Street Fashion: Headbands - Chicago Style

Leighton Meester

Whether you want to look chic or just hide a bad hair day, headbands are the perfect solution for these hot days.Of course, some of us may remember when Hillary Clinton was titled just too preppy when she wore headbands as a first lady. Who knew they would be in fashion once again? The headbands that are being seen on celebrities and Chicagoans alike these days are not the run of the mill, prep-school head bands, although some of those are lovely too. These days there is leather, gem stones and even feathered headbands that are sure to make even a bad hair day look good. Take a look at a few of the local Chicago styles a long with celebrities!

Headbands-New York Style

As young girls we grow up wearing headbands, why should we stop? Headbands are not just for elementry school girls anymore, but for "grown ups" too. A headband can potentially put the exclamation point on your outfit, creating a playful and girlish air.  For a city that loves to be extravagant, many New York women are spiffing up their outfits with a complementary headband.

Headbands are in style! Anywhere from the classic headband like Leighton Meester in Gossip Girl to the hippy headband Micsha Barton wears. Classic headbands are plain, patterned or colorful and can be accented with a jewel or bow. The hippy headbands are those worn around the middle of the forehead. However, the most popular headband I've seen in NYC is the sparkly braided band like Natiale Portman wears. Whatever you headband style is, you are not too old to wear it!

Street Fashion: Is 2 always Better than 1?

beyonce_swimsuit_picture-1253557581.jpg
In the case of swimwear celebrities have proven that a 2 piece swimsuit does not always have to be better than 1.  We have seen celebrities from Beyonce to the Kardashians make a 1 piece just as classy and sexy at the same time.  We can all benefit from a 1 piece as it can cover up  and hide our flaws.
This summer season has had a slow start, but memorial day has definitely proven that summer is amongst us.  I expect metallics, prints, bright colors, cut outs, and bandeau's to be the most popular trend.  One of my most popular trends is mix matching the 2 pieces.  So don't be afraid this summer, show your style through matching a print top with a metallic top.

Bill Cunningham New York: Movie Premiere in Chicago

 bill_cunningham.jpg

I know all you fashionistas are aware of the work of Bill Cunningham in Sunday's Style Section, "On The Street" and "Evening Hours" in the New York Times. It was indeed exciting to get a behind-the-scenes look at his amazing work at the preview party thrown at the W Hotel.  Of course I cover the Chicago Streets on my blog, but he did it first- before the others also like Tommy Ton and the Sartorialist.  He does it daily (rain or snow) on his bike, which he mentions has been stolen 29 times, and he's over 80 years old! Don't you just love it?!

I got a chance to talk to film makers Richard Press, Director & Cinematographer, and Phillip Gefter, Producer. When asked what was the most difficult part of making the documentary, they said "convincing Bill to agree to do it."  It took 8 years of convincing and 2 years to do the movie.  He is an original.  He see's fashion as the armor to survive, and the armor of everyday life.  He says it (fashion) educates the eye.

Don't miss the movie which is playing for only one week at the Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport Ave). I loved it!!

Trends: Socks and Sandals?

SOCKSlady.jpg

It's always been a HUGE taboo to wear socks with sandals. However at the Fall 2011 preview at Fashion week, Prada showed tons of models wearing tall, stiff socks with closed and open sandals - both heels and flats.    Gone are the days when your grandmother's frumpy slippers and socks look made you cringe; you just may find yourself weeding through her drawers to find a wool pair to borrow!

Rihanna has been seen sporting this cozy-toed look on the red carpet.  Socks can even be sexy! Try pairing pumps with a short, ankle height lace pattern sock.   For a warmer look, grab a pair of over-the-knee knitted socks and scrunch them down over a pair of winter wedge ankle boots.    Socks are a cheap way to accessorize an otherwise forgotten option - instead of buying a new pair of shoes, mix it up and buy a few new pairs of funky socks instead!

Fashion Week and Clutches: Smaller Bags are Back

GYI0063384419_0.jpg

BCBG. New York Fashion Week handbag trends from the runway for fall 2011Credit: Getty Images

If you're wiped out from carrying around heavy over-sized handbags the past few seasons, we've got some good news! This Fashion Week in New York, designers sent a surplus of Clutches down the runway.  So, if you're in the market for a new bag, consider lightening the load and go for a stylish clutch bag instead.

There's still a way to carry all your favorite personal items and fit them in a clutch - not all clutches are miniature! Although  Kim Kardashian usually sports over-the-top handbags, she's been seen with a cute Balenciaga Giant Clutch. The "Oversized Clutch" is a fantastic way to compromise style without losing the storage for your everyday essentials.

Check out the Book of the Month & Daily News Clutches from Kate Spade.  These clutches are designed to look like books of Classic Literature right off the shelves.  Just because your bag is smaller, it doesn't mean your style has to be!   Natalie Portman carried the "Lolita" clutch at the premier of Black Swan last Fall.

Spring Fashion: A Pop of Color

g-tdy-110209-michelle-930a.jpg

With a dose of warmer weather in Chicago, women are beginning to think spring by adding a sprinkle of color to their wardrobe. Whether it's a colorful bag, scarf, shoes, or even hair highlights, we've been seeing bursts of color popping up everywhere. Even Michelle Obama recently was seen on the Today Show wearing a black and white polka dotted dress with some yellow heels and a pink/orange belt, both excellent pops of color. So is all of this wishful thinking or is spring just around the corner?

SpiritHoods: Animal Hats

AnimalHats.jpg

Living in Chicago, I know how cold the weather can get. Everyone who is smart, will leave their house with a hat on. However, instead of the usual trapper hats, I've been seeing a lot of people wearing animal hats. Mostly hats with cat ears. The more popular ones are called SpiritHoods. They seem to be a new trend amoung celebrities as well as people living downtown. Khloe Kardashian, Pink, and Vanessa Hudgens have all been seen wearing SpiritHoods. These furry animal hats come with paws (hand warmers) that extend from the hat. SpiritHoods rage from $139-$119. What do you think? Will you be seen sporting an animal inspired hat, or are you more traditional?

See SpiritHoods.com if you're interested in purchasing one of these fuzzy hats.

Barrettes and Bobby Pins : Hair Styles

imagesCANVYWF4.jpg
Barrettes and bobby pins were once considered the accessory of little old ladies and little kids. However, they are now seen on teens, celebrities and the spring fashion runways! Everyone is showing up in either barrettes or bobby pins and looking very chic. According to the Wall Street Jounal article, "Barrettes: Dowdy No More," Spring 2011 trends include:

  • Hand crafted bobby pins or barrettes
  • Barrettes that pin back loose wind-swept side parts
  • Crystallized/artistic looking barrettes at the base of a pony tail

People can look innocent, sophisticated, and artistic while still being chic at the same time. Rihanna likes to wear very big, crystallized barrettes on the side of her hair. Are barrettes too innocent looking for you, or are you willing to try to bling up your hair?

Trapper Hat : In or Out?

imagesCAN6IZW2.jpg
Recently, the New York Times gave a list of top ten trends from 2010 that they wanted to go away. One of the trends on their list was the Trapper Hat. Living in Chicago, I see them everywhere. I personally love them and will not go outside without mine. Wheather it's faux fur or real fur, everyone claims this accessory keeps them very warm and cozy in our near freezing temperatures. Celebrities as well as people around school and downtown Chicago have been spotted wearing them. Everyone loves them! So what do you think? Are they as IN as they were two years ago, or are they out?

Street Fashion : What are YOU wearing?

street.jpg

It's hard to dress well while keeping warm in this insane Chicago weather, but it seems to always get done. As I was walking around the streets of downtown Chicago, Wicker park, and my school (The Illinois Institute of Art), I realized that it's hard to find someone who doesn't have something trendy on. With stores like Forever 21 and H&M, we are in a world of fast fashion. It is easy for anyone to become trendy in an instant because the trends keep pouring in at cheap prices.

As I was people watching, I noticed the majority of Chicagoans had long black winter coats or leather jackets. Uggs, Hunter rain boots, or military styled shoes are by far the most popular shoes this winter as well as long, oversized scarves and interesting hats. Amoung all these trends, I did happen to find some unique pieces such as oversized hair bows and small scarves. A lot of people have style in Chicago, and a lot don't. After seeing so many oversized scarves, the little ones tied tightly around the neck seem the newest. As Barbara says, "it is a breath of fresh air to see something new after constantly seeing the same trends over and over again."

Even celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and the Olsen twins are sporting similar looks to people here in Chicago. It seems as though celebrities and consumers alike are all revolving around the same fashion trends. It's interesting that no matter what status you are, trends are trends and that's that. Are you out in the winter with your Uggs or Hunter boots?

Street Fashion: Hats

Collage of Celebs in Hats - Front.jpg

Winter has barely began to freeze the waters of Lake Michigan and dress the trees with snow. We have become busy layering ourselves and finding the perfect hat to keep us warm. From Trapper hats that remind me of snoopy to elegant faux fur and real fur hats are surviving the solution. You can even keep warm with hats from walgreens for $2.99! It seems that celebrities are also embracing the extra layer, from Rihanna with her large fur bomber hat to Katy Perry with her mustard yellow one. The possibilities are endless but always so chic and practical. Which winter hat is your favorite?

Spring 2011 : Marc Jacobs

hotpant.jpg

Anything Marc Jacobs touches seems to turn to gold. Not only does he have his own lines: Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, he is also the creative director for Louis Vuitton. He is the go-to guy for stylish, sophisticated pieces with an edgy twist. Anyone who's anybody is sporting something from Marc Jacobs, especially this spring. Whether it's his more affordable line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, or his pricey line, Marc Jacobs, celebrities as well as highschool and college kids can't get enough of the brand.

For spring 2011, it's all about going back to the 1970's with frizzy hair, wide-legged pants, gold glittering platform shoes and oversized flower corsages as seen on Style.com. For spring, it's all about color, prints, halter dresses, seductive cuts/slits and yes, HOT PANTS. I will definitely be around sporting some tight short shorts this spring/summer and can't wait to see what others are going to try to pull off. Say goodbye to cleavage and hello to legs and butt! Will you be sporting the look of the 70's this spring?

Street Fashion: Holiday Fashion and Accessories

MaryKateOlsen&CarrieUnderwood.jpg

The holiday season is upon us and with it comes a whole new rule book for winter fashion. Out goes the drab dull colors of the cold and in comes the vibrant reds, sparkles and oversized bows. Not only does Michigan Ave. get lit up, it seems that the style does as well. Celebrities dawn blindingly sequined dresses and red hot lipstick. Sarah Jessica Parker likes to make a statement with oversized costume jewlery around the holidays. I personally love embellished belts and sparkly bracelets. What is your favorite accessory for the holidays?

Street Fashion: Cowl Neck Sweaters

KimKardashianCowlCape.jpg

Last season both men and women were wearing cowl neck rings on their coats, dresses and even scarves. Today cowl neck sweaters and dresses are seen everywhere from H & M to Barneys. The neckline is so flattering and adaptable. By adding a new infinity scarf or circle scarf you can make any item look as though it has a cowl neckline. Depending on how much skin you're trying to show, a scarf or sweater dress can also keep you cozy against the harsh windy winter elements. Supermodel Elle MacPherson and starlet Kim Kardashian both use these sweaters to stay warm! No matter what type of outfit you're wearing or what type of event you're going to this neckline is always chic.

Leopard Prints: Why we love them.

olivia-palermo-leopard shoes.jpg

Olivia Palermo in her leopard print shoes

I know, I know... leopard prints again?

Even though we all constantly hear about leopard prints, they seem to never go out of style. This fall/winter, more than ever, leopard prints are back again and are being spotted in a variety of differnet forms. In the past, leopard prints have usually been seen on outerwear as well as tops for women. However, this past season, not only have leopard prints been spotted on clothing, they have also been seen on other forms of merchandise: umbrellas, socks for rainboots, tights, dog coats, pillows, scarves, etc.

For fall/winter 2010-2011, the leopard print can be considered as being a basic element especially when it comes to coats and dresses. Everything stands in personal taste and favorite colors. If properly worn and paired, leopard print can add style and a unique touch to any look without being overplayed or "cheap looking." Leopard prints are a fun and lovely way to dress up any casual outfit and add some pizazz to it.

Street Fashion: Winter Puffer Coats

Main.jpg

It is that time of the year in Chicago when we work very hard to continue to look chic while staying toasty warm. Most of us cave in and purchase a puffer coat, like myself, in a variety of lengths, for those below zero temperatures. Some are adding accessories like a fur neck wrap, a belt or just a bright scarf and warm boots to punch up the look.  It seems that celebrities are taking the same cues for the bitter weather, with floor, knee or waist length down coats. There are some in bright colors, shiny nylon or classic muted winter tones. I like them all, as long as they protect me from the bitter Chicago wind. How do you like to wear your puffer coat?

Street Fashion: Winter Shorts

winter-shorts.jpg

Pulling off shorts in the winter can be a bit of a challenge, especially with the below freezing temperatures of Chicago, but it seems that celebrities and Chicago women a like are bearing the weather and not afraid to show a little leg. Opaque tights and very short jean shorts seem to be the favorite, mixed with a boyfriend blazer or other menswear pieces and a white shirt. Leather cuffed shorts are also popping up everywhere. Although I am always a fan of dressing for the weather, paired with some warm tights and the right outerwear, I think that shorts in the winter can be a lovely combination. What do you think, do you wear shorts in the snowy season?

Street Fashion: Coats to Keep Cozy

Winter Coats.jpg

Staying warm in the ever changing Chicago weather is indeed a challenge, my favorite way to stay warm? I love wearing a bulky sweater coat with a great print scarf around my neck, adding a belt helps keep it snug and cozy, as well as, gives me a waistline. Yes, I am always cold so I adore wearing layers. Of course, we can't forget to add shades as our final accessory to complete the look. I am just worried for the first real snow, then I will have to start wearing a real coat! These chicago ladies and celebrities have the coat trends down. The strong shouldered, belted or military. It seems as though there are a bunch of lovely trends for the winter to help stay cozy. What is your favorite way to stay cozy throughout the holiday season? Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Street Fashion: Faux Fur

1Main.jpg

It seems like a jungle out there this season, with all the animal prints and fur i've been seeing. No need for PETA to get involved, most of these looks are faux. Celebrities seem to have cozied up to this lovely fall and winter trend. The Kardashian sisters, have really embraced faux fur, with Khloe's I'd Rather Go Naked PETA Campaign I would hope that they would. Even Lady Gaga has shown off her fur, as extravagant as it may be. Chicago women are picking up on this trend and loving it.  The only problem now is picking which style aesthetic I like more, boho chic, 70's with a touch of glam or classic old hollywood. Tell me, which way do you like to wear your faux?

Street Fashion: Mini Skirts vs. Maxi Skirts

vanessa_hudgens_300x400.jpg

The age old question of mini skirt versus maxi skirt? It is certainly a fun way to expose great legs and interesting hose when wearing a mini this season. But, I must admit that longer lengths often present an attitude of mystery and elegance. Marc Jacobs seems to favor ankle length skirts this season, as shown in his autumn and winter collection for 2010/2011. I don't know what your opinion is but I prefer changing my look and length of skirt with my mood, much like Vanessa Hudgens. So tell me, what is your favorite skirt length for fall?

Street Fashion: Wild Animal Prints

Street Fashion: Outerwear for Fall

Blake Lively.jpg

As the weather in the windy city changes from moderate to cool and crisp, so do the clothing choices. Out of necessity women are wearing coats, scarves and boots. The variation of coats I have been seeing on the streets are both numerous and so chic. Heavy cotton blazers, leather jackets and military trenches are among the many styles of the season. Celebrities, such as Blake Lively, have mastered the art of fall fashion, and it seems Chicago women have taken note.  It is easy to get lost under the layers of cold weather, but these ladies have figured out how to use outerwear in a fashionable and practical way. What is your favorite type of outerwear for the fall?

There are many different combinations that I have noticed being sported around the streets of downtown Chicago. With women pairing summer pieces with heavier fall staples to face the fluctuating temperatures of the day. Check out the Chicago street scene along with the celebs in LA.

Banning the Burqa: Oui ou Non?

Burqa feature.png
"The burqa is not welcome in France." - Nicolas Sarkozy.
It has been banned, and the proposed law will take effect in 6 months if not rejected by France's Constitutional Council. Muslim women will not be allowed to cover their faces in public, nor can anyone force a veil upon an unwilling woman or minor or there will be penalties. Do you think this is a ban on freedom of religion?
In the meantime, the spring runway shows are abuzz, and whether women are on the runway or not they still want to show themselves off. A female face, and they way people think, and feel about fashion, and how they choose to express it is admired in France. Does this  proposed law support women from the chains of the past? - or -  Is France banning the burqa  because it has become something frightening to us because of the pain of 9/11 and the war?

Finally the fall weather feels as though it is here to stay and with it comes some staples in the fall wardrobe, among these being boots. As the Ugg obsession of a few years ago fades, new sleek leather and suede boots are being seen all over the streets of chicago and on celebrities alike! The new styles are great over jeans or with leggings, tights and skirts. Over-the-knee or thigh-high boots were introduced last fall and the trend has carried over for this fall and winter as well. The unpredictable changing weather here in the windy city has been making it harder and harder too look put together throughout this fall. My mother would always tell me to be prepared for everything and it seems the only way to do that with my wardrobe is by dressing with easily removable layers and complementary accessories. Scarves are a lovely piece that can either add a pop of color or pull the outfit together as a coordinating accessory. It seems that both Chicago women and celebrities alike agree when getting dressed for the varying fall weather. As the fall's leopard print trend is slowly making a way onto the streets of Chicago its predecessors, summer's tribal and animal prints, are still going strong. Street Fashion: All that Glitters

sarah_jessica.jpg

In the past, anything sparkly was saved for a special occasion or the holiday season. It seems there is yet another rule broken in the fashion world. Chicagoans continue to have a love affair, on hot summer days, with anything that catches the sunlight.  Glitzy embellishments have not only flooded the streets of Chicago but red carpets too. It seems what the Midwest loves on their tops celebrities love as their outfits. Sequin dresses and tops are redefining "bling" as we know it. Hillary Duff, Hayden Panettiere and SJP have all replaced the millions of dollars in jewelry with millions of sequins on their tiny dresses. Whether it's glitzy tees or sequin soaked minis this trend definitely catches an eye.

Street Fashion: Trapeze Tops

Easy, breezy, beautiful, trapeze tops? Maybe Maybelline should be rethinking its slogan for another type of market. Recently it seems there have been more and more swinging tank tops on the streets of Chicago. This easy summer shirt is a perfect match with skinny jeans for a laid back, west-coast outfit. I am pretty sure Yves Saint Laurent didn't have the girls from The Hills in mind when designing the non-constricting trapeze silhouette dress in the 1920's. No matter its foreign origin California and Chicago girls alike have embraced this lovely piece. Burned-out, lace-detailed, or everyday cotton, these trapeze tops have everyone wondering what is underneath.

Street Fashion: Wedge Sandals

Chicago is full of landmines for my shoes. Uneven pavement, ventilation grates and the occasional pothole tears apart any sort of heel that I tend to wear. Luckily, it seems there is a trendy alternative popping up all over the street to preserve the heels of my heels! The wedge sandal is an easy yet chic summer alternative that has been gracing the feet of celebrities and locals a like. Paired with the right outfit this shoe can be dressed up or down and comes in a variety of styles. The extremely classic summer espadrille has been around summer after summer, Jimmy Choo designing a take on them for this summer season. Christian Louboutin did an extremely high summer wedge with chain detail, as seen on Audrina Patridge. Chicago locals are taking their own spin on the wedge. Form, functionality and, of course, style all play roles in choosing summer footwear. Luckily, these shoes won't send you home early, because of sore feet. It seems that in this case the old saying is untrue beauty does not have to be pain.

What's fun is to see this trend matched up with everything from serious business clothing to jeans. I must admit I love my gold sandals that I found at Marshall's three years ago. They go with everything in my wardrobe!

Street Fashion: Floral - A Garden In Full Bloom

IMG_5096.jpg

What better way to channel in Spring than with floral EVERYTHING.  Floral prints and accessories have been all over the runways and the streets of every fashionable city.  Chanel, Stella McCartney, Blugirl, and Balenciaga adorn the runways with Spring colors and patterns.  A big trend I have noticed are floral handbags and rings, I can't go anywhere without spotting one.

Thursday Street Style: Jogging Suits & Jeans in Palm Springs

11933937.jpg

Last week I took a mini holiday to Palm Springs to escape Chicago's cold weather. I love the snow-capped mountains and the beautiful orange and grapefruit trees. Yes, I agree that there are lots of retired older people that golf or play tennis five days a week, wearing jogging suits and clothes that I would pass on to the local Salvation Army. But, I did find some great looking people at unexpected places like the flea market, restaurants, art galleries, and vintage hotels like the Viceroy that was featured in Vogue magazine with Kate Hudson. Lots of former Chicagoans seeking the sun also. Like most places in the country there is the cool crowd and the ones that find life just plain boring...

Street Style: Color Wardrobe Remedy

DSC_2289.JPG

Take a temporary departure from the color black in your wardrobe to indulge in a dose of bright colors. With the gloomy and cold days of winter among us, color is just what the fashion doctor would order to heighten your spirits. Fashionistas alike are spiking their winter wardrobe with a colorful scarf, sweaters and even colorful sneakers to make them smile. Take a look at these colorful fashions our correspondent found while in New York City last week.

Accessory Friday: Gloves, Gloves, Gloves!

Accessories Are a Must: Gloves

 BG-loves-gloves!.jpg

Wearing gloves has always been a fashion statement for me.  My mother never left the house without gloves, even if she was just going to lunch with the ladies.  (Of course, she also wore pantyhose in 90° weather because that was her definition of a lady.)  Today gloves are taking on a new twist and lucky for me, I have a large shoebox dedicated to my glove collection.  From Michael Jackson's "one glove" to Michelle Obama wearing "the green gloves" (from Banana Republic) at the inauguration--gloves are definitely "in" again for all the Chicago fashionistas. I am a big fan of wearing fingerless gloves layered over fingered gloves for a look that can be unique. Whatever you do, have fun with this accessory, as there are so many choices this season.

NYE 2009: Official Playboy New Year's Eve Celebration

FEARMANPHOTO_0660.jpg

We were excited at the opportunity to have an InFashion team member cover the fabulous Playboy Party--from right inside the Hilton Chicago!  Below are some of the highlights--sent right to me from the owner of Global Adrenaline, a Chicago based entertainment and marketing company that specializes in celebrity/VIP nightlife events.

"Over 4,750 party-goers rung in the New Year at the NYE 2010 Official Playboy New Year's Eve Celebration at Hilton Chicago. International hip-hop superstar Pitbull performed just after midnight in front of an A-list crowd including twelve Playboy Playmates and local athletes Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks, Loul Deng of the Chicago Bulls, and Chicago Bears players Mark Anderson, Jamar Williams, and Garrett Wolfe. What a great party to launch 2010!"

NYE 2009: A Party in Pilsen

samNYE.jpg

New Years Eve 2009 brought out such a variety of individuals all across the city.  Though the parties downtown were hot, there were other celebrations in Chicago that were just as stylish!  A bit south (and a bit west) of "the Loop" is the Lower West Side of Chicago.  Here you will find a community called Pilsen--a town rich in ethnic history, culture, and a thriving epicenter for the arts (the galleries that are spread on Halsted near 18th Street are beautiful and plentiful.)  Naturally, an area so full of art and creativity will bring out the most unique of individuals, each with their own personal style.  Enjoy these fabulous individuals and the looks they wore to a Chicago house party in Pilsen, Chicago...

Happy New Year from InFashion with Barbara Glass!

Winter Shorts: IN or OUT?

Who Wears Short Shorts?
short shorts 2(10).jpg

Of course shorts look amazing on sun-tanned legs in the summer but does this trend work for winter?  Many Chicago women have decided to charge forward and wear leggings under shorts or tights with the addition of boots to create a winter look that is a show stopper--OR--is it just absurd?  I prefer wearing my boot length jeans over my Hanro underwear to keep me warm when I walk my dog Gage in the frigid temperatures.  What do you think?

Man-Up Monday: Men In Skirts?

28_skirtedmen_lg.jpg
Recent designs.  From left, John Galliano, Comme des Garcons, and Etro. Photo: imaxtree

Two hundred years ago, if you were to mention the word "pants" to someone, they would think you were crazy (and ask what you were talking about.)  Most societies wore skirted garments (yes, even men!) until these skirts were "split" to make riding horses a bit easier.  The political working class of the 1800's transformed the workman's garments into a symbol of power, and it stayed that way.  Fast-forward a few years to 2010 and the thought of a man in a skirt may inspire laughter--though it may not be as crazy as you think!  I have spotted men in skirts and kilts on the streets lately and I also know that the handsome Marc Jacobs is a lover of the look.  This trend really exploded on the scene in Fall 2009, but has not gained mass popularity in America (though Europeans have begun to wear them.)  Maybe in 5 or 10 years men NOT wearing skirts will be a silly thought!  Personally, I believe you should wear what makes you feel good, but I must ask you men out there:  Would you wear a skirt or a kilt?  Do you think this trend will catch on in America?

Leave your thoughts in a comment and let me know what you think (ladies too!)

-Barbara

Wide Leg Jeans: IN or OUT?

theory Max C pants $253.jpg

Blame it on the revival of the 80's trends with biker chic, sequins and glitz--but are we buying into the bell bottoms or wide leg jeans that stores are trying to push? Maybe it worked for Sonny and Cher but most Chicago women are sticking with their skinny jeans. Even Alessandra Ambrosio (Victoria's Secret Model) wore skinny jeans when I interviewed her recently on my blog.  I did meet several women that admitted they did own the boot cut but nixed it in favor of their skinny jeans (which fit into their over-the-knee boots to keep them warm this winter.) While Seven jeans are still popular some of the newer names in the designer world are James Jeans and J Brand with their very slim leg also known as "denim leggings." Of course what is most important at any price range is the fit!

What do you think...Wide leg jeans:  IN or OUT?

Winter Coats: Other Options

me sherling pg.jpg

OK, so I was thinking, even though  I did post puffer coats last week, I didn't think it was fair to only highlight one option for winter coats - there are definitely other ways to stay warm AND remain stylish this winter.  If you are earning a salary in the six figure income bracket, have a sugar daddy or a grandmother that passed on her coat to you, it could be a fabulous mink...there is nothing warmer. My choice is a sherling that I love but a great cloth coat worn with layers can keep you warm & cozy also.

Puffer Coats: A Winter Must

me in pufferjpg.jpg

It is almost impossible to survive winter in Chicago without a nice, warm puffer coat. Once again, this is not one of my favorite trends but it does do the job of keeping one warm & cozy. Thankfully, everyone looks less like the Michelin Man and more stylish today with the new styles available from short jackets to very long coats. Of course the most popular color is still black. Even I caved in to participate in this trend as I am so-o-o cold in winter.

Check out the gallery for more pics!  (I included some pics of celebrities in their coats for a little more style inspiration)

Boots with Style

Uggs: In or Out?

Thumbnail image for uggs laced.jpg

Well most of you know that I am not a fan of Uggs as I would not include them in the category of chic accessories. But, with the recent cold weather in Chicago you can't walk 10 feet without seeing a pair of the furry boots.

So, being the reporter I am, I wanted to know what was the attraction? Every single women uttered the same comments...the most comfortable and warm boots I ever owned. I am not convinced yet, but wait until the snow keeps falling.  And if I do convert - I might have to opt for the slightly more chic version from Tory Burch! Check out the gallery for more pics and let us hear your thoughts - are Uggs In or Out?

'Cliche' at the Museum of Contemporary Art

IMG_0980.jpg

It was a cold, cold night in Chicago but it was hot, hot, hot inside the Museum Of Comtemporary Art's monthly First Fridays event named Cliche. Over 1700 people gathered to hear music from the local DJ's, nibble on Wolfgang Puck's appetizers and experience the  iMac G5 digital dating bar among other activities. Of course, being happily married, I was there just to see the fashions and take a long peek at the amazing art exhibit called "ITALICS."  (I promise to show you some of my favorite images from the show later)  And what was the signature look of the evening on most of the women? You guessed it....the color black which I told you worked best for the Thanksgiving Day holiday on my video. Let's face it, black is the perfect color for any ocassion. I did think the one dress that was a standout in the crowd was silver. And some of the guys in the crowd were equally creative.

Colorful Locks

IMG_0462.jpg

What better way to have a little fun with color, especially on those grey Chicago fall days, then by adding a dose of it to your hair!  Women of all ages are experimenting with fun colors.  This may be one trend that I don't participate in!

Well-dressed Men

Yes, I admit that, sometimes, I forget about all the well-dressed guys walking around on the streets of Chicago. At one point in time, a well-dressed man's signature was a suit & tie. Not true in the age of being an individual. I had so much fun capturing all the different styles that men are creating including the dandy look with bow ties and vests, double-breasted suits for guys that have added some extra calories and wild, wild hair. From cab drivers to anchor men to men on billboards, their styles are so diverse. I couldn't think of presenting guys with style without including one of our men of the military whom we all salute & give thanks. I guess men are finally stepping up to the plate to re-capture their roles as the peacocks of the jungle.

Trend of the Moment: Biker Chic

Thumbnail image for zip leather jkt.jpg

rocker zip jkt.jpg

biker jacket look jpg.jpg

The one item on everyone's list this season should, without a doubt, be a leather jacket.  Don't say no yet!  I promise you the jacket can look amazing with anything from regular old blue jeans to a beautiful gown.  Every cutting-edge designer is doing their interpretation of the look from the most extreme with nail-heads and fringe embellishments to a less hard-edge version with an asymmetrical zipper.  Chicago women, celebrities, and tons of designers have already embraced the trend (to see pictures, check out my "Trend of the Moment" section at the top).

Now, if only I had a Harley!

Hats: Topping if off in Style

men's hat.jpg

I have always had a love affair with hats and, it seems as if I'm not alone!  Chicago women everywhere are turn to fun and interesting hats to cover up their hair on those windy city days.  The right hat is an amazing thing - it can change your mood to feeling very French, with a beret perhaps, to feeling very powerful, with the addition of a man's fedora. And if nothing else, like I've always said, a good hat can cover up a bad hair-day anytime!

Pants: Oh So Many Options!

pant option jpg.jpg
As an Image Consultant & Fashion Editor I get so frustrated when women say that there is nothing new in fashion. Yes, fashion is a revolving cycle of trends but the list of available options is endless.  Take pants for instance - just in the past few days I've seen women all over Chicago wearing interesting variations on your everyday slacks.  What's important is to remember that everyday you can create a different mood - and dressing up should be fun so don't take it too seriously!

Boots: Inching Up in Height

00060m.jpg
Prada Fall 2009

So, autumn weather has officially hit Chicago and, not only is it evident in peoples moods (grumps!), but also in their clothes, especially in regards to what's on their feet.  This Fall on the runway, we saw lots of labels featuring boots of truly incredible heights - well above the knee, and almost to the chin, in some cases!  While perhaps women may be reluctant to stuff themselves into a pair of 3.5 foot boots, women on the streets of Chicago certainly have started to inch up those boots!
