to be creative & make up a panel that I thought would be extremely exciting, desperately needed & all around different- so I did!  And here it is...
First off, picking the subject of my panel session was easy.  I am asked almost daily, by all kinds of people & businesses, how to communicate w/ the public when many forms of advertising, marketing & pr have not only been unaffordable in our current economic downturn, but more importantly are beginning to be considered "obsolete" due to the way the internet & social media has changed the game, so I will open up and share my successes, failures, strategy & grind on all that and whatever else I'm asked about.  The nra apparently had been asked much about these issues as well, as they quickly green lighted the idea, and summed up what they thought I had to best offer, and thought most people wanted to hear of my strengths, by giving my panel the name of "Learn how to leverage your product or brand through personal relationships, traditional media, social networking & celebrity!"
Oddly enough, the surprise hard part for me was deciding who should be on my panel!  There are so many amazing restaurant operators, managers, marketing consultants, publicists,..  in chicago, who I would be absolutely honored to share a table w/ at any time, but felt to explain my process of how I go about attacking the above issues, I needed to bring something to the table (literally) that is a true representation of the resources, stories, signs, processes,... that I tap into and consider when doing what I do. Which I guess to sort of some it all up, although will better explained in person, is that (1) I intensely listen to people, through their actions, reactions, story, and all around messaging about their thoughts, wants & needs, and (2) figure out the meaning of it all and use it to deliver value to them, even if not directly from me, through a mix of old & new tactics, that I will gladly share w/ my fellow panelists.
So! Long story short, I made a list of 20 people I thought would be fun & helpful in explaining what I mean by the above, and thankfully, the 1st three on my list quickly agreed to jump on board and it was a go! Of the 1st three, in no particular order, I picked Richard Roeper for his award winning 22 yrs of story about people, society, pop culture & more in the suntimes & beyond, along w/8 years of tv on "ebert & roeper" where in my opinion, like all other areas of his work, he intensely listens, analyzes & translates the stories the world is telling us, in this particular case obviously through film. I picked Alpana singh not only because I think the nra audience would love to interact w/the superstar who paved her own way to becoming the youngest person ever to achieve the rank of master sommelier, but because of her unique position as host of the award winning tv show "check please!" where she facilitates the discussion & expression of what consumers like & dislike about every aspect of the restaurant industry's stories that are told in what they offer to their guests in products, services & experiences.  And to even get closer to magic of delivering story about food experience specifically for the benefit of our nra guests, I chose 12 time beard award winner steve dolinksy, who has been at the top of the food media chain for as long as I can remember on abc tv, wbez-fm, and many other mass communication channels, really focusing on what story is trying to be told by the world through anything & everything related to food, and what all of it means to all of us...
Seems pretty cool & different huh?!? I promise you it will be entertaining & helpful in so many different ways...I know I am there to learn as much as anyone else... so the approach will be interesting... not only will we dive into all of the above, get to address any questions that any of you want, but of equal importance, I picked this crew so we can also get an in depth look at how they evolved (w/social media, interactive marketing,...) w/ their own brands, craft, outreach, routine, strategy,... as they too have faced the same challenges we all are experiencing, as what we are talking about really applies to everyone if you think about it!  So join us! It would be an honor- noon on may 24th , 2010!  For all info go to ....

For all info go towww.restaurant.org/show.

Natalie Merchant for Poetry Center of Chicago

Poetry might not be the first form of entertainment that sells tickets or the most popular artistic method practiced among all, but realize it or not, poetry has been the inspiration and driving force behind countless songs, famous blockbuster movies, high end clothing lines, maybe even the fancy sports car parked in your driveway (or dreams). A special place that houses and nurtures this form of art right in this city is The Poetry Center of Chicago - an independent not-for-profit arts organization that was founded in 1974 and has been in residence at the School of the Art Institute for the past 14 years. Their mission is simple, to "promote poetry through readings, workshops, residencies and arts education, to make poetry more accessible to the general public, to stimulate and encourage young poets, and to advance the careers of poets by offering them professional opportunities."
True to their word, this Saturday - April 27th they are hosting an evening with famous songstress, Natalie Merchant at the Rubloff Auditorium of the Art Institute of Chicago. Natalie will be performing in celebration of her first album in 7 years and for a lucky few people that rsvp first, Merchant is conducting a workshop of how to turn poetry into music, a truly incredible opportunity for lyricists and musicians alike! Tickets are pretty reasonable but for a more personal experience you can purchase VIP tickets and enjoy special seating and access to the post-party with Natalie. All info can be found on www.poetrycenter.org

My role on the new movie "Sin Bin" is sooo Chicago!

Many following me on twitter & facebook buzzed about loving the behind the scenes sharing I did while getting ready to film my part in the new movie "sin bin" earlier this week, so thought I would pass on this video they shot of me right before I went into wardrobe & filmed my scene- I think its hilarious!
As you will see, one of the things that I love about this movie is that it represents local talents coming together to tell a great story, support & build the entertainment & film business in our city, and to just have a ton of fun! The director & writer came home from years in Hollywood to follow their hearts and make a chicago story they love, come to life, actors like jeff garlin from "curb your enthusiasm," who I did a scene with while biting my tongue so not to laugh at how hysterical his improving was, enthusiastically came to contribute w/key roles, and random local talents from all backgrounds (like wilco's jeff tweedy on set the day I was there) are abundantly present & supporting w/whatever they can!
I also have to say, equally impressive are the super nice, hardworking, talented,... film production support crew/industry... and the native Chicagoan producers... that coordinated all the magic... these are the people that keep the stars, scripts, dollars, business, action, fun,... constantly coming back to Chicago for more... so I for one am giving you a huge shoutout today... because you all make it happen... so thank you all for everything you do!

Art Chicago at Merchandise Mart

cp_mainimage

Here's something for all my fellow chicago art lovers out there who love to wander, absorb, and enjoy creative wonderful thoughtful things! Art Chicago, one of my favorite art events of the year, takes place at the Merchandise Mart from April 30 - May 3, with an Opening Preview on April 29th. This celebration has been a mainstay in the art community nationwide w/ 30 editions over the years... bringing together the most passionate artists, collectors, curators, and people who just simply love to enjoy an awesome visual show. It ranges from contemporary to modern art, from galleries all over the world, new and established, coming together to preview art in a variety of different forms. Paintings, photography, video, sculptures, cool instillations and more...there is something for everyone.

Another super cool element of Art Chicago, in my opinion, involves added expert panel discussions and seminars taking place on site for all attendees, provided by Converge Chicago. The Converge Chicago advisory committee includes Franklin Sirmans, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; James Rondeau, Art Institute of Chicago; Julie Rodrigues-Widholm, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Hamza Walker, Renaissance Society; and Anthony Huberman, Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis.  Some local galleries of note that will be exhibiting are Judy Saslow Gallery, Ken Saunders Gallery, Packer Schopf Gallery , Linda Warren Gallery, David Weinberg Gallery, Roy Boyd Gallery, Russell Bowman Art Advisory, and my personal favorite, carrie secrist gallery!

You must wander, absorb, and enjoy... check out .. www.artchicago.com for more info!

Cubs Opener Party Monday! Wrigleyville will be NUTS!

It's a party every summer in wrigleyville, but w/new owners of the cubs, not having the best weather last year, and it being our 1st cubs opening day celebration at the new rockit Wrigley, I get the feeling my team & I will be immersed in extra fun this summer in wrigleyville... and we hope you will be a part of it too!
I'm hearing 1st of all that the biggest "do not miss" party day is opening day, this Monday (4/12)! Rockit Wrigley for example has b96 (96.3fm) airing live from Wrigley's cubs opener on our patio from 10a-2p! you for sure should tune in to hear the energy, or better yet, with or w/o tix, just come & join us! If you do, you could win "impossible to find" tix for the opening game, concert seats to rihanna, cool gear, gift certificates,... trust me, insane giveaways w/insane parties! You just need to be there!
And as for us, we are just gonna keep the party going thru game 2 (weds 4/14)! Somehow we have the honor of being chosen as the actual location for the official post game radio show "Cubs 10th Inning on the WGN Cubs Radio Network!" yes, you have to turn in again, but if you or anyone you know is going to the game, or is near the neighborhood, there is only one way to be a part of the culture, fun, energy & celebration, and its to be live w/us!
in just the 1st two games of the year next week, looks to me like are going to have a great summer.. all you have to do is jump in and live it up! If we can help in anyway, whether you need our private party room that looks directly across the street at Wrigley (click here for pics & info), a table reservation, or just anything... email Kris@RockitRanch.com! For other radio fun, Click here for a fun quick clip of me live yesterday on wgn giving away killer stuff on Michigan ave in the rain- and answering questions about how we all started in the biz- haha! and then click here to enjoy that new commercial I tweeted about yesterday when in the editing room- just telling it how it is I guess- notice us laughing about the 9a-2a party opening day- just ridiculous!

Lollapalooza Chicago 2010 Lineup Announced by C3!

Last night at sunda I got to catch up w/my old buddy Charlie jones, one of the 3 c's in "c3" that's responsible for the ever successful outdoor summer music festival in our sweet home chicago, "lollapalooza!" (check this video & you will see how much fun we have w/it!) I first met him when the mayor brought me, & a couple others like Charlie, into his office years ago to think of new ways to make summers fests in chicago even better, and I've been impressed w/their group ever since! Year after year they bring enormous talent & investment to our city... so whenever I see him like the other night, I am sure to let him know i appreciate it.
Speaking of appreciation, i also let him know I was psyched about all the buzz surrounding their ridiculously hardcore line up this year before it was even released! we laughed about how each year he can never keep his line ups a secret and joked that from now on the 3 c's are just going to keep it to themselves... hilarious! And of course, I wrapped it up like a big nerd saying "I can't believe you have lady gaga! can you intro me?!" he says, "sure if you support parkways foundation event night before." I say "done! really?" He says, "no, but support anyway." Again, Hilarious... but I agree, we all should support anyway... so sharing all the lolla and parkways info with you now...

Chicagoan Michelle Williams in "Chicago" on Broadway!

If you follow me on twitter, you know I flew out to nyc this weekend to support my long time friend michelle williams (of "destiny's child, pic of us above backstage), watching her light up broadway in the production of "chicago!"  not only was it super cool to support a local Chicagoan friend making it back (she starred her in "aida") to the most significant theatre district in the world, (not to mention that I sat w/ her other friends beyonce and jay z!), but it was extra special that the story she was telling was a true one centered around another chicagoan's story!
michelle played roxie whose story was based on the real story of chicagaon Beulah Annan who in 1924 was accused of killing the "intruder" Harry Kalstedt. it became a front-page story in the Chicago Tribune when reporter Maurine Watkins realized the sensational appeal her personality could draw through her tongue-in-cheek reports about roxie's supposed pregnancy used to speed up the trial w/a sleek Hollywood like lawyer who helped define the media frenzy and the acquittal.  Later Tribune reporter Maurine decided to turn her experience with Chicago's famed murder-row darling into a comedy titled CHICAGO that reached Broadway in 1926. A film version was created two years later and a second film version, "Roxie Hart," starred Ginger Rogers in 1942. (more info on www.chicagothemusical.com)
After I came out of the production raving about michelle's performance, many friends on facebook and twitter asked me how long it was playing... The answer is that this great "chicago" story will probably always be playing somewhere, but my advice is to do what ever you can to see Michelle in it as roxie!  She was absolutely amazing as always!  I'm really proud of her... now unfortunately her Broadway run ends April 13 (get out here if can!), but you can catch her in it in los angeles from April 20-May 9! don't miss her!

Chicago : The Comedy Breeder

a couple weeks ago... I came home from cutting the ribbon at the nightclub & bar show in vegas w/old friend dan aykroyd, to have a meeting at sunda where I see harold ramis entertaining chevy chase for dinner, at which time I'm told I landed a part in a new movie filming here called "sin bin" where I'm in a super funny scene w/jeff garlin... and it hits me, this city isn't "2nd" to anyone when for yet another category... and that's being a comedy breeder!  It was obvious that the random combination of all these amazing talents are just a small example of what its like in this city where we are blessed beyond belief w/ major comedic street cred having given birth to some of the best talent in comedy celebrated around the world for decades!
Even creepier of a coincidence, I was pitched with doing a very grassroots comedy open mic night at one of my places the very next morning!  I originally thought that there are probably better homes for an open comedy night like our infamous comedy clubs that I love like zanies, improv,... but then thought, undiscovered raw talent can be discovered anywhere in this great town, and if truly a supporter of all emerging talent in chicago, I need to atleast give them a shot- So I am!
Tonite at Rockit Wrigley, from 7p-9p, before we start with live karaoke, we are inviting some of the best comedians around the city trying out their newest material, along with some nervous newcomers who will make their historic debuts as we are encouraging rookie comics who aren't booked for shows to get in some more stage time now with us!  Now that I think about it, comedy and karaoke??? Hmmmmm... could be the next big thing!??!  all they need is you for is to come join us to hear them out so they can just have the chance!!!!!  See you there!
