The Band Played On: Hairbanger's Ball tonight at Uncle Fatty's

Amalie Drury

It's my job to write about Chicago and all of its people, places and things. If it's new and it's cool, I'm checking it out.

Cover band Hairbanger's Ball, tonight's headliner at Uncle Fatty's Winter Music Fest.

Remember that sweet, soaring flute solo in the 1992 Guns N' Roses heartbreaker "November Rain?" I do. "November Rain" was released at the beginning of my estimable high-school flute-playing career. I watched the wedding-themed video and the subsequent MTV Video Music Awards performance on VHS at least once a day, and I always wished I had the sheet music and my own cover band so I could recreate the song's unmatched raw emotion. Actually, what I really wanted was for Axl to call me and mention he was looking to replace the band's flute player.

In related news, I'm judging an Absolut vodka bartending competition tonight at Uncle Fatty's Rum Resort in Lincoln Park, and the event is being held in conjunction with the bar's weeklong Winter Music Fest. Tonight's headliner is Chicago cover band Hairbanger's Ball, and I am hoping against hope that they play "November Rain" and dedicate it to yours truly. Dear Hairbanger's Ball: You are officially invited to take the hint.

Stay tuned for an update on the results of the bartending competition tomorrow, or, just come out tonight and test the drinks with me. Here's the info:

Uncle Fatty's Rum Resort, 2833 N. Sheffield Ave.
Doors open at 7PM
Free Absolut cocktails from 7PM to 8PM
"Absolut Best Bartender Competition" at 8PM, with free tiki cocktail tastes for patrons
Hairbanger's Ball performs on Uncle Fatty's stage at 9PM

November Rain by Guns N' Roses... Great song! Too bad the band didn't play it last night! The guitarist even plays a few guitars like Slash and could've played those melodic guitar solos well!
