A Beady Bash: Mardi Gras Tonight at Double Door

It's my job to write about Chicago and all of its people, places and things. If it's new and it's cool, I'm checking it out.

Mojo and the Bayou Gypsies, headliners of tonight's Mardi Gras Ball at Double Door.

What better place to return a necklace borrowed from a friend than at tonight's bead-slinging Mardi Gras Ball hosted by Thrillist at Bucktown's Double Door? Especially when the necklace in question is strung with golden skulls whose hinged jaws chatter so pleasingly?

Damen + Division jewelry designer and photographer extraordinaire Sonia Barrett loaned me said necklace (it accessorizes my gym outfit as I write this blog) to wear to an event at the Lyric Opera last weekend, and though I was obviously hoping she'd forget, she does indeed want it back.

"Where should we meet for a drink?" Sonia wrote, when requesting the merry skulls' return.

As it happened, I had just received an e-mail promising the following entertainments at the Mardi Gras Ball: a hula-hoop artist, stilt walkers, a diabolist, a face-painter, a contortionist, Cajun grub from Sheffield's, music by Mojo and the Bayou Gypsies and much, much more. It sounded far too, well, thrilling to resist, so we're totally going. See you there around 7.

Thinking ahead to the weekend, dare I mention the V-word? I have reason to believe this year's Valentine's Day could not and will not approach the agony of last year's (I attended my boss's engagement party solo, and, while there, received a text containing the cancelation of a date planned for later that evening).

One takes comfort in knowing there are backup plans available. Particularly intriguing is the Voodoo Valentine's Bash, a combo anti-V-Day and Mardi Gras soiree to be held this Saturday night at Jake Melnick's Corner Tap in Streeterville. My invite to the party arrived complete with a brightly dressed voodoo doll, who has been ghoulishly staring at me from her perch on my desk while inviting me to "hex my ex."

I'm a tad uncomfortable hexing anyone no matter how much they deserve it, so I'll probably just keep her around for decorative purposes. All who bring pictures of their exes to the party at Jake Melnick's will receive voodoo dolls of their very own, and will presumably be instructed to burn the sorry old photos while sticking the dolls with black pins (for evil). Perfectly therapeutic, wouldn't you say?

Voodoo Valentine's Bash at Jake Melnick's Corner Tap, 41 E. Superior St.

I plan to be in a more romantic mood tomorrow, so check back for a couples'-friendly Valentine's Day option or two. xo
