ChicagoNow Radio: the Frugalista challenge

Amy Guth is digital news editor for the Tribune's books section and blog and is co-host of ChicagoNow Radio on News 720 WGN alongside Alex Quigley. Also? Author, adventuress and grade-a sass-mouth.

On ChicagoNow Radio on WGN 720, my co-host Alex Quigley and I welcomed Carrie Kirby the Frugalista and Lisa from Fantabulously Frugal in Chicago in one of the segments. I think both blogs are interesting (and coupon-culture fascinating, really), but admittedly, I don't make any real effort to follow their advice. I buy what I need. Things cost what they cost.

Don't get me wrong, I love getting a deal. In fact, I feel as if I've "won" when I apply some Google-fu to my search for an item and find the best price. But, I really only make that effort for high-ticket purchases. Not for my regular day-to-day shopping. And, admittedly, I secretly cringe when I see mega-coupon people in line ahead of me in the supermarket, and tend to think the whole process couldn't possibly be worth the effort.

Or is it? That's what I'm going to find out.

For the next 30 days, I'm going to apply the advice of Frugalista and Fantabulousy Frugal in Chicago to my shopping. I'll check in right here on the ChicagoNow Radio blog to let you know what's what, and maybe even say hello from a guest post on one of their blogs.

Mind you, I have no idea what I'm doing, no idea where to start and I have no idea what to expect of the challenge. My outsider guess is that it will prove too time-consuming for my very busy schedule, that it will be a lot of effort for very little reward and that it will be too focused on the have-nots, instead of the haves.

But, maybe it will be none of those things, so I'm going to reserve judgment until 30 days from now.

Here goes nothing.

Well, with that enthusiastic battle cry, we're off to a great start!

With your quest in mind, I think I am going to do a post about deciding to be more frugal, and what decisions and plans need to be made before taking the plunge. Like, what are my goals -- do I want to stop spending beyond my means or am I saving for a specific purchase or trying to lay away an emergency fund?

I'll post about your challenge with a link to this post soon. I'm excited to have a disciple!
