Headbands-New York Style

As young girls we grow up wearing headbands, why should we stop? Headbands are not just for elementry school girls anymore, but for "grown ups" too. A headband can potentially put the exclamation point on your outfit, creating a playful and girlish air.  For a city that loves to be extravagant, many New York women are spiffing up their outfits with a complementary headband.

Headbands are in style! Anywhere from the classic headband like Leighton Meester in Gossip Girl to the hippy headband Micsha Barton wears. Classic headbands are plain, patterned or colorful and can be accented with a jewel or bow. The hippy headbands are those worn around the middle of the forehead. However, the most popular headband I've seen in NYC is the sparkly braided band like Natiale Portman wears. Whatever you headband style is, you are not too old to wear it!

Street Fashion: Is 2 always Better than 1?

beyonce_swimsuit_picture-1253557581.jpg
In the case of swimwear celebrities have proven that a 2 piece swimsuit does not always have to be better than 1.  We have seen celebrities from Beyonce to the Kardashians make a 1 piece just as classy and sexy at the same time.  We can all benefit from a 1 piece as it can cover up  and hide our flaws.
This summer season has had a slow start, but memorial day has definitely proven that summer is amongst us.  I expect metallics, prints, bright colors, cut outs, and bandeau's to be the most popular trend.  One of my most popular trends is mix matching the 2 pieces.  So don't be afraid this summer, show your style through matching a print top with a metallic top.

Kiddie Botox: NEVER InFashion

8-year-old-botox-pageant-1.jpeg

I was horrified to hear the news of the 8-year-old beauty pageant contestant whose mother is injecting her with botox to alter her appearance. As a teenage athlete, I applaud companies, such as Dove and Nike, in the beauty and fashion industries that support a positive body image to young girls. Also controversial, is the new ad by Sketchers aimed at very young girls, starting at the age of 7, to firm their butt and thighs. Athletes, such as Maria Sharapova, Danica Patrick and Misty May, show how fashionable it is to be healthy and love your body. Young girls should be encouraged to flex their muscles and not freeze them with botox. What do you think?

Bohemian Drop & Chandelier Earrings

Screen shot 2011-05-25 at 10.43.15 PM.png

Doesn't Kate Hudson look gorgeous in her white halter maxi dress and turquoise chandelier earrings?  You can't go wrong with a lightweight sun dress this season, the "hippie" or "bohemian" look is still in!  Accessorize with some teardrop shaped or chandelier earrings for the all-out goddess look.

My favorite style of these long earrings are by Hive and Honey.  Check out the Orange Beaded Earrings!  One of the most extreme pairs I found by Tarina Tarantino are extra large Skull Drop Earrings, an adorable choice for the punk rock fashionista!

With earrings as large and detailed as these chandeliers, make sure not to OVER accessorize.  A simple bangle set of bracelets or a large ring is plenty, especially if you are sporting a stylish print maxi dress.   There's no need for a bulky necklace, these earrings will do the job!

Street Fashion: The Red Head Trend

red_hair.jpg
We've seen it before in a much more conservative way, but now we have an explosion of the Red Heads.  It has definitely been seen before, but perhaps not as popular as it has become now.  From the more classic look of Julia Roberts in the 90's to the more modern Rhianna of today's youth.  They have made it a trend that we see both between other celebrities and the everyday person.  When worn with the right look you can go from chic in red to more of a rock look.  It can go great with a variety of skin complexions just as the right tone of red can portray a different image as the darker red is more of my favorite or perhaps to suggest a settle change try streaks of red.  The red hair works great from big curls to long locks, color is in.

Summer Shoes: Espadrilles for Men and Women

Screen shot 2011-05-19 at 12.17.53 AM.png

MYMU Espadrilles for Men & Women

There's nothing more unflattering than funky, un-pedicured toes on guys and girls.  If you're slacking on a trip to the nail salon, skip the flip flops and pick up a pair of espadrilles.  These unisex shoes with lightweight canvas and roped soles come in all kinds of styles, even in closed toe wedges for girls!  They've been around since the 14th century, and are still trendy.

One of my favorite brands is MYMU by Gabriela Lanardonne.  Inspired by stylish locals on her trips to Buenos Aires as a child,  theses espadrilles were designed for formal wear - believe it or not - yet they are a beautiful take on the upscale cotton sneaker.

Buy a pair and support a great cause with Tom's espadrilles, who gives one pair of Tom's shoes to a child in need for each pair you purchase.  Guys, you too can benefit from a great pair of these casual summer slip-ons, check out the Tom's Kenya Striped Cardones.  So, give these comfortable urban shoes a try and enjoy the warm weather - if it ever comes to Chicago!

Trend Spotting: Mini vs. Maxi

The age old question of Spring fashion is back, Mini v. Maxi? Celebrities are pressed with the question every time they leave the house. In the most recent Gossip Girl episode Blake Lively, aka Serena, wears a micro mini bandage skirt and in Sex and the City the lovely ladies work colorful Maxi dresses on their tropical get away. So which one is best for Spring? I personally think it depends on the occasion and of course your body type. Maxi dresses look great on most body types. I love pairing them with big 70's inspired bangles and platforms. Some stars even like wearing Maxi dresses while pregnant and why not? They are comfortable and flattering. When wearing a micro mini I think that it is important to understand proportions and of course your body type! I like the way Fergie wore her mini dress with a long boyfriend blazer. What do you think? What is your favorite way to wear a Mini or Maxi dress?

Denim Trends for Spring/Summer 2011

Megan Fox in Henry & Belle Denim

Color is certainly everywhere on the fashion runways for spring. And, denim is no exception. White is the big news, but certainly colors are also available. Just a note of caution when it comes to wearing white. If you're bigger on the bottom, like Kim Khardashian or Jennifer Lopez, skip the color or wear a print tunic to move the eye up to your face. I love wearing white denim with a khaki safari jacket for a more monotone look & a hint of a coverup. What is your favorite way to wear color?

Also, my intern recently got her hands on a pair of jeans by Henry & Belle. The "Ideal Super Stretch Skinny" by Henry & Belle is very similar to a pair of jeggings. They sit low on the hips and are very form fitting. She loves them.

The 1960's and 1970's Bohemian styles are back in fashion for this spring and summer.

Color Explosion For Spring: From Top to Bottom

heading pic.jpg

One of the top trends for Spring fashion is color, lots and lots of color. As seen on the street and on celebrities, like Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, color is everywhere. The five main colors seen out are different hues of pink, blue, orange, yellow, and earth tones. But this trend extends farther than just clothing, it can also apply to hair color.

In the slideshow below are examples of each color trend and of some celebrities following the hair color trend. In the photo above the designers are from left, Peter Som, Versace, Burberry Prorsum, DKNY.

Celebrity Fashion Styles: The Chunky Necklace

leighton-meester-chanel-necklace.jpg

A chunky necklace is a standout accessory every woman needs to have in their wardrobe. Jessica Alba, Leighton Meester, and Oliva Palermo are just a few celebrities spotted with great statement necklaces this year. They add pizazz, style, and intrigue to any outfit. Even during the summer, when it's hot and sunny, it's always nice to dress up a light summer dress or casual outfit with an eye-popping necklace. Will you be wearing your statement jewelry this spring/summer?

Spring 2011 Trends: White

white clothing.jpg

The absence of color is the way to go this Spring. There is just something so pure and refreshing about the color white. It's a nice change of pace from all the dreary black from last season. Breathe some life into your wardrobe with airy and light pieces inspired by the runway. And remember, white goes well with just about anything.

Usher: Are Guys in Hats Sexy?

hat-usher_0.jpg

It's hard to classify a modern man in a hat as having a bad sense of style.  There's something special about a man in a hat, and Usher sure knows how to pull it off well.  Take the character Donald Draper (actor John Hamm) from AMC's Mad Men for example.  Back in the 1950's to early 1960's, every man wore a hat.  Hats, especially the popular Fedora style, marked a man as having poise, class, and most attractively - confidence.  Fedoras aren't just for special occasions or a dress suit accessory, you can wear it with a t-shirt and jeans.  For a more casual look try a flat cap or a beanie, but steer clear of the boring baseball cap!

Usher is a fabulous style icon - take some tips from the gallery below featuring Usher, Justin Timberlake, David Beckham, and other celebrities on how to pair the right hat with the right outfit.  A great hat paired with a stylish outfit is sure to make the ladies swoon!

Trends: Socks and Sandals?

SOCKSlady.jpg

It's always been a HUGE taboo to wear socks with sandals. However at the Fall 2011 preview at Fashion week, Prada showed tons of models wearing tall, stiff socks with closed and open sandals - both heels and flats.    Gone are the days when your grandmother's frumpy slippers and socks look made you cringe; you just may find yourself weeding through her drawers to find a wool pair to borrow!

Rihanna has been seen sporting this cozy-toed look on the red carpet.  Socks can even be sexy! Try pairing pumps with a short, ankle height lace pattern sock.   For a warmer look, grab a pair of over-the-knee knitted socks and scrunch them down over a pair of winter wedge ankle boots.    Socks are a cheap way to accessorize an otherwise forgotten option - instead of buying a new pair of shoes, mix it up and buy a few new pairs of funky socks instead!

Fashion Week and Clutches: Smaller Bags are Back

GYI0063384419_0.jpg

BCBG. New York Fashion Week handbag trends from the runway for fall 2011Credit: Getty Images

If you're wiped out from carrying around heavy over-sized handbags the past few seasons, we've got some good news! This Fashion Week in New York, designers sent a surplus of Clutches down the runway.  So, if you're in the market for a new bag, consider lightening the load and go for a stylish clutch bag instead.

There's still a way to carry all your favorite personal items and fit them in a clutch - not all clutches are miniature! Although  Kim Kardashian usually sports over-the-top handbags, she's been seen with a cute Balenciaga Giant Clutch. The "Oversized Clutch" is a fantastic way to compromise style without losing the storage for your everyday essentials.

Check out the Book of the Month & Daily News Clutches from Kate Spade.  These clutches are designed to look like books of Classic Literature right off the shelves.  Just because your bag is smaller, it doesn't mean your style has to be!   Natalie Portman carried the "Lolita" clutch at the premier of Black Swan last Fall.

Spring 2011 Fashion: The Return of Bell Bottoms

bellbottomsspring2011tr.png

It's back to the 1970's with statement pants. Say goodbye to skinny jeans and hello to bell bottoms! I know everybody loves to show off their body in tight skinny jeans but believe me, bell bottoms are just as fun. They seem to give everyone an elegant look while adding length to the body. Modernize the look with sky high platform heels and a loose fitting blouse. You can't go wrong this spring if you have a pair of great bell bottoms and some high wooden platform sandals. Even though you may be used to skinny jeans, be daring enough to embrace the 70's all over again to take part in an era that is full of interesting styles.

Spring Fashion: A Pop of Color

g-tdy-110209-michelle-930a.jpg

With a dose of warmer weather in Chicago, women are beginning to think spring by adding a sprinkle of color to their wardrobe. Whether it's a colorful bag, scarf, shoes, or even hair highlights, we've been seeing bursts of color popping up everywhere. Even Michelle Obama recently was seen on the Today Show wearing a black and white polka dotted dress with some yellow heels and a pink/orange belt, both excellent pops of color. So is all of this wishful thinking or is spring just around the corner?

In or Out: 70's Glam

sonia-rykiel.jpg

Boogie Night's doesn't hold a light to these 70's inspired looks. Peace, love and 70's glam have been flooding the runways recently. From bell-bottoms to haute-couture, it seems like it is everywhere. I personally love the rompers, wedges and wide-leg pants. The clothing from that era is extremely flattering, if worn right. When wearing wide leg jeans and wedges you have to remember to keep it skinny on top, otherwise you wind up looking like a bag. Celebrities are flaunting the trend on the street and on the red carpet. Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway and Leighton Meester all wore gowns inspired by the 70's to the Golden Globes this year. Sonia Rykiel's lines are always inspired from the era. She uses block and floral patterns paired with updated silhouettes to keep the look fresh. Marc Jacobs does the same thing with more of an authentic 1970's silhouette. This trend is spreading quickly, just in time for spring! What do you think about the fashions from the era?

Emilio Pucci's Spring 2011 collection brought a sense of excitement to Milan Fashion week with sexy shapes, psychedelic prints and lace-up boots. Under the creative direction of Peter Dundas, Pucci designs aren't scared of showing a little skin or attitude as shown by the plunging necklines and high hems. The outfits were all accessorized with satchel bags, bandanas and understated jewelry. Is Pucci's Spring 2011 collection luring you in?

SpiritHoods: Animal Hats

AnimalHats.jpg

Living in Chicago, I know how cold the weather can get. Everyone who is smart, will leave their house with a hat on. However, instead of the usual trapper hats, I've been seeing a lot of people wearing animal hats. Mostly hats with cat ears. The more popular ones are called SpiritHoods. They seem to be a new trend amoung celebrities as well as people living downtown. Khloe Kardashian, Pink, and Vanessa Hudgens have all been seen wearing SpiritHoods. These furry animal hats come with paws (hand warmers) that extend from the hat. SpiritHoods rage from $139-$119. What do you think? Will you be seen sporting an animal inspired hat, or are you more traditional?

See SpiritHoods.com if you're interested in purchasing one of these fuzzy hats.

Barrettes and Bobby Pins : Hair Styles

imagesCANVYWF4.jpg
Barrettes and bobby pins were once considered the accessory of little old ladies and little kids. However, they are now seen on teens, celebrities and the spring fashion runways! Everyone is showing up in either barrettes or bobby pins and looking very chic. According to the Wall Street Jounal article, "Barrettes: Dowdy No More," Spring 2011 trends include:

  • Hand crafted bobby pins or barrettes
  • Barrettes that pin back loose wind-swept side parts
  • Crystallized/artistic looking barrettes at the base of a pony tail

People can look innocent, sophisticated, and artistic while still being chic at the same time. Rihanna likes to wear very big, crystallized barrettes on the side of her hair. Are barrettes too innocent looking for you, or are you willing to try to bling up your hair?

Street Fashion : What are YOU wearing?

street.jpg

It's hard to dress well while keeping warm in this insane Chicago weather, but it seems to always get done. As I was walking around the streets of downtown Chicago, Wicker park, and my school (The Illinois Institute of Art), I realized that it's hard to find someone who doesn't have something trendy on. With stores like Forever 21 and H&M, we are in a world of fast fashion. It is easy for anyone to become trendy in an instant because the trends keep pouring in at cheap prices.

As I was people watching, I noticed the majority of Chicagoans had long black winter coats or leather jackets. Uggs, Hunter rain boots, or military styled shoes are by far the most popular shoes this winter as well as long, oversized scarves and interesting hats. Amoung all these trends, I did happen to find some unique pieces such as oversized hair bows and small scarves. A lot of people have style in Chicago, and a lot don't. After seeing so many oversized scarves, the little ones tied tightly around the neck seem the newest. As Barbara says, "it is a breath of fresh air to see something new after constantly seeing the same trends over and over again."

Even celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and the Olsen twins are sporting similar looks to people here in Chicago. It seems as though celebrities and consumers alike are all revolving around the same fashion trends. It's interesting that no matter what status you are, trends are trends and that's that. Are you out in the winter with your Uggs or Hunter boots?

Victoria Beckham : Handbag Collection- A Replacement for the Birkin?

"24 Hours in the life of Victoria," doesn't that sound lovely? That allurting theme is the central focus around Victoria Beckham's handbag collection. Victoria Beckham, former Spice girl and wife of David Beckham, has started designing handbags in addition to her clothing designs! Victoria Beckam's first collection will offer 6 styles, prices ranging from $1,800- $13,950 in many different finishes.

Possessing hundreds of "IT" handbags already, including almost 100 Birkin Bags, Victoria Beckham is attempting to ultimately replace the costly Birkin bags with her own unique designs, inspired by Ms. Beckham's sophisticated, polished look. Her lovely handbags will be available at Neiman Marcus Los Angeles, Bergdorf Goodman, and net-a-porter.com. Her structured, classic designs will soon take the world by storm as every celebrity and consumer who can afford her handbags, will feel themselves urging for a Posh experience.

With original Hermes Birkin Bags costing anywhere from $5,300 to $50,000 and up, consumers will be sure to ditch the Birkin and get with the Beckham. People will re-evalute just how much they are willing to spend on a designer handbag. According to Instyle.com, Victoria was heard saying, "A Beckham can replace your Birkin." So what do you think? Can a Beckham replace YOUR Birkin?

Spring Collections : Alexander McQueen's Legacy Lives On!

00160m.jpg

The once talented, innovative, strange, intriguing man that's Lady Gaga's favorite designer is...

 ALEXANDER MCQUEEN!

Alexander McQueen was known for his outrageous fashion shows and constant unique fashion sense. With his armadillo shoes and crazy cut out outfits that Lady Gaga is known for wearing, his fashion label is an inspiration and attracts the eyes of many men and women all over the world. For Spring 2011 RTW, McQueen's legacy lives on in the name of Sarah Burton, the new creative director for Alexander McQueen. In the collection, the fashion pieces revolve all around our Earth. Through notes, it was written that "McQueen explained that he had been pondering Charles Darwin, the survival of the fittest, and the deleterious results of industrialization on the natural world."

imagesCAB3ODQY.jpg

Burton stayed with McQueen's signature frock coats, skinny-leg pants, and hourglass silhouettes, but the wood-print tailoring was much more fluid. She is the perfect person to grab hold of McQueen's legacy and make it prosper and survive for years to come. Bright, multicolored allover prints, leggings, and cocoon dresses were a big hit--a general trend emerging from London's young designers. Sarah Burton's goal is to satisfy consumers and to potentially sell this Spring. This collection, with its color, attention to detail, prints, leggings, cocoon dresses, ankle-wrapped shoes, and eased-up tailoring, looks like it'll be one of the best selling collections yet. More to get excited about for spring! We'll see if these new creative designs last in the eyes of the consumers...

Spring 2011 : Marc Jacobs

Anything Marc Jacobs touches seems to turn to gold. Not only does he have his own lines: Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, he is also the creative director for Louis Vuitton. He is the go-to guy for stylish, sophisticated pieces with an edgy twist. Anyone who's anybody is sporting something from Marc Jacobs, especially this spring. Whether it's his more affordable line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, or his pricey line, Marc Jacobs, celebrities as well as highschool and college kids can't get enough of the brand.

For spring 2011, it's all about going back to the 1970's with frizzy hair, wide-legged pants, gold glittering platform shoes and oversized flower corsages as seen on Style.com. For spring, it's all about color, prints, halter dresses, seductive cuts/slits and yes, HOT PANTS. I will definitely be around sporting some tight short shorts this spring/summer and can't wait to see what others are going to try to pull off. Say goodbye to cleavage and hello to legs and butt! Holiday Must Haves: Glitz and Accessories!

H Sparkle.png

This Holiday Season is all about the Shimmer and Shine! Bright colors and metallic jackets are stand out pieces for Holiday parties. Even if you are someone who believes less is more, there are some great textured pieces for you! If you are determined to stick with all black, add a lace top or velvet blazer. If you really want to add some sparkle slick your hair back and add a jeweled hair piece. Faux fur and cashmere socks are fun accessories that have been a hit this season and I believe they are great to try for a daring look. My favorite Holiday look is from Alice and Olivia. Their 'Stacey Poof Skirt Party Dress' looks amazing paired with lace up booties and a faux fur stole. You can find more chic holiday looks at Intermix and Shopbop. Man Up Monday: Men's Fashion from "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps"

MNS.png
Gone are the suspenders and the contrasting collared shirts seen in the 1987 movie Wall Street. In the current version I love the spread collar white shirts, pocket squares and fitted vests that Gordon Gekko wears with great style. It takes a certain attitude to carry off this accessory, which not all men embrace. When I was Jerry Springer's Image Consultant he disliked wearing vests because it probably reminded him of some old guy. Of course we know many of the cool rappers love this trend along with Roger Sterling in "Mad Men." Watches are another accessory that signal power and are very elegant in the movie with the appearance of a Vacheron Constantin, Cartier and IWC watches. In the Wall Street Journal, Ellen Mirojnick, the costume designer says, " A guy's watch is equivalent of a Birkin bag." The character Jake Moore wears six custom suits which Mirojnick claims were $6,500 each. I loved all the clothes in the movie on the Wall Street guys but the one scene at the Metropolitan Museum, with a focus on all the women's jewelry, took my breath away. Of course the Oscar de la Rentas, Marchesas, Vera Wangs, Guccis, Puccis were beautiful also. Don't miss, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleep," another excellent Oliver Stone movie.

More Emmy Fashion!

I am continuing to revel in all the red carpet ravishment from Sunday's 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards. Of course, every magazine and blog has chosen its best and worst looks, and I also had a few stars whose Emmy style I absolutely adored... and some others, though I always try to find something to appreciate in everyone's fashion choices, that I just could not get on board with!

I was in love with Sofia Vergara's sexy and radiant yellow sweetheart gown. Her long locks and large gold earings did the job in completing the look. Another favorite was Anna Paquin, who wore the late Alexander McQueen's design with sophistication and grace.

Then there are the inevitable few who either cannot seem to pull off the daring style they have chosen, or simply should have opted for an entirely different look. This was the case with January Jones, who I felt just did not carry the shocking blue Atelier Versace she wore, and with Heidi Klum, who, in spite of her gorgeous legs, ought to have donned a more elegant - and maybe longer - dress!

And, as always, I had to make note of a few patterns that caught my eye. Check out the slide show below to see what beautiful trends were visible that night. I'm sure we'll continue to see these throughout the season!

Fall Fashion Trend: Heroes of Combat

rag & bone2.jpg

Rag & Bone Fall 2010 RTW / Photo: style.com

With the U.S. troops returning from Iraq and our paying tribute to those who fought for our country, why not celebrate their heroism with fashion! Throughout history, times of war have always led to military looks filtering from the battlefield to streets, and times have not changed that much. Fall's collections are replete with soldier styles, from pea coats, bomber jackets, and cargo pants to simple khakhi and olive green minimalist designs. And, of course, military fashion is never complete without the customary and oh-so-sexy CAMO! Check out more of this trend below.

Fall Fashion Trend: Sparkle and Bling!

isaac mizrahi.jpg

Isaac Mizrahi Fall 2010 RTW

Just like a little girl, I am absolutely taken by sparkly things. And if those things involve fashion, then say no more, I'm sold! Sequins, glittery fabrics, and other luminous little details have been with us for a few seasons now, but they are not disappearing this fall. While some designers continued to send dresses covered in shimmer down the catwalk, others chose smaller elements to add a dash of dazzle to their garments. Check out the array of sparkling looks below and decide whether this is a trend you're happy to see linger through the next few months... and possibly longer!

Fall Fashion: Texture

thakoon.jpg

After a summer of light fabrics to get through the sweltering heat, fall brings in a range of heavy and elaborate textured looks. From fur and chunky knits to embellishments and micro-pleating, many of the styles that traipsed down the runway featured a multiple sensory experience - designs that are not just great to look at, but exciting to feel too! Just like the mix of textures in Thakoon's jacket (above), designers were in agreement about this touchable trend of the season! Click below to check out more of these looks.

Red Hot on the Runway

red small.jpg

This fall, amidst the neutrals and muted hues, one color will not be blending in with the rest. While the nudes and pale peachy creams from the spring and summer will surely linger through the autumn along with olive green military looks and even deep purples, the hot color of the season is a bold, luscious red. And this trend can take you from day to night to later that night... the daring splash of color spices up suits and outerwear while giving a classic sexiness to cocktail and evening dresses that never fails if you're trying to turn heads. What do you think, will you be sporting fall's racy red while the streets are full of more hushed autumnal shades?

Sweet Dreams: Norma Kamali's first Sleepwear Line for Walmart

NK Sale Items.png

Norma Kamali will be adding sleepwear to her collection of clothing & swimwear at Walmart in October. Yes, for those fashion history buffs, Norma Kamali was one of the first designers to use sweat shirt fabric for daytime clothing back in the late 70's / 80's with her collection called OMO. I think it was around the time of her divorce and OMO stood for on my own. She continues to inspire to this day at very affordable prices at Walmart for a whole new audience and for those that still follow her from the past. I would definitely wear some of the pieces of outerwear! Check below also for the original story:

Street Fashion: Who wears short shorts?

shorts 13.png

If you're still pondering the decades-old question "Who wears short shorts?" (and who isn't?), the answer is here: Chicago. With the rise in temperature, it seems lengths are rising on women's clothing on Chicago streets also. From bike riding, lunching with friends, shopping around town to just enjoying the weather. Sometimes even men wear short shorts, and of course celebs are continuing to raise hemlines also from short shorts to skirts and dresses.
Check out more photos below of Chicago women, and celebrities wearing summer shorts.

C/FAN Preview at the Dubhe Carreno Gallery

Christina & her proud mom jpg.jpg

I must admit that I haven't attended a Gen Art event in several years but couldn't wait to attend the C/FAN fashion show featuring the talented new designer Christina Fan at the Dubhe Carreno Gallery. It was a packed crowd of some the cities' most hip and stylish that came to support the show of this former Northwestern Graduate who put a career in law on the back burner to follow her passion to design clothing. The crowd was dressed in lots of slouchy knit hats, bowties and outstanding chain jewelry from FAB STUDIO. Excellent hors d'oeuvres were served of wonderful cheeses from August Grocery Store & samples from Via Carducci along with drinks. Of course the fashions were the highlight of the night with models with makeup of blackened eye sockets which helped to place the focus on the clothing. We saw outstanding tunic tops, jackets and leggings. One of my personal favorites was a deep v-neck sleeveless top with a sheer insert that brought back the sensuous look of those worn by the movie stars of the 40's. It will be fun to watch the progress of C/FAN as the collection continues to grow stronger each season....congrats to Christina. You can also find some of Christina's excellent fashion reports/posts on my blog.

Street Style Thursday: Hollis Sigler Opening, Angel Otero Work Displayed at Chicago Cultural Center

me & artist Angel Otero pg.jpg

While I did love the idea of bumping into celebs in Palm Springs at gallery openings, Chicago does provide plenty of glitz and fun also.  Recently I went to the Hollis Sigler opening (Jan 23- March 28) at the Chicago Cultural Center. It was packed with artists, students, art lovers, and people who enjoy free wine along with free admission. Having purchased a Hollis Sigler for my home early on in her career, it was so rewarding to see the attention she continues to garner even after her death with her beautiful images.

Puerto RIcan born Angel Otero, a recent MFA grad of the Art Institute is one of the hot new darlings and rising star that everyone is buzzing about in the Chicago art world and whose work was on display (Jan 23-March 28) on the 4th floor gallery. It will be fun to watch his progress!

Spring Trends 2010: Ready-to-Wear and Ready For YOU!

fashion-week-spring-2010-trend-roundup_091909.jpg

Spring Ready-to-Wear runway shows have hit the marks for 2010 and I have to say, I'm more excited than I've been in years.  Flirty, feminine looks are beginning to show up again and luxury is on it's way back:  bye, bye, Recession Blues!

Lagerfeld for Fendi:  always F(!)antastic.  His Fendi line took the gold for me this season with looks that showcase the easy, feminine drape of many Spring lines.  The ecru silk tunic with asymmetrical hem and half sleeve continues a great trend that's oh-so-easy to wear: over-sized.  In the gallery, you'll notice pales pink, teeny tiny silk shorts with a high hem and also a great drape.  Lagerfeld also masters the art of juxtaposition; the tailored white blouse with an expertly draped half sleeve and a deep keyhole detail from the prim neckline to the bust is also completely sheer.  Hot!  Paired with a paper bag waist stiff cotton skirt in chocolate brown, we get an interesting mix of tailoring with an unstructured flirty skirt.  He also shows a beautiful fringe-y, furry, feather-y jacket with a halter neck and a tiered asymmetrical hem dress in pale pink satin with a taupe organza crossed overlay around the neckline and bust.  I love it when he steps away from his traditional love of black and white to dabble in the subtlety of warm creams, taupes, and pinks.

But Karl's not the only one showing earth tones for Spring 2010.  This season you'll find low-contrast, high voltage looks from Bottega Veneta, Burberry, and D&G.  Throw on your sass-filled jacket; and let's go shopping, dear!  As evidenced by my top four jackets in the gallery below, menswear inspired pieces are still reigning supreme.  Consider a feminized, ever-so-chic Gucci motorcycle jacket, or pick an updated boyfriend blazer from either Alberta Ferretti's Philosophy or Louis Vuitton.  A rougher option is the military style double breasted offering from Comme de Garcons.

One last thing I feel compelled to cover is the resurgence of overalls. Overalls!?  I almost can't believe my eyes.  I'm reserving judgment (for now).  I love a jumper, with pants, jodhpurs, shorts--but overalls?  While a few tickled my fancy, some where down-right-wrong.  As long as we go the right direction (as one of the designs from Gaultier below seems to be doing) I may just love the look.  But, if all we have is a denim bib, I think I'll take a pass.

-Barbara

**I hope you enjoy the pictures I culled from some of my favorite designers' shows and I hope I can help and inspire you to help others on our joint quest for warmer days and hotter nights enjoyed in some of these gorgeous garments.  Stay tuned for IN or OUT? coming tomorrow and every Wednesday!**

Accessory Friday: The Canine

460-mini-dogs_792708c.jpg

Blame it on Paris Hilton but tea cup dogs (the ones that fit into your Chanel or Gap bag) and larger are all the rage as an added accessory.  Visiting Palm Springs this past week I couldn't help but notice that I couldn't walk less than a few feet before I saw dogs, dogs, and more dogs! From the flea market to the golf carts, people love their dogs. No, I don't think they will ever replace sunglasses or bracelets, but they sure are loveable...

Thursday Street Style: Jogging Suits & Jeans in Palm Springs

11933937.jpg

Last week I took a mini holiday to Palm Springs to escape Chicago's cold weather. I love the snow-capped mountains and the beautiful orange and grapefruit trees. Yes, I agree that there are lots of retired older people that golf or play tennis five days a week, wearing jogging suits and clothes that I would pass on to the local Salvation Army. But, I did find some great looking people at unexpected places like the flea market, restaurants, art galleries, and vintage hotels like the Viceroy that was featured in Vogue magazine with Kate Hudson. Lots of former Chicagoans seeking the sun also. Like most places in the country there is the cool crowd and the ones that find life just plain boring...

Ed Hardy: IN or OUT?

edhardy.jpg

Walking through the flea markets in Palm Springs last week I was shocked to see the number of Ed Hardy inspired t-shirts, hoodies, and jeans. Sorry to tell you, but when these trends start popping up in these places, I know it is time to move on to another trend.  Ed Hardy, for those that may be living under a rock, are those shirts that were launched by Christian Audigier with lots of hearts, skulls and plenty of glitz to reflect a biker/rocker look. Many of the celebs embraced this look like Paris Hilton and Brett Michaels to create the buzz. Keep in mind that one of the looks for spring is Military inspired with safari jackets. Fashion moves quickly. Just blink and something new will be the 'In" look for the next moment. What do you think?....

Spring 2010 Trends:

...with Christina Fan...

Love from the Serengeti:

Designers are waging war on this gloomy winter by prepping troops for springtime battle with vibrant tribal prints reminiscent of a desert sunset or trek in the jungle. Well armed with wooden bangles and ethnic inspired accessories galore, today's fashionista is stampeding into the sunlight in vivacious gear that celebrates life in all its glory.  Yet, I find that Spring 2010 ushers in a softer version of the Amazonian warrior by combining geometric patterns with delicate fabrics and feminine silhouettes. One may find that bedecking her entire body with a bold kaleidoscopic pattern too daring.  To this individual I say - just throw on a tribally influenced scarf and tread through the urban jungle with confidence in your fashion prowess!

Girl Meets Boy:

Or is it Boy meets Girl?  Lately, fashion is blurring the line between masculinity and femininity with styles such as dropped crotch pants, boyfriend blazers, and even men in skirts.  YSL was one of the first in the industry to shock us with the tuxedo for women (gasp!) with a campaign that focused on an androgynous model.

Nowadays, it's a common occurrence for women to wear their boyfriend's jeans or shirts.  In many cases, these styles are often viewed as the most fashion forward.  With designers such as Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana, trending towards the epicene, smaller brands will soon follow suit by the masses.  While to some of you this trend may seem risky or perhaps even unattractive--I believe it is all about embracing comfort and ease.  Warning! Don't just grab one of Dad's old suits.  Pair a menswear inspired dress shirt with a pair of leggings and hot heels and call it a day. Easy!

Man-Up Monday: Know your 'Dos

Untitled-5.jpg

Happy Monday to all my Chicago men!  Today on Man-Up Monday, we wanted to quickly discuss a topic very important to all of your wives and lady-friends:  hair cuts for spring!  Yes--we know, we know:  "Well, what's in it for me?", you ask.  Though these new 'dos apply strictly to the ladies, we thought it would be nice if you had a little "style education" in the hair cut arena.  These tips come right from Michael Jacobson, stylist and co-owner of the very popular Michael & Michael Salon (take your babe there for the best cut in Chicago!)  After all, having a well-rounded knowledge of what your woman likes (hair and clothing) can only help you in the long run!  (Plus, there's some pretty hot photos in the gallery that you wont get yelled at for looking through.  (You're welcome.))  So, polish up on your "bobs and bangs" and you just might be "the lucky one" tonight!

-Barbara

p.s. Check back next Monday for another Man-Up Monday post and don't miss our Guest Blogger, Christina Fan, as she shares with us her style knowledge tomorrow!

Sexy Hair for Spring:

...brought to you by my friends at Michael & Michael Salon...

This spring, shorter textured cuts are in - still balanced, blended and feminine, but with a little rock star thrown in.   Hair that is too long, flat, and straight is definitely out.  Think choppier layers, still with some length, not too clean, but not too messy either. This slightly shaggier look, when done right, still reads as completely feminine and playful.  (Kristen Stewart)

Even classic shorter cuts like the bob and pixie can still be in and edgy - with a couple of twists.

Consider updating your bob by adding a razored or more textured finish.   For a shorter bob, the length should land at the jaw line (Katie Holmes). A longer bob should skim the shoulder (Heidi Kluhm).  To create some drama, add bangs to either length bob - this will pop the eyes and cheekbones and create a really sexy, flirty look (Rhianna).

To transform the short pixie, add a longer asymmetrical bang.  This softer, but still dramatic, look will also bring out the eyes and cheek bones (Keira Knightley).

Determining which shorter, edgier shape is right for you, ultimately depends on your face shape, neck length and overall head shape.  And make sure your stylist knows the difference between drama (Victoria Beckham) and disaster (Kate Gosselin:  pre-extensions)!

Spring 2010 Trends:

To Harem or Not to Harem?

Women of Chicago, what are your thoughts on the harem pant trend? While I admit these roomy pantaloons are a very comfortable and stylish alternative to the constant legging or skinny jean, not every woman can catch Aladdin's affection like Princess Jasmine. If you've been skeptical of this trend, now is your chance to test the waters. Thank the Spring winds for they have blessed us with an update to the much feared harem!

This season's runways overflowed with roomy trousers that said an enthusiastic goodbye to the dumpy pants of yore and a hearty hello to roomy trousers.  Rather than screaming "Wayward Traveler," Spring 2010's dropped-crotch drawers joyously shout, "Crisp, Class and Ease!" With heavy hitting majors such as Givenchy, Dries Van Noten, and Lanvin forging the way, this season's must have is available in a variety of patterns and textures for versatile wearability. Designers have even considered the warmer months by offering shorter versions that cleverly resemble skirts.  So get your cartwheel ready ladies, for with these easy bottoms, wardrobe malfunctions are now a thing of the past!

Accessory Friday: Gloves, Gloves, Gloves!

Accessories Are a Must: Gloves

 BG-loves-gloves!.jpg

Wearing gloves has always been a fashion statement for me.  My mother never left the house without gloves, even if she was just going to lunch with the ladies.  (Of course, she also wore pantyhose in 90° weather because that was her definition of a lady.)  Today gloves are taking on a new twist and lucky for me, I have a large shoebox dedicated to my glove collection.  From Michael Jackson's "one glove" to Michelle Obama wearing "the green gloves" (from Banana Republic) at the inauguration--gloves are definitely "in" again for all the Chicago fashionistas. I am a big fan of wearing fingerless gloves layered over fingered gloves for a look that can be unique. Whatever you do, have fun with this accessory, as there are so many choices this season.

Winter Shorts: IN or OUT?

Who Wears Short Shorts?
short shorts 2(10).jpg

Of course shorts look amazing on sun-tanned legs in the summer but does this trend work for winter?  Many Chicago women have decided to charge forward and wear leggings under shorts or tights with the addition of boots to create a winter look that is a show stopper--OR--is it just absurd?  I prefer wearing my boot length jeans over my Hanro underwear to keep me warm when I walk my dog Gage in the frigid temperatures.  What do you think?

I'm excited to announce that the beautiful and talented Christina Fan will be our guest blogger for this month!  She will be addressing some of the hottest trends for Spring 2010 that will soon hit our favorite Chicago stores like H&M, Zara and Forever 21.  Christina is a Chicago-based womenswear designer.  Her line, C/FAN, was recently featured in the 2009 Gen Art "Fresh Faces in Fashion" Show and will be carried at Le Dress,
Jake, Bonnie & Clyde's, and Tula.  I am so pleased to have Christina share with us some of her expert advice on one of my favorite topics...

Spring 2010 Trends:
...with Christina Fan...

Move over skimpy dresses and make way for the new hit trend of Spring 2010: Separates.  Follow this season's ABC's with designers such as Alexander Wang, Balmain and Chloe, all of whom embrace versatility and texture with separate pieces that easily convert from work to play.

With a nod to the consumer's need to budget, designers are opting for pieces that can be worn time and time again while slipping seamlessly into existing wardrobes.  Don't be fooled though, today's separates are far from any old sweater set.  Chicago's boutiques will stock up on key pieces such as sexy jackets, draped tops, and body hugging bottoms in a variety of weights and textures.

The best thing about separates?  You can make a bold statement by combining lace, leather and sequins or just add a bit of *pop* to your outfit with a sheer top.  Ladies, charge past 2009 with force and dressing accordingly; find your favorite separates in a flattering neutral and layer to your heart's content!

Man-Up Monday: Men In Skirts?

28_skirtedmen_lg.jpg
Recent designs.  From left, John Galliano, Comme des Garcons, and Etro. Photo: imaxtree

Two hundred years ago, if you were to mention the word "pants" to someone, they would think you were crazy (and ask what you were talking about.)  Most societies wore skirted garments (yes, even men!) until these skirts were "split" to make riding horses a bit easier.  The political working class of the 1800's transformed the workman's garments into a symbol of power, and it stayed that way.  Fast-forward a few years to 2010 and the thought of a man in a skirt may inspire laughter--though it may not be as crazy as you think!  I have spotted men in skirts and kilts on the streets lately and I also know that the handsome Marc Jacobs is a lover of the look.  This trend really exploded on the scene in Fall 2009, but has not gained mass popularity in America (though Europeans have begun to wear them.)  Maybe in 5 or 10 years men NOT wearing skirts will be a silly thought!  Personally, I believe you should wear what makes you feel good, but I must ask you men out there:  Would you wear a skirt or a kilt?  Do you think this trend will catch on in America?

Leave your thoughts in a comment and let me know what you think (ladies too!)

Wide Leg Jeans: IN or OUT?

theory Max C pants $253.jpg

Blame it on the revival of the 80's trends with biker chic, sequins and glitz--but are we buying into the bell bottoms or wide leg jeans that stores are trying to push? Maybe it worked for Sonny and Cher but most Chicago women are sticking with their skinny jeans. Even Alessandra Ambrosio (Victoria's Secret Model) wore skinny jeans when I interviewed her recently on my blog.  I did meet several women that admitted they did own the boot cut but nixed it in favor of their skinny jeans (which fit into their over-the-knee boots to keep them warm this winter.) While Seven jeans are still popular some of the newer names in the designer world are James Jeans and J Brand with their very slim leg also known as "denim leggings." Of course what is most important at any price range is the fit!

Men Gone "Mad"

The New York Times recently highlighted men's fashion in an article titled, "Dress Codes:  Dressing for Success, Again" by David Colman.  The story discusses how young men these days are looking to fashions of the past and are dressing up more than ever.  The photo spread is so much fun, as I am a big fan of the "Mad Men" look that has recently gained so much popularity in the fashion world.  The spread was shot by talented photographer Douglas Friedman, with typography by Jennifer Green and features fashions by some of our favorite designers and retailers.  I have seen this trend take hold in Chicago as more young men begin to dress up in bowties, waist coats and even top hats!  Have a look at the photo gallery and pass on the tips to the man in your life.  After all, a little argyle never hurt anyone...

Leggings: IN or OUT?

leggings_shopping_1.jpg

I have been a big fan of leggings for over two years, but I am over it already!

Every woman, from career professionals to three-year-olds, are wearing them.  Like Madonna and Audrey Hepburn, I want to set trends that work for me, not just follow the pack. Some women in Chicago (and in advertisements) are coming up with some novel alternatives to leggings. And yes, I still prefer to go barelegged or wear fishnets--unless it is below zero in Chicago!

How do you feel about this trend?
